Okay, I havent seen one of those, and I think it will be usefull. I have some questions to ask but I dont want to make new threads for each one.
This site is the most usefull gearwise http://www.freesofree.net/digging_up_bones/ I think, the only thing which annoys me that some pictures are missing and that there are lots of spelling and technical mistakes, like the interviewer calls Jazzmasters Jaguars and so on.So basically he used his first guitar, a ’65 Jazzmaster for the first 3 records I think, correct me if I’m wrong, and Lou used a Jag.
Here’s a picture of it:
Another:
And another one is up in my avatar.
Here’s Lou’s Jag:
But the cleares image of it is in the Freak Scene video, thats when it wasn’t covered in stickers.
BUT, I’m not sure if this is his first Jazzmaster, he said that he got his first one for 300$ in Slimy Bob’s Guitar Ripoff Shop and it was unfinished and it had Grover tuners installed. I’ve heard that the sunburst Jazzmaster above is the first Jazzmaster, since its in all early images and such and I think I heard from somewhere that it was refinished.
Up next:
His Jazzmasters are all from the 60’s, He has a ’62 blue/tortoise pickguard, ’65 Lake Placid Blue/white pickguard and ’59 blue/gold-anodized pickguard.
The ’62 blue/turtoise pickguard was used in the late 90’s-2000’s the Redding Festival ’07 and it’s on the cover of the J Mascis BBC sessions, also its in the Green Mind cd book thing. I’ve seen this also around his tours with the Fog and other. The pickup covers look really weird, they appear black, but they are white on the sides. Black Marker maybe? Also, it has witch hat knobs and a TOM (all of his guitars have them). It was repaired in around 2005 and stolen in ’06.
I cant find any close up pictures of this, you can see it on the Digging Up Bones interview in the link I posted above the page and on youtube on various videos.

Whoops, heres one. Its not a very good picture, but you get its
And another picture I found!
’65 Lake Placid Blue Jazzmaster- I think this guitar was used as just a back up guitar, I’ve seen it around in some pictures of on a Marshall page and I’ve seen it being used after the gear theft as a back up. Heres a picture

There was a thread about the gear theft which had a full body picture which stood by his amps on a stand which I can’t find now.The ’59 black/gold-anodized pickguard was a black Jazzmaster from the 50’s which was refinished, witch I dont know any other information about. He used this during most of the J Mascis + The Fog tours. I think this was also stolen, the page about the Dino stolen gear says nothing about it but I’m not seeing it anywhere else. Picture:

Also the infamous ‘Amma’ Jazzmaster, this was used around ’06 and was stolen. Had a unique orange finish, pearloid pickguard, a tom and it was covered in Amma stickers, therefore the name Amma. Most known for the Download festival Mountain Man performance.

He uses his signature custom Jazzmasters on stage now, and a couple of vintage sunburst Jazzmasters. Philip Virus has a video on Youtube of J playing a black Jazzmaster, so thats a new guitar (or maybe he just used it for that one show)… I think there is 2 signature jazzmasters. One in dark purple and one a bit lighter. You can see the difference in some pictures, maybe its just the lighting, who knows.
Pics:
This is one that he used after the gear theft, you can also see the Reissue hand wired Marshall amp and the Lake Placid Blue Jazzmaster.
Purple JM:

And after this, watch the Been There All The Time video, you can see that the one in the video is kinda darker than the one in the pictures.Okay, now other guitars:
He says that he uses Fenders on stage mostly, simply because they’re harder to play, noisier, sound better/unique and he likes the challenge. He uses Gibsons with P90’s for rythm and chords but not on stage, only in some shows from Where You Been. He doesn’t prefer Gibsons because they have only one sound and are really easy to play on.
Fender ’58 Tele:
He got it especially for Green Mind and used it together with the other Esquire on most Green Mind and later albums and shows. Can’t find a picture, but you can see it on youtube.’57 Fender Esquire
Says he paid 2000$ for it, it was used in the Feel The Pain video, havent seen any footage with it, except I think the Jerry Jones show on Never Brought It, but I’m not sure about this.

Heres a picture, It seems that the pickguard has been changed^
‘Busting right through these…’- J
Gibsons:
Can’t be bothered to write about these, since I only saw him using the Goldtop LP in the Start Choppin video.
Read it here http://www.freesofree.net/digging_up_bones/gibsons.htmAlso, he’s been seen with various Strats like the Rory Galagher custom strat and some black and white ones.
Effects:
J says he doesn’t use much effects, but its not true! He uses loads, heaps and heaps of stuff. As you probably know, he’s an EHX fan and most of his pedals are made by them. He has 10 vintage Rams Head Big Muffs and about a dozen of other vintage ones. His main ones are the Ram’s head and the 1st edition BM’s, the one with the triangular knob formation. No need for pictures here eh? Oh well, I’ll just post his collection

His other fuzz pedals are a Voodoo Labs Bosstone Fuzz (Never seen a picture of this in his setup), a MXR Blue Box(vintage, with block letters) and a Black Univox Superfuzz. He also says that he has an Orange version of the Superfuzz. In the later shows, he’s been spoted with a Fulltone OCD and a HBE Germania which was on during whole shows. He also has a custom box which makes the volume of his big muffs drop down by 50%As his modulation effects he uses a Ibanez Analog Delay, EHX DMM, EHX Small Clone, EHX Electric Mistress (this is a weird version of it, its green, but as big as a Deluxe Mistress), EHX Clone Theory- I think the clone theory makes all the sweeping sounds as heard on The Wagon. Also, he uses a Custom Audio Elec. Super Tremolo with 2 different modes, one choppy as hell, one analogish warm sound (The one heard on Never Brought It and The Lung), and he uses a Lovetone Meatball and a MXR Phase 100(You can see a difference, most songs that he uses the phaser on, the waves are kinda short and wide, which the Phase 100 can pull off very well)
To control everything he uses the Custom Audio Elec. 4X4 pedal controler. A great thing for vintage effects, they are connected to the controler, which is true bypass and they’re kept in his rack, unlike the earlier shows when they were all on the floor.
All pictures up on the Digging Up Bones interview page.
Now for his acoustic effects:
Left to right
SansAmp Bass Driver–>Boss TU2–>ZVEX Purple Lo-Fi Loop Junkie–>Ibanez Analog Delay–>ZVEX Purple Fuzz Factory.
A pretty cool, simple setup, the bass driver is the deep distorted sound you hear on some of the bootlegs. The Loop Junkie is used on songs with intoduction solos like ‘Get Me’, ‘Alone’. The delay is also used on some clean solos.Don’t have the time to do the amps now, heres the whole picture of his ‘rig’

Yeah, I know this kinda rips off the main interview, but I added some stuff and I think this should be pretty helpfull.

I cant find any close up pictures of this, you can see it on the Digging Up Bones interview in theif you watch the umass amherst video from 93, you see the jazzmaster he uses is natural finish, and the pick up covers look like the ones on the 62′ blue/tortoise pickguard. So I was thinking that one might have been refinished to blue.

By the way, a web page had the Dinosaur lollapalooza 05′ show (the one in the picture) available for a short time on video. I remember seing 2-3 songs on some web page. Never found it again
anyone else saw this?April 16, 2007 at 4:49 pm #127585Quote:I heard on this forum that he had a custom box made to drop the volume of his muff by a half, but I dont really trust this.trust it !

This info came direct from Kevin Sweeney (who set up the equipment before the shows etc) — he toured with the band on the reunion tour, up until around the end of 2006.

Yup believe it, those words came from J’s guitar tech himself. He would know.
April 17, 2007 at 2:08 am #127587Yea – I’ve got all this stuff
.Wow – very interesting. Thank you for putting this together.
April 17, 2007 at 8:33 am #127588Edited (as in the part with the big muff custom pedal)
No, the sunburst jazzmaster is not his first Jazzmaster. He said that the first one he bought came with a different bridge, but the sunburst has the stock bridge.
April 18, 2007 at 1:27 am #127589There are pics floating around of the unfinished first Jazzy. I think he’s wearing a demin jacket while playing it…that’s the pic that sticks out in my mind the most anyways.
That last pic (the Guitar Geek type pic) is basically saying that the ’69 Marshall Major head is not going to any cabinet/s. What’s the deal with that? J doesn’t seem the type that would have amps as props….I think someone screwed that pic up a bit.
The refinished blue Tele has the mirror pickguard on it, even in that pic. It looks like it’s black, but it’s the lighting.
J also has a Keith Richards Tele from the 70’s and that actually is the only guitar that I know of that J owns with a humbucker. J said that after playing that Tele he could understand why people liked humbuckers.
He also has a Vox, a Mosrite, a Danelectro, Vega 6 string banjo and various Gibson and Martin acoustics. J has a Lake Placid Blue Jaguar that was in the Out There video and another video as well. There was a sunburst guitar of some sort that he threw off the mountain in the Out There video, that wasn’t the Jag. Take a Run at the Sun video he gives flying lessons to a blue strat.
