It seems to me that the people complaining never really got into the original band (even though what they did led to the J stuff they may like). That leads to threads like the one complaining that they only did songs from the first three albums. Only a fool would post something like that. All three of the guys were very nice when I met them in NC (especially Lou!), so anyone name calling or complaining is not really a fan, doesn’t really understand their music, or is really just some asshole whose up close, starfucker moment with J didn’t work out because everyone saw right through him. How can you expect logic from people who complain about volume at a Dino show? It’s fucking ridiculous!

That’s fine with me, I love songs from the later albums too but I’m perfectly happy just hearing stuff from the first three and totally understand why that’s all they’re going to play. Someone who says your ears shouldn’t hurt after a punk/rock show is insane. I don’t think (except when I’ve worn earplugs) I’ve ever left a rock show without ringing in my ears. That’s why I bring earplugs. Granted, Dino/J are the loudest but I expect loud from just about everyone.
July 27, 2005 at 5:41 pm #111293Never posted before, but I was at the Toronto show. Great sound, vocals not lost, loud enough to feel and stay with you, but not uncomfortable, 1/3 back. Not a regular concert goer for years, and 41. Go figure… Amazing show, J into it, Murph great, Lou connecting (inspired me to finally check out his stuff- love Emoh, see what I’ve been missing) The audience, well, someone said "mellow". Can’t argue, where I was, anyway. I couldn’t catch everything Lou was saying once because of people talking. My question, did Lou say something about Poledo? Wishful thinking? Anyway, they didn’t play it… Anyone hear anything?

It’s fucking ridiculous! What’s ridiculous is not being able to hear your alarm clock go off the next day, or to have ringing in your ears for the next three days so bad that you can’t hear anyone speaking to you properly.

Doesn’t matter if you were a Dinosaur Jr. fan for 20 years, or just heard of them that morning and went to the show on a lark. The bottom line is that you go to this, or any concert to enjoy yourself. Doesn’t matter if your Dinosaur’s biggest fan, or were dragged along by some friend, you want to have a good time at a concert. I did not have a good time at this show. Like I said, I was dreading J’s solo’s towards the end.

The 40 bucks! And the hearing damage
"andyfest " wrote:I’m sorry not everyone has enjoyed the shows as much as I have but I’d be a little more understanding if the criticisms were legitimate and not complaining about the volume or how much J says between songs.I think it’s a legitimate bitch/complaint. I have no problem with a loud show, but this was something else! I know it’s Dino Jr, and loud is what they are famous for, but good lord, this was to much! There is a line between loud and Jet engine, and Dino crossed it many times.
The sign of any good show is that afterwards you want to rush home and listen to the band again, or want to rush out to your favorite music store and buy some more of their stuff. The last thing I wanted to do after this show was pop on You’re living all over me. What a pisser.
Anyways, see you guys at the The Poises/Lou Barlow at Lee’s show in October!

August 15, 2005 at 3:17 pm #111297hahaha, he shoulda been there at the last J + the fog tour with dave and kyle, i think my ears bled… and it was fucking awesome. i couldnt hear j or daves vocals in the least.
August 16, 2005 at 2:43 am #111298I don’t see why Jeff and others shouldn’t be allowed to think Dinosaur Jr is too loud. Why would that upset the rest of you? If you didn’t think it was too loud for you, fine. But let others have their own opinions. I don’t think anyone is saying Dinosaur Jr is too loud just to be an ass, or just to criticize the band. I think the "they’re too loud" comment is their honest opinion/feeling/experience of the concert they went to.
I was at the concert in Stockholm last week, August 9, and I think it was WAY TOO LOUD. I love Dinosaur and J.
Dino/J is easily my favourite band/artist ever. I listen to them everyday. But I have to say the concert was too loud. Thank god I wore earplugs. With earplugs, it was okay, or almost okay. I found some good earplugs, which made it possible for me to enjoy the show somewhat. But I did wish they’d be less loud. Even with earplugs, it was too loud, I have to say.So I didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have enjoyed it. I didn’t leave thinking it was a fantastic concert, because of this. The one thing that made the concert only "good" was the much too high volume. Everything else was great: seeing J in front of me, so very close to me, the setlist, everything was great, except the loudness of the music.
Usually, I do love loud, but this was beyond loud. This was more like hell on earth. It was like a-bombs constantly going off inside your ears. It wasn’t fun. Still, seeing the band, and seeing J outside the venue before the concert made it a great night, but it could have been an even better night.
August 16, 2005 at 6:27 am #111299hah, its weird weve never had these people who think its too loud around much till now. and the dinosaur shows i saw were fucking loud, but defientely NOT as loud as J shows ive seen in the past
August 16, 2005 at 7:00 am #111300Never walked out of a Dino show thinking it was too loud. I did walk out of some shows that were supposed to sound like angels on snow, but ended up being so fucking loud, it made me want to slide under my seat in pain–I sure as hell should have asked for my money back… That means the the sound tech was either deaf or uncaring or unprofessional. A lot of shows, I thought, started out OK but ended up being at the level of uncomfortable and unenjoyable.
To expose your hearing in certain situations, where the decibel level is over a certain ratio, you may, in the long run, lose parts of your hearing. And like hell I would want that to happen to my hearing.August 16, 2005 at 7:01 am #111301I saw three shows on the recent tour, and didnt think it was as loud as the Without a Sound or Hand it Over tour shows.
I’m curious if the people that think the shows were too loud are just seeing J/Dino for the first time?
Its usually pretty easy to tell who in a Dino crowd is seeing the band for the first time. Â They usually cover their ears, and lean over to their friends ear to talk about how damn loud it is. I remember the first time I went, and couldn’t hear the alarm clock the next morning.
I love the way you actually feel the music with the volume. I know how loud they like to play. If I’m going to see 1 show, I dont wear earplugs. If Im going to several shows in a row, I wear them.
August 16, 2005 at 12:19 pm #111302I’m regretting not going to one of the club dates instead of just Central Park. I was pretty close to the stage and it was the perfect volume. I wanted my ears to hurt dammit!!
August 16, 2005 at 12:56 pm #111303It depends on the venue. HOB in Vegas didn’t have it loud enough! I like hearing them loud. The loudest I saw them was at the 9:30 Club in ’89 and Masquerade in Atlanta ’92. Out of the 6 times I’ve seen them only LalaPalooza in ’93 was tamer than the HOB Vegas. They still sounded good though.
August 16, 2005 at 1:44 pm #111304all the shows i’ve been to since the early 90s-i’ve always planted myself in front of J.
that way i’m not dependent on the p.a. for vaiance in spl…
as a guitarist i’m not that there to hear everything, altho’ this is my favorite band
i just really like J’s guitarspank
