Roughly a dollar is about right……..I guess it depends on a few factors but as I mentioned here before………….I actually saw a check that had been issued and sent for something like .89 cents. I was waiting for a friend to get ready to go out and I was being nosey around their office space………..When I asked why did you get a check for .89 cents the answer was ………..Oh, we must have sold a CD………they have four folks in their band. I really don’t know how that works.

You may pay more for a CD at show, but a lot more makes it to the band.

and what is the best part about selling your own cd’s at a show ?
      drum roll………………………………….
You can avoid paying taxes………..fireworks…………..(play song below)

A little music to enjoy your morning coffe and the rest of this post with.

avoiding taxes is something everyone should look into………..I’m all for paying taxes, it keeps our municipalities in running order. But eventually, at the end of the year…….it’s like enough is enough Mother Truckers……..go like bother someone who has mega-millions and leave me ALONE.
If you invest money and you don’t have a lot of money………by the time you pay your broker and you pay taxes on any financial gains………..at the end of the year that leaves you NOTHING.
You have to make A LOT of money before you can jump out of that loop of getting slowly screwed on every financial transaction.

I really tried to exercise restraint and not download this album. May isn’t that far off. Well, I failed. I decided to just try and find it out of curiousity… Once I found it, I couldn’t help myself. It was like Christmas coming early. I don’t feel too guilty. I have most of the dino albums on vinyl and cd. There are quite a few that I have on vinyl and 2 copies on cd (SST/Merge remasters, Sire/Rhino remasters). I will definitely buy the album when it comes out and no doubt spend a fortune on concert tickets and travel expenses (not that the band will profit from the money I give cheap motels).

The leaked version is not pristine… The sound quality is not perfect. I’m not sure what the source is, but I expect the official release to sound much better. Either way, it’s an amazing album. It’s everything we’ve been waiting for and more. I agree with the other people who compared the sound to More Light era Mascis. There is definitely an element of that. It also sounds a bit like late era dino, but played by the original band. Most importantly, the songs are there. I think big fans will be more than satisfied.

Here’s what I hope they do (if they want to move some units)… First off, move up the release date. They might sell more copies to casual fans if they act fast on this leak. This is a really early leak. I don’t know if waiting 2 months to get the official product out there is a good idea. Second… Copy what the New York Dolls did last year. I already had a copy of the New York Dolls reunion album. However… If you went to the show, they were selling the cd. If you bought the cd at the show, you got a coupon allowing you to stay after the show and get your cd signed by the band. Everyone should be copying this! Bands could move a lot of cds by offering a little meet and greet and autographs. Sure I downloaded it, but I’ll buy it the day it comes out, and I would buy one at the show for the chance of getting autographs.

        $.02

I think it’s kind of amusing how some people need to justify that they’re downloading the album.
Even more so, that some who’s been avid supporters of downloading albums in the past suddenly are having second thoughts just because the album happens to be released by dino.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to pick a fight, and I’m confident that fans who download it now, will buy the album when it’s released.

I’m not sure if a quick release of the album is possible, cd’s and inlay cards have to be printed, vinyl has to be pressed(hopefully,) and there’s a lot of stuff that’s got to be taken care of. I think Fat Possum has done what they could, with launching the preorder deal. So if you’re in a part of the world that Fat Possum will ship to, I suggest you preorder the album, and then download the album from where you usually download music. That way the band gets the money they deserve, and you don’t have to write a thesis defending your actions :)
As for the buying an album at the show = autograph, it seems like a good idea, but then again -what about the folks who can’t afford two copies and want the one they bought in may signed at the concert in september ? Also, I’m not sure the guys would be comfortable with people, to some extent, having to pay for their autographs. But then again, maybe they do.

http://www.fatpossum.com $13, when has a clean conscience been this cheap ?

This is becoming almost the industry standard — both the latest Isis and Jesu albums leaked approximately three months before the official release date, and I’m sure there are many more bands I don’t listen to who’ve experienced a similar thing with their latest releases.

I have friends who are/have been working musicians who don’t think twice about downloading albums and then never buying the released "official" version, some of whom have already downloaded the new Dino and likely won’t buy it when it comes out. These same people also gripe about the horrible state of the music industry and about how hard it is to make a living as a musician. I’ve stopped trying to figure out the logic there.

One of them told me that the new Dino is on megaupload — if those of you with "juice" want to get on it and have the album removed from there, I don’t feel bad about having ratted them out.

I will not be downloading the album, because I’m a total dork and get a charge out of counting down the days until a release date. The f-possum preorder dealio is cool, but 4 bucks shipping and handling is kinda wack for a $13 disc. I’ll go to my local Newbury Comics and buy the album for like $11.88, which is their usual new release sale price.

My 2 cents: I don’t think less of those who download for free, but I’m just not into it. If I put a lot of work into something only to see it floating around the net, I’d be pretty pissed. Not even for the $$$$ factor, but because it just seems like a violation.

Final Note: Does anyone know if the new joint is coming out on wax??? I’d love to have a CD and an LP.

I think you may have overlooked the distinct difference between a leaked, pre-release date download vs post release downloads. Post release some bands seem to have accepted it’s gonna be out there no matter what, pre release, in my opinion they own what they produced, thats where my harm reduction deal comes into play… :P ;)

I feel for Fat Possum as well, have seen posts by online promotion team of Fat Possum requesting all full album links be taken down & give permission to post a song. Put forward the case that leaks like this do hurt bands & Fat Possum. Some blogs have links to the whole album, request fans listen, delete the songs in 24 hrs & buy the disc…although it doesn’t look like they all follow their own advice.

As someone said above, couple months before release date leaks seem to be the standard these days. Hopefully management teams have contingency plans in place, seems like the case here.

Dinosaur Jr have been great with the fans, partnering with sites like this one & Free So Free, no problems with video or audio recording at shows. Lets hope it continues…on both sides of the artist/fan deal ;)

Thanks for that post! You’re totally right — Dino has, and continues to be, great with fans. The whole freesofree.net thing is really cool!

well i dont know- i think if bands and labels really want to prevent leaks- they can- built to spill kind of did it with the whole mike jones thing, and the new modest mouse has yet to leak. i think the only people who go so far out of their way to find this stuff are usually pretty big fans- i guess there is a difference between downloading an album early- and just downloading stuff in general just to avoid paying for it. i always like to get stuff that im interested in as soon as i can- but its still great to go and buy it when it comes out. no matter how many times ive heard it i still look forward to the release date. look at the shins-that album leaked back in mid october and was like number 2 in sales the week it came out. anyway- the first time i heard beyond i was a little bit dissapointed- but now i think its the best J has done since hand it over- i would say its more of a cross between more light and hand it over than anything on free so free. its pretty stripped down- not many guitar effects- but it still sounds great. its a great album.

This is a great point. It is the label’s responsibility to ensure the album doesn’t get leaked early. It CAN be done. This is why Fat Possum needs to step up and do something significant about the early leak. Telling the kind folks at Oink to take it down (which they did) is too little too late. Once the leak has hit the internet it’s over and there is NO control AND there shouldn’t be any control. I suggest partnering w/iTunes and making it available via download. You don’t have to wait for CD artwork to print or vinyl to press. The quicker labels embrace technology the better they will be. Wake up Fat Possum and be a pioneer.

Side note: Andrew Bird’s new album "Armchair Apocrypha" has a release date of mid-March. I’ve had an excellent quality rip for almost three weeks now. Guess who the label is? Fat Possum!

Exactly, there’s a difference there. As for this album, I will probably not try to track it down and download it, simply because I know I will buy it and want to be excited when I finally get it. Had I already heard all the songs over and over, there’s no way I could even pretend to be as thrilled about the release when there are no songs to hear for the first time…

I probably has, because I don’t see it. At least not the same difference as you point out, feel free to explain it to this ignoramus :)
The only difference I see is that:

Before it’s released you have no means of buying the album, and so I can understand fans that can’t resist downloading it, so they can hear it immediately, and then buy it when it’s released.

After the album is released the fans can buy the album, and at this stage there’s really no ‘legit,’ reason to merely download it instead of purchasing it.

That’s why I think that the people who download the album now should preorder the record from Fat Possum.
