A ‘real’ instrument (but nevertheless a strange one) is the Theremin on ‘Take a Run at the Sun’ by J Mascis :)

          I have a Theremin.

          And a Balalika.

And Depeche Mode sampled people jumping on wooden platforms for a drum track.

And Buddy Holly’s drummer played part of the "Peggy Sue" drum track on his thighs.

Umm. . . One of those Kraftwerk type Krautrock bands?

Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon recorded pots and pans for the drum track on their song "Car Carrier Blues"

and I know this isn’t an isntrument, but I seem to recall a "phoned in performance" of sorts by Deborah Harry on a Luscious Jackson album :P

A friend of mine told me about something called a "bass guitar." I guess it’s like a cross between a bass drum and a guitar.

Who was drinking what when they thought that one up?

I’ve heard a rumor that on early Eddie Cochrane albums they didn’t have a drum kit so some guy played cardboard boxes

A certain JP from Finland plays a mean kazoo on a certain xmas tape

The Beatles used a lot of strange instruments; take a trough filled with gravel and let your girlfriend (patty Boyd) walk in it on the rhythm and and you have a nice percussion ( White album).
An alarmclock in A day in the life, blowing air trough a straw in a glas of water (octopus’garden / yellow submarine.

That fantastic book: "the beatles recordingsessions" is loaded with these kind of trivia.

Question; Does Yoko Ono fits in this tread as a strange musical instrument

i can’t believe with the jazz fans on here, nobody has mentioned roland kirk. master of the manzello and the stritch, not to mention the water hose. (and he gets bonus points for being able to play three horns at once.)

I talked about Roland Kirk here before, but not for a long time;he also could play flute with his nose :!: the manzello and the stritch were medeval instruments he found around;the last 2 years of his life he was paralyzed on one side of his body but he kept playing anyway with just one hand.
I`m trying to put up a link to the AMG site about the Art Ensemble Of Chicago but the link is`nt working;they play everything but the kitchen sink.

And of course Sonic Youth and Nels Cline are famous for playing their guitars with everything, Files, Hammers, Eggbeaters, Remote controls, and toy dinosaurs (?)

And I’m told the drummer from phish plays a vacuum cleaner live.
