Probably one of the best songs of all time, in my opinion.
February 16, 2003 at 5:16 pm #74375Never heard of Roadrunner…what kind a music is it. Is there a link where I can listen to it. Always interested when freaksceners nominate songs as "best"!
February 17, 2003 at 2:14 pm #74376"Roadrunner" is a rock song. It was written by Jonathan Richman. The Modern Lovers was his band at the time. I’m afraid I don’t know of any links, but this song is guaranteed to be on any compilation of Richman’s and probably lots of other places. Maybe you can get a sample at Amazon or something. Everytime I listen to this song it is always as great as the time before. It’s a song that creates a positive reaction.

I fully agree with you, one of the first ‘punk’ singles I bought, it actually had two versions of the song: Roadrunner (once) b/w Roadrunner (twice)….
Quote:the Modern Lovers’ "Roadrunner", one the best songs ever, of course, but more importantly perhaps the first piece of rock and roll correctly influenced by the Velvet Underground. I say "correctly" influenced because, while elsewhere at the time artists (um, Bowie mainly) were grappling with degeneracy, Richman cut through that bull to what really mattered: the incredibly great riffs. "Roadrunner" is a rewrite of "Sister Ray" with a cheesy ? And The Mysterians organ line thrown in for good measure, but it’s also part of a handful of songs (Chuck Berry’s "Sweet Little Sixteen," the Velvets’ "Rock’n’Roll", the Ramones’ "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," Sleater-Kinney’s "Words And Guitar") that concern themselves with the relationship between music and listener. But whereas "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Rock’n’Roll" and "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" are in third person and "Words And Guitar" is about creating music as much as anything else, "Roadrunner" is about driving around Cambridge, Mass. listening to the radio. In other words, Jonathan is a fan just like us. "Roadrunner once, Roadrunner twice, I’m in love with rock ‘n’ roll and I’ll be out all night."February 25, 2003 at 3:42 pm #74382Where’d the cheese go??? (parts 1 and 2) – WEEN
