I work for a power company as a design technician. Part of my responsibilities include assessing damage during power outages and storms. Storms are exciting to work because we get to play hero, but they can also be very dangerous with downed power lines. This morning the rain and wind became too much for our system the bear, and a storm was called. We work until everyone has their lights back on, thats how it is. I worked 20 hours last Christmas, we’ll see how bad today is. Wish me luck, I may need it.
November 10, 2006 at 11:08 am #123234Damn… 20 hours?!?! I can barely make it through a regular 8.
Good luck… be safe.

November 10, 2006 at 3:32 pm #123236Just got back in for a break. The nice thing about working storms is that they’re catered by the company. So when I got back to the office today there was ceasar salad, lasagna, cookies, bread, and sodas waiting. Since the storm occured during normal work hours the pay is the same as I typically get. When I get called from home or work em’ during non work hours its double time. Todays storm hasn’t been too bad, we did encounter a downed pole with a transformer on the ground. About a block was out. The wind knocked a tree down and it took a pole with it. We had to secure the site and wait for a crew to come clear the road. I wonder if any other freaksceners have exciting jobs?

November 10, 2006 at 3:51 pm #123238Well I do nothing at the moment apart from art at college. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna take a degree in astrophysics now so hopefully I will have a cool job at the end. I’d love to do something contributing to our knowledge of space, the things out there are amazing

I looked at NASA and you need a minimum of a masters degree just to work there as an intern. Still it would be way cool to learn about that stuff.

So I think I would be willing to work really hard if I could maybe get a job at the Brittish Space Agency or something like that, I’m gonna ask my teachers for realistic advice on what I could end up doing and take it from there; otherwise I guess it’s engineering

November 13, 2006 at 5:26 am #123245Here we go again. I got called at 2:00 am tocome in because another big wind/rain storm hit. I just got to the office and today is going to be a long one. Lots of people are out of power, and the weather service says it isn’t bad yet. Wish me that luck again.

A week or two ago there was a big storm. Where I live didn’t get hit too bad but a town I used to live in lost power for days. I saw it on the news…well the local news. Trees were down everywhere and a pole too.
