Nice review of the Asheton Brothers/Mascis/Watt gig in Tilburg (in Dutch, translation will follow sometime this weekend)

        The translation:

        Stooges come alive
        by Helmut Boeijen
        Monday December 9 2002

The irony will not be lost on Ron and Scott Asheton. Thirty years are gone and now the brothers are playing a starring role in a tribute to the band that made them famous. What does that say about the life of this guitardevil and this animal on drums? Well, to put it mildly, their musical carreers after the split of the Stooges weren’t exactly very succesfull. A real reunion, also with legendary frontman Iggy Pop, despite yearlong rumours didn’t happen for the Asheton brothers. Accompanied by former Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis and with Mike Watt om vocals and bass, they played a sparkling show at the reasonably well filled big hall of 013 in Tilburg. The years have left their traces on those hardcore rock&rollers. Ron Asheton nowadays looks a lot like that friendly concierge from highschool, but with his crossfire of riffs from hell he still scares the shit out of many a small punk kid…

His accomplice on guitar, fuzzking Mascis 8), pushes the band even further towards the pain barrier. They are propelled forward by the elemantary basic beats from Scott Asheton, who, like a Belgian workhorse with a lot of pepper up his ass keeps an incredible, steady pace. The very likeable Watt at last is a very acceptable instant-Iggy, although the Stooges without Pop, that’s like a tiger without fangs…. In the meantime, the still not stale Stooges-sonbook does get the steelbrush treatment it deserves. Those middle-age men don’t play the bland, smooth greatest-hits show from our worst nightmares, no, they play the loudest rocking greatest hits show everyone could hope for! Afterwards only one question remains: is it the ringing of those Marshall amps or is it our ears still ringing in our head?

Thanks for the translation DB  I’ve heard a rumor that Ron Asheton will play on Iggy’s new album, on at least one song, no Scott though

Here’s another review of the Tilburg gig of Asheton/Asheton/Mascis/Watt with a short Mike Watt interview, which was obviously impaired by the loud music in the background….
It’s from a Dutch site, but it is in English:

Hey FC, nice find, strange interview, I think that the guy doing the interview just didn’t know anything at all about Mike Watt….
