so what does everyone think about "Pig Lib"? I’m not sure if I like it. I have to listen to it some more
March 28, 2003 at 9:42 am #92175growing on me. need plenty more listens before i go see him in a couple of weeks at royal festival hall.
March 28, 2003 at 10:55 am #92176i think its funny that he has no clue which pavement album sold the best. i haven’t been able to get into pig lib yet. i think it may be because i listened to crooked rain a ton the past month or so
March 28, 2003 at 12:03 pm #92177I also haven’t listened to it enough. A couple times so far. It didn’t grab me right off like Pavement did when I first heard them. But I’ve bought too many cds recently to give Pig Lib its deserved time. I think I will like it fine once I hear it more.
March 28, 2003 at 4:38 pm #92178Some great songs on it: "(Do not feed the) oyster" and "Vanessa from Queens" are ny current favourites, the first song just gets on my nerves a little, the rest varies from OK-ish to fine……
Currently listening to this weird and wonderful Pavement tribute
April 4, 2003 at 8:04 pm #92179the first time I heard "Do not feed the Oyster" I hated it. with a passion. NOw I think it’s okay. Weird how that happens. I recently bought Pig Lib, the new throwing muses, and the new crooked fingers but somehow instead of listening to them I keep putting on other stuff I had for years.
April 5, 2003 at 9:35 pm #92180I read that his first solo album was better so I bought that, but upon hearing it I think I like Pig Lib a lot more. It sounds like more of a band effort I guess, I dunno. It’s pretty difficult listening but there’s something about it that’s really cool.
April 8, 2003 at 3:30 pm #92181I wrote a bit about this album somewhere else, but I’m jumping back in defense if it is even needed. Most seem to like Pig Lib. I dug it upon first listen, but it seems to take time to grow on many.
The part of the interview above that makes sense in reguard to the album itself is where Stephen talks about Led Zeplein, and how their songs only got really good after hte vocals were over. I’m by no means a Zeplin fan, heck I can’t even spell there freakin’ name, but Jimmy Paige could wale and Stephen Malkmus puts his chops on display more than ever on this album.
The idea of Prog rock might scare away a few die-hard pavement-pop fans. But the album has the Vanessa from Queens and Oyster maddness to fill that void. I just love the rich sound of the album. It is so thick, almost vinyl in my mind. Everytime I press play I feel like I’m dropping the needle and kicking back to here a truely fine album.
I’m sure there will be other great albums this year, but this is the first I found. I’m looking forward to the future of SM and the Jicks. Quality will always follow him around. A pavement reunion would be almost too much to handle. I hope to catch the Jicks if possible, now with two albums the shows should get interesting.
peace
