February 9, 2007 at 3:05 pm #125663I think the new album is such a big thing, that I rather wait for the release date. On that day I’ll put the album in my cd-player, push play button and close my eyes(ok, I might browse the papers inside or something)…

February 9, 2007 at 5:30 pm #125666Back to the cover art – you’ve all probably seen it’s a photo cover… I wondering who that person is stuffed down the back of the sofa. It looks like an old photo too.
No paintings, no drawings… damn shame I reckon… but then I would say that.
February 9, 2007 at 5:33 pm #125667Just out of interest, who prefers what? Paintings/drawings on the sleeve – i.e. Blender, Jonny etc, or photography ala Green mind etc?
February 9, 2007 at 6:44 pm #125668Pirating is not stealing. Stealing is taking something away from someone. The band still has their music, I have it too…they’re not out anything they had before. So, it’s not technically stealing. Hell, I just preordered the album…why? Because that will help Fat Possum make more albums and will help Dinosaur, Jr. tour more. That’s why I buy albums. The music isn’t the important part for me, it’s supporting a band I believe in. The CD is just something I get as a parting gift. I’m all for downloading. It keeps people from making garbage and selling it as if it’s good.
Also, this album is TOTALLY worth buying.

Apparently whoever was in the band’s management got their account yanked as well. Was that you Jeremiah?Ray Neades did an interview with J & The Fog years ago, they talked about downloading etc, think I remember the quote ‘whatever metallica’s against I’m for’. Sounds to me like they understand the file sharing madness after the release, out of their control for the most part, has it’s benefits as well I guess…getting the music out there, at least thats what I got from the article, can’t say for sure. Think Watt mentioned he makes more cash when people buy discs at shows…
so yeah, I’m definitely buying the disc from fat possum, the single as well, gonna buy a couple at the shows I go to as well…reacquaint some pals with Dino

ps->I am so looking forward to hearing these songs live…no doubt will be a thrill!

The American Capitalist system runs off of what makes corporations more money. As long as the major labels are against it, the courts will be. However, look at recent statements by Steve Jobs AND EMI…while they’re for people buying mp3s via itunes, they’re against putting copy protection on them. So people can dispearse freely. And yes, I’m 100% sure, having collegues who are lawyers doesn’t mean I know law, but you do learn a bit in the field.
I’ve been in a lot of bands over the years and I can say this: You make MUCH MORE money off of shows than you do off of record sales. Shows and merch are where bands make most of their money. Also, whoever quoted Watt as saying bands make more selling CDs at shows is 100% correct. When a label sells an album to a record store, they sell it wholesale…normally $8-10. The store sells it for $13-15 and the band gets roughly a dollar out of the wholesale price. When a band buy it’s own CD from the label, it pays wholesale and will sell it for $15, thus getting a $1 royalty from the label (which they rarely see due to having to pay back the costs of the recording, distro, etc.) and getting $5-7 per CD they sell. You may pay more for a CD at show, but a lot more makes it to the band.
Anyways, as it stands, I’m a pirater…a thief if you like…If a band of mine gets popular and it happens to me, I will be the last to complain…at least people are excited about the music and will come to the shows. That’s the important thing.
February 10, 2007 at 12:42 am #125673I did download it, and am very glad I did. I wont share the cd, because its obvious the label and management dont want it out.
I really like the cd. It is more like the Fog to me then early Dino. More More Lighty then Free So Freey. If Your Living is a Friday or Saturday night album, then Beyond is like a Sunday afternoon album to me.
Hell, I could die tomorrow, and I wanted to hear that album. I’ll buy more then one copy, attend at least 3-4 shows on the next tour, and buy every type of shirt they have in my size. I just bought those ugly ass shoes for some insane amount on EBAY!
I do see where file sharing may hurt a bands cd sales, but I do think it creates more fans of the bands. More fans, means bigger crowds at concerts.
As far as the album covers, Your Living…, Where You Been, and Green Mind are my favorites. I haven’t liked the Without A Sound, Hand It Over, or Free So Free covers at all.
February 10, 2007 at 1:14 am #125674Awesome prelisten song, cool album cover!

Will probably wait for the rest. Not against sharing, think it’s a great way to spread music to countries where the avarage salary is still a small fraction of what it is in US and western Europe. If it pisses off the big record corporations and and bands like Metallica then that’s just a bonus.
