1. Great to see some people discussing Uncle Tupelo on this site. I know we’re not here to talk about them but they are my favorite band of all time hands down and it’s good to see that some other folks that are into Dinosaur are open enough to like that kind of music too. UT used to cover Dinosaur live too which I think is a result of UT recording at Fort Apache and having been influenced by Dino’s music. J is actually mentioned in "Learning How to Die" which is supposedly a book about Wilco but is more about UT than anything.
2. Can anyone here convince me that They Always Come isn’t the best tune on Bug? That song is a sonic marvel.
April 28, 2006 at 4:17 pm #116811Yeah I got into UT not long after getting into Dino.Still Feel Gone is one of the greatest records as far as I`m concerned.
They Always Come might even be the greatest Dino song though we could debate that.
May 2, 2006 at 2:53 pm #116812They rock. Very cool that you’re a fan and I definately acknowledge UT’s place in history but, I believe they come nowhere close to Wilco (or Son Volt, for that matter) when it comes to musical quality. I chalk it up to Jay and Jeff’s growing pains and try to draw the Beatles analogy here: For every Abbey Road there’s a Please Plese Me; for every Anodyne there’s a Still Feel Gone. Sorry, SG. And that UT covering Dino thing is definately a new one on me. Weird.
Personally, I think Wilco’s YHF is one of the top 25 or so albums of all time. The albums’ underlying theme and content (communication and it’s inherent flaws) combined with the conditions under which it was released is of Abbey Road proportions. Brilliant, just brilliant. And not a single wasted note. Incredible….And again, just my opinion, don’t flame me too bad.
May 2, 2006 at 4:58 pm #116813Anodyne is just fine with me and sure it`s more developed for them as songwriters and it`s a cleaner production but sometimes I like to hear a band in their raw early stages.Still Feel Gone captures them in that. It`s almost a concept album about living in a small midwestern town and where your life is going.I always have a penchant for messiness though SFG is`nt that messy compared to Anodyne it is.Sure I like cleaner and less cluterred sounds too but not always.Last night I was listening to Jawbreaker`s Dear You.That`s alot more slick sounding then previous records but blazes thru quite nicely.Yes UT has covered Dino.Tweedy has listed Bug as one of his fave records.
Oh yeah later Beatles stuff is better than early stuff but that opinion can vary.May 3, 2006 at 7:24 am #116814I like Uncle Tupelo a lot. I’m a bigger Wilco fan but I don’t necessarily think of Wilco as being "better" just different. UT was more focused on blue collar, working class songs and I think Wilco and Son Volt have other focuses.
My favorite Uncle Tupelo song is New Madrid but I like most of what they did.

"Better" is a relative term so, I try to stay away from "Band ‘x’ is better then Band ‘y’" arguements, just no way to argue fact, it’s all opinion as evidenced by SG’s post: He likes SFG, I think it kinda stinks. What’s cool to one person may not be to another, I respect that. And I can definately see where UT fans would have a hard time digesting Wilco, especially anything after Being There. A completely different sound, indeed. I just prefer the Wilco sound to UT’s and Jeff’s voice to Jay’s. That’s just me.

I still can’t got off this Dino/UT connection thing, though. I’m gonna scream out "Play Chunks!" at the next Wilco show I go to. Jeff Tweedy doing No Bones….funny.

Ever see Jeff`s favorite albums list?I came across a book with it listed.Dino was in there as I mentioned as was Husker Du,Minutemen,Neutral Milk Hotel, and Buck Owens. There should be a web site that has info like that somewhere.
May 3, 2006 at 3:59 pm #116817I’ve never heard Uncle Tupelo or Son Volt, but I don’t like Wilco so I’ve never really been motivated to check them out.
May 3, 2006 at 7:16 pm #116818I saw Uncle Tupelo back in 92 opening for Teenage Fanclub. No Dino cover, but I recall them doing I Wanna be your Dog. I always liked Farrar’s songs more than Tweedy’s – maybe that’s why I like Son Volt and not Wilco.
I’m not even going to comment on the Beatles remarks

I saw Uncle Tupelo open for the Replacements around ’90, I think. They were ok, but overall they sounded to me kind of like an uninspired Soul Asylum (this was pre-Grave Dancers Union, remember), and it always pisses off UT fans when I tell them that.
May 5, 2006 at 2:16 pm #116821I remeber UT but was never really into them. The only song I remember from them I think was called I got Drunk and I fell Down, or something like that. I remember hearing about them around the same time I found out about Buffalo Tom. Those guys were good!
I guess I didn’t really add anything to your conversation, … sorry
