I have always loved Sonic Youth. I finally bought Daydream Nation and I know that Teen Age Riot is supposedly about J, so naturally I have been scrutinizing the lyrics and cannot make the connection. Anyone have any theories or knowledge on the matter?

First you say, that you have always loved Sonic Youth and then you state that you finally bought Daydream Nation. I don´t get it. That just won´t connect. I mean, that record is 12 years old and probably the best they ever did, so if you have always loved Sonic Youth you should have bought Daydream Nation roughly 12 years ago. Or am I missing something here?
Oh, and by the way, I´ve always loved Grandaddy and yesterday I finally got to see them on stage and it truly was awesome. So if they play anywhere near you guys, you should by all means go.

It is possible to have loved a band for a long time without having bought every single album. I’ve liked Sonic Youth since I heard them, too, but 12 years ago I was 10; come on now. Missing a few records doesn’t make you any less a fan.

I think the stuff in "Teenage Riot" about J is primarily the line:
"it takes a teenage riot to get me out of bed in the morning"probably where J’s slacker persona comes from…
Sorry kids, it wasn´t meant to be taken quite so seriously. You can be a fan of some band without owning any records at all for all I care. Probably because Daydream Nation is one of my alltime favourites it struck me as kind of odd. Bit like saying, you know I`ve always loved Nirvana and yesterday I finally gave Nevermind a listen.
I think the bit about the winter vacation refers to Js skiing holiday.
And while we´re on the subject of Dinsaur Jr in connection with Sonic Youth. My favourite scene from The Year Punk Broke is when Sonic Youth interview these juvenile New Kids On The Block Fans in Berlin and Thurston keeps asking: Is J Mascis your boyfriend? That´s so hilarious.

I guess, dimplwhatever, that what I meant was this: I have liked Sonic Youth since I first heard their music. "Always" is a relative term, depending on how long one has been aware of the existense of the band in question. I have not been what you would call a "fan" of theirs. I just simply have liked what I heard by them. About 4 years ago I bought Dirty and liked it a lot, I had never heard of them before that for whatever reason, maybe I lived under a fucking rock or something. For whatever reason I’m just now getting into them enough to want to buy more. It’s pretty simple when you think about it a little, we are each coming at this J Mascis business from a different angle. Rock on indeed!

just wanna recommend "confusion is sex", "experimental jet set trash and no star" and "washing machine." as for the moment they are my fave s.y. albums.
and of course "sister" where J plays guitar!

back on the topic. The song mentions Marshall Stacks in it which is definetly J. however it also says platform shoes which I don’t think is J

plus it says "..& j c mellencamp(hamlets.)" is this the john cougar mellencamp? hmm… didn’t notice that until now.

-Neil YoungThere is some distinctive J-style soloing on "Master-Dik", the last song of the album, so I am sure he plays on that one. I don’t hear him on any of the other songs though, so that might be his only contribution to "Sister".

For those who don’t know J even has contributed some backing vocals to the 1990 Goo album.
J says in the Fritz interview he doesn’t know if there is a relation between him and Teen Age Riot, but I guess it definitely exists.Lars
About GOO, J sings in "Tunic", "Mote" and "My friend Goo". Don Flaming also sings in two tracks.
Jayloumurph, Teenage Riot is included in DAYDREAM NATION, not in SISTER (PENDEJO).I think I rather like the TUFF GNARL version included in Mike Watt’s BALL-HOG OR TUG-BOAT.
