Hey,

Thats the reason I don’t like Automatic that crappy drum machine sound…ick But DB your right those are two killer songs. Hmmm wonder if Bobbie G taught Jim Reid a little something about swinging those mike stands at people…sounds kinda familiar I have seen the JAMC a couple times myself, was not disappointed at all…great slides behind them…TV and Iggy…cool.

Actually a disc I thought I would like but really didn’t was by John Moore and The Expressway…Expressway Rising

A disc I am still looking for is the William Reid Lazycame stuff…god some thru some download sites but I Need More.

dimpfelmoser-I think my age is why I could`nt come up with a list of things that I used to be crazy about;I have`nt been listeing to this music long enough,I bought my first album in this vein in 1993 so 8 years on is`nt really enough time.
The albums I don`t like was the best I came up with. You`ve been listening to this stuff for alot longer so it`s easier for you to come up with artists that don`t stand up.

Hey Dimpfelmoser,

I found something that really hasn’t stood the test of time for me…The Psychedelic Furs I still like two songs…India and Into You Like A Train but the rest

I went through my vinyls and had a look, which ones still do it for me and which ones don’t. It was an interesting question, though I found no singular pattern.

Here are my lists:
The ‚Oh No’ list includes mostly stuff out of the 80’s: The Cure, Japan, Killing Joke, Madness, David Bowie , Nick Cave, Wedding Present, Sugarcubes/ Björk.

The ones I still feel fond for are more mixed(have I got to mention Dinosaur Jr?)
MBV, JAMC, Gun Club, The Fall, The Go-Betweens, John Cale/ Velvet Underground, Big Star, and early 80’s stuff as well like the Associates, the Specials and the B 52’s.

A third list generated itself out of punk records like the Birthday Party, the Swell Maps, Clash, Sex Pistols or the Ramones. I still feel much respect for these records, but do not listen to them more than very once in a while. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they’re out of an area before ‘my time’. They’re more like history to me.

The titles out of my CD collection mostly are too new to estimate them like this. Here I go with Salamiguy

well, isn’t Darklands the album with Happy when it rains on it. I’m most certain that there is a drumcomputer featured there and not a proper drummer. definately sounds like it. But unfortunately I can´t check because Darklands (as most of my vinyl) is at my parents house in Essen. Anyway, I´m positive that it was the tour where they promoted Darklands when I saw JAMC perform with a drumcomputer. I remember I was doing my social service so that must have been the spring of 87.

d
Yeah Psychodelic Furs didn’t really do too well in the last ten years.

TOM WAITS!!!!!! Always.
MIles Davis, Nick Drake, Ramones, Scott Walker, Willie Nelson, Spacemen 3, Stereolab, Nick Cave w/ The Birthday Party & The Bad Seeds, John Lee Hooker, Son House, Coltrane, Sun Ra, VU,………….
Man, the list goes on and on. Really. There are SO MANY great bands and musicians that are always refreshing, every listen. I could go on and on.

Hey Flying Cloud,

Sounds like we have a lot in common music wise…cool. Lot of my stuff is from the eighties as well…forgot to mention the later Bowie stuff Killing Joke…god I have some vinyl of that as well…think I was blocking that memory as it is to traumatic..what a bunch of crap..embarassing to own actually. Maybe I will BBQ it later

Hmmm seems people prefer to list the things that have stood the test of time versus admitting to their once guilty pleasures Or maybe they just never bought as much crap as other people…just kidding. I have tons of stuff I can’t go thru, storing my vinyl downstairs currently…next to the guy who lives under my stairs Hopefully he will exit someday and I can retrieve my vinyl safely and make a more detailed list of crap for you.

Some of my list though is stuff that I wasn’t around for…Stooges, Dolls, MC5 etc etc but is just so classic that I can’t imagine existing without it…yeah I know D predictable but hey it works for me

yeah, Killing Joke are really crappy.
How could I ever buy that.

I’ve read somewhere, that JAMC asked Epic Soundtracks to play drums on that tour in the late eighties, and that they decided to go on tour with the machine instead as he refused. Epic Soundtracks has been a former Swell Maps member and J played some guitar on one of his solo albums. Well, Epic died a few years ago.

It didn’t annoy me so much, that there was no drummer on that JAMC tour, but the gig lasted less than an hour with no encores

Talking about someone who has stood the test of time: Grant Hart (his song "All of my senses" was just being played on a quite good Belgian radio-station I’m listening to at the moment, now they are playing AC/DC’s "Highway to Hell" , strange people these Belgians!!!, but a great song as well….)

Hey Den Buck,

Gotta say a big YES to the Grant Hart deal…that song is amazing. 2541 (single version) and Come Come consistently make my playlist…daily

Still trying to get my head around the idea of hearing Grant Hart followed by AC/DC Sounds like a great radio station, not many good ones locally here…thank god for freakscene.net radio

2541 is one of the most beautifil songs ever made, oh, I like that one!

Some more songs i heard on that Belgian radio-station before I fell asleep last night (dreaming about being burned as a witch, but that’s another topic ) were:
Nirvana – Rape me
Posies – Start a life
Spain – She haunts my dreams
House of Love – Christine
Triffids – Goodbye little boy (Oh, I love the Triffids)
Fun Lovin’ Criminals – Bump

I think that’s not too bad for a night-show!

I’m pretty familiar with all the jazz giants you listed. I love Miles Davis, Coltrane, Ornette, Monk, all those guys. How could you not if you’re into jazz? Those guys are pioneers of the music. As far as blues goes, my knowledge is a little more limited there, but I do enjoy Robert Johnson (of course), Bessie Smith, Leadbelly. I don’t know too many people who know Son House, but he is just amazing. Really dark. The 3 "Blind’ guys I’m not so familiar with except for Willie.

Oh, and you can’t forget Leonard Cohen, and (most of) Dylan’s work, as well as Mr. Johnny Cash for standing the "test of time." I for one am suprised Johnny is still around. Very glad though…………Townes Van Zandt is another I just thought of. Like I said, the list just goes on and on and on. whew.

What Blind Willie do you mean?Johnson or McTell?
Blind Lemon Jefferson was a Texas singer/guitarist back in the 1920`s,his records sold extremely well,he was quite popular. His proteges included T-Bone Walker and Lightnin Hopkins, who hung around him and helped him out. While up in Chicago around the time of the stock market crash he had a heart attack and died in a snowbank, they found him days later. The Jefferson Airplane was named after him.
Blind Willie Johnson was a Texas slide master who mostly stuck to gospel music, but played it in a blues manner, his voice was so rough he`d make Tom Waits sound smooth!Very spooky stuff he recorded, all during the 20`s,stop recording in 1930,died in a fire in 1950.
Blind Willie McTell was once namechecked by a Dylan song with his name.He was from Georgia, first recorded "Statesboro Blues"in 1928,a tune the Allman Brothers cut in 1969
His songs could be pretty violent at times,he made gansta rap over 70 years ago!He recorded one last session in 1956,one tune "the Dyin Crapshooters Blues"is like a Tom Waits tune.

Townes Van Zandt,I was talking to Deepsludge about,I think I`ll come up with a new thread about and see if we can get some discussion about Townes going.

Oh sorry, Blind Willie Johnson damn it. Yes that is the one. Oh yeah, speaking of Waits, Howlin’ Wolf was a big influnce on him. Especially his singing. Another great.
