wav to mp3 converter?

Hey, I am in the process of converting tapes to wav to mp3, lots of Dino for uploading, but I kind of need some help. The program Im using to convert the tape to wav kicks ass, but when it converts wav to mp3 the file/track info comes out wrong- the track length, bitrate, etc. mp3 sounds good, but if the filename got screwed up, it would be a pain figuring what show & stuff you were listening to…heres a link to the site, I recommend it…

SO… do any of you know of a good freeware/shareware prog to do the wav to mp3 converting? Not too technical… pretty much a newbie…

Also, any good programs for converting VHS to digital? I think it would be pretty easy, just hook up VCR to camcorder to computer, but any suggestions for software? hopefully free, of course, if Im going to pay for stuff like this, Im probably going to go with the pro stuff…

If you go to http://www.etree.org/”>http://www.etree.org/ you’ll find good programs that will convert wav’s into almost anything. I’d recommend mkwACT for that job. If space is the issue for your want/need to convert the wav’s into mp3, I’d rather convert them into shn’s if I were you, then download a shn plug-in for winamp(also found at http://www.etree.org/”>http://www.etree.org/,) this will make the files smaller, but not change the audio quality. This is recommended if you wanna share the files on the web, the files are smaller than wav’s, but they have the same quality, thus the downloader will get a exact copy of the original. And you will also get the benefit of great quality if you are using your pc along with speakers.

As for digitalizing VHS, I use FinalCutPro on mac’s and Adobe Indesign for pc, they have a pretty selfexplanatory way of recording from VHS to your puter. However, these programs are not freeware and cost a pretty penny, so I guess it comes down to either your money situation or your wievs on downloading software from for example DC++. I haven’t tried any freeware programs for this operation, but I’ll ask some mates who are tech-heads if they got any suggestions for you.

Yeah, I havent given much thought to shn’s, I guess that would be a pretty good option. The reason I kind of put them aside was because the main reason I was doing it was to upload the shows to Freesofree.net, and the thought of uploading anything but mp3’s on a dial-up connection gives me the willies. It’d take MONTHS! But yeah, the shn idea IS a good one. Thanks for the links, and if you hear about anything for video, give me a shout, please, got some dino concerts, too.

Agree, uploading shn’s on such a connection is not a pleasant thought. In that case, mp3 for uploading and shn’s for computer storage/your pleasure is probably the best option.
What’s your o.s.? If you’re on xp, there should be a sorta moviemaker program which to my knowledge will allow you to capture VHS.

fOR REAL??? any ideas on where? theres a scanner/digital photo wizard, but I dont see one for video… I thought I read something about that somewhere else, but wasnt paying attention at the time.. Ill look around, can you ask anyone, please….

it says dont have a video device. it has sound max digital audio for audio, what do I need to get for digital? Thanks for the help.

Do you have, or know anyone who has a dvcamera(or minidv)? If so, vhs-dv-computer would be the easiest thing. In other words, copy the vhs to dv, so the dv sort of functions as a dac, use firewire or usb to get it on the puter.
