November 7, 2002 at 9:23 am #74166Well I just bought my first Mike Johnson album a week ago when I was supposed to see J Mascis play in Oslo.As we all know the show was cancelled. So instead of using my money on too much beer I used some cash buying cds. I don´t do that very often nowadays so I got excausted when I saw all the cd´s I have missed buying.
Anyway, I ended up with half a dozen cd´s. One of them, was Mike Johnson´s `where am I ?´. I have never heard him before except for the low keyed backup vocals for J mascis when he played in Dinosaur.
What surprised was Mike´s incredible low dark voice. Kinda cool, I think. But the songs are´nt that appealing to me. I´ve listened to it several times and have found out that the album is not something I will listen to everyday. I like the first song, though. This week I heard a scandinavian band called The Sound-
A female singer with an attitude made me like the band. it´s very simple, raw music. Listen to their hit: `hit me hard´. I think it´s cool.November 7, 2002 at 10:49 am #74167Just in reply to Simmons, I’ve been after that Mike Johnson album for some time now, his second album "Year of Mondays" is without a doubt one of my favourite records of all time.
At the moment track 2 on the new Mark Lanegan is sending shivers down my spine (I can’t remember the song name or the album title – how lame).
But for a song that thrills me to the core, it’s gotta be "How’d you pin that one on me?" off’f Green Mind. Perfection.
Though "New Cobweb Summer" by Lambchop on the Is A Woman album is also, well, PERFECT.
