I recently had the unparalleled privilege of meeting my mom’s favorite singer/musician of all time, Eric Burdon of the Animals and War. He did an informal q&a in the basement of a local library, & is quite possibly one of the coolest people I’ve ever run into. My sister & I were basically raised on his music, so I was not only representing my mom (who is in Europe and couldn’t be there), but kinda there to meet "Uncle Eric" myself.
I’m not one to name drop, but I bring this up because I remember a bunch of freaksceners discussing the Animals a while back. And I thought you all might find this interesting– in addition to recalling incredible stories about his life in the 1960s music world, Eric also informed the crowd that the lyric is NOT "spill the wine, get that girl", but "spill the wine, take that pearl".
So I thought you all might like to know.
take care,

January 31, 2002 at 2:10 am #67787Wow, that’s really cool Rosa…
As far as pivotal figures go, my only claim to fame is that I got to meet the late, great Bill Monroe (father of bluegrass) when I was like 6 or 7..

Don’t know if I would have been able to form words had I come face to face with Eric Burdon…Very cool!!! I covered It’s my Life by The Animals when I was playing guitar, we played it really badly but had a hell of a fun time doing it.

February 2, 2002 at 8:07 pm #67789Cool to meet an icon like eric! About spill the wine, it reminds me of a nice story.
You Know Bob Dylan liked pot a lot in the 60ties. He listened to beatlessongs and specialy he loved the song "I want to hold your hand". You know why?
He realy thought that they were singing : "I get high, I get high!", instead of "I can’t hide".February 2, 2002 at 8:26 pm #67790Cool that you got to meet him,Rosa.I was watching some old Ed Sullivan footage not long ago of the Animals. When I Was Young is one of a my fav songs, especially Poison 13`s cover of it.
Do you know some people think House Of The Rising Sun was by The Doors?problably because of the organ and Eric`s vocals on it is kinda like Jim Morrison.Speaking of who wrote songs, who wrote House Of The Rising Sun?I think it`s a traditional song,I heard a few bluegrass versions of it,like Doc Watson,It was on Bob Dylan`s first album too.A local punk band did a thrashy version of it about 10 years ago, kinda cool, still think I like The Animals version the best though.February 2, 2002 at 9:50 pm #67791Yes it’s cool to meet people like that (I think we have a thread about meeting artists somewhere, gotta dig that up…)
"House of the rising sun" is a traditional, with a very long recording history, one of the first recordings being one of Alan Lomax’s famous field recordings in 1937. Read more about it (and Eric Burdon & the Animals) in this article !
February 3, 2002 at 8:13 am #67792Nice article Den Buck but are you sure about the reliability of this reporter, At the end of the article he is writing about the "german" Thoots Thielemans
BTW House of the rising song was one of the firtst licks I’ve learned on the guitar that even sounded like real. Am,C,D, F, Am,C, E7
February 4, 2002 at 12:33 pm #67793Yeah,"Thoots"!,it`s Toots!and he`s from Belgium,not Germany.He`s also a good guitar player too.
