Boron
Location: wellington, new zealandI met J.Mascis last night!
Awww yeah! After sooooo long J played my city – even better in a small intimate venue…gawd i can hardly think, it was only 8 hours ago…. I took like 125 pictures on my digital camera. I thought I’d never see him in the flesh.
Someone posted a gig review here a few months ago saying J just walked onto the stage with a backpack and a guitar case, quietly sets himself up and just starts playing – Yep – so humble.
He pulled out every Dino classic you can think of, including the cover of ‘Just Like Heaven’, ‘Little Fury Things’, Freak Scene’, ‘The Lung’, ‘Get Me’ and indulged us in soo many spastic/heavenly lead jams through the Lo Fi Loop Junky and the Fuzz Factory. Mental.
I walked over after the encore and spat out a few words of star struck gibberish, shook his hand and got him to sign my copy of "You’re Living All Over Me". Man, what a night!
The acoustic sounded grrrreat through the FF and the Junkie….. amazingly like the classic Dino lead sound – thick but gritty with loads of balls and depth and sustain for days. I think there was a SC PU installed in the top of the guitar – no feedback or squeals (apart from the intentional ones) – he ran everything through a sansamp direct to the desk.
J really stretched out on the leads – with his typically amazing and chaotic feel although I kinda got the impression he wasn’t too competent (or maybe he wasn’t TRYING to be competent) with the loop junkie – things got wonderfully out of hand at times and the FF was set to boost the hell out of the volume so when he hit it after a gentle acoustic period your clothing moved on your body. And after every song it was only ‘Thanks alot" in that cracked little voice. Magic.
A wonderful mess. I suspect several of us there were trying hard to hold back happy little tears at times.
Oh yeah – the pix are B/W cause i was shooting in ‘Desert Storm’ infra green mode which looks crazy until you change it to grayscale…..I didn’t wanna put a flash on J when i was so close – also my camera sprays lasers all over the place when it’s focusing and I felt that would be a little wack considering the really intimate nature of the gig. I also had one really good spot, and didn’t fancy my chances of moving anywhere else so many of the images are V similar…. Oh well.
