My .o2.
My dad and I were talking about Mp3 downloading the other day. The upshot to it is that while musicians are losing money out of it, ANYTHING is getting released. Combine this with increasingly better and more affordable home studios, and you have good art. In short, This is terrible for business, but great for art. No longer will people have to make their work "comercially accessable " It’ll be out there for people to find if they want. And boy bands will be nonexistant.
March 25, 2002 at 11:16 am #68651Jaron reducing the above far reaching bill to an arguement about mp3’s just seems silly…no matter who caused this type of legislation to come up.
Oh yeah, did you manage to d/l those GBV songs you were looking for

If people want to preview music, that’s what real audio is for!

March 25, 2002 at 5:36 pm #68655Nope, not buying it But I still am buying loads of cd’s, altho they are not as cheap as you stated , the music I like can’t be found at walmart in the cheap bins…except of course the rasberries best of I got for five bucks:p I pay upwards of 35 bucks for some imports, online it can be more with shipping, duty & tax. I think a lot of us here always want the hard copy in our hands if at all possible. BLAH to this arguement

March 25, 2002 at 5:51 pm #68656GBV.com has those horrible mp3’s too, Jaron. Quite a few in fact… Nice, legal, horrible mp3’s.
March 25, 2002 at 5:57 pm #68657I`m still buying alot of cd`s too,and like Allison said they`re not cheap,I paid close to $60 for the 2 cd`s I bought the other day
March 25, 2002 at 6:07 pm #68658Even after I started bootlegging, I never stopped buying cd’s. But oddly enough, most of the Dinosaur jr Cd’s, and other cd’s, I bought I got used for $7.99
March 25, 2002 at 6:13 pm #68659I did the used cd thing for a long time, got some cool stuff but alot of junk as well, used cd`s here cost as much as $14.
March 25, 2002 at 6:26 pm #68660Yeah, they do Matt. In fact, because they do, I think that somehow proves your point… oh, wait, it doesn’t.
Have something relative to say?
March 25, 2002 at 6:34 pm #68661My point, Jaron, is that, from what I can tell, you’re trying to bastardize a form of technology, because some people mis-use it.
Some people use cars as getaway vehicles from bank-robberies. Shall we outlaw cars, as well?
What about knives, sure they’re useful for cutting food, as well as a whole lot of other uses. But some people use them to kill. Maybe we should get rid of them too…

March 25, 2002 at 7:00 pm #68662ya know, the record companies are breaking all time highs in sales. This shows that not all people are waiving a finger in the air at the labels. I fully show my support and purchase albums of many artists. In most cases I have already downloaded mp3’s from these albums but purchase the album to help support them. Also helps me keep from waisting money on crap.
True there are some ‘rotten apples’ but it is definatly not sending the labels to skid row. In fact, many are using them to their advantage!
To rip the whole format is wrong. Many bands are getting their music heard by people that would have never known they existed.
that is all I have for now – back to the muscle relaxers!
March 25, 2002 at 7:51 pm #68663Courtney Love is quite nutty, but I’m beginning to like her idea of forming a musicians’ union.
I personally would not say that I feel MY rights are at risk, but I do contemplate the rights of the artists regarding this new software proposal. If this law went into effect, record companies would have to set an ultimatum for artists: "Sign with us and surrender your artistic rights, or don’t sign with us and see how far your career goes." But if there were some kind of union (optional membership, of course), it might be heavy enough to balance out this corporate threat.
Just thought I’d throw that out there; I know it’s a little bit random.

p.s. does anyone know if ALL record companies are part of the RIAA?
p.p.s. and how is it that record labels can claim copyrights to songs that are copyrighted to their respective authors?
