the Let it Ride solo sounds like an acid trip.
May 23, 2006 at 11:03 pm #115883Uhhhh….Murph was a cigarette smoker….but I’m sure we all knew that.
That has nothing to do with drugs, but I don’t think it really matters much….I doubt that they were BIG into drugs. They were naturally creative if you ask me.
May 23, 2006 at 11:05 pm #115884i smoked weed with mike johnson backstage at the agora in cleveland in maybe ’97 or 96.

I know J has gotten high and drank in the past. Not so sure now. I saw him nursing a beer in Boston at their shows in December of ’05. Other than that I don’t know. I have heard some rumors that J had a booze problem. I guess that would explain the larg belly and skinny legs. I mean look at the man for Christ’s sake! He’s gained a lot of weight and he looks like shit. J’s gotta get his shit together or he’ll have a heart attack in the middle of a show.J said in an interview that he drank a lot in the mid-90s after his dad died, but he doesn’t seem like a boozer to me. And I know boozers. Now Murph…..he’s a boozer.

Look at the man’s name: "J"
Of course he’s a stoner.
I have personally offered J weed twice and he has declined, and I’ve seen his friends offer it to him and he declined. I think he probably has smoked but isnt a stoner by any means and he used to drink whiskey when he was playing but now I only ever see water.

is j nice in person
I’ve always wondered that. he kinda seems itJune 24, 2006 at 12:00 pm #115888He’s not really anything in person, he’s like a mythotic god that doesn’t want to be bothered. I just met him again last month at the witch show, this time he creeped me out. It’s not like he’s rude, he just doesn’t know how to be social it seems.
June 24, 2006 at 1:26 pm #115889Both reunion shows I went to I found myself in very close proximity of Mr. Mascis… but like you said , there’s something about the guy that intimidates the shit out of you… so I just left him alone.
June 24, 2006 at 10:11 pm #115890Well, it’s good that J doesn’t abuse drugs. Way too many great musicians go down that path. And they almost always end up dead. J is a lot like Jimi Hendrix (musically) and I’d hate for them to share that final step of overdosing and dying. I think that would just be toom much for me to handle.
But seriously, J should do some sit ups or jumping jacks or something. That large gut can’t be healthy.
July 5, 2006 at 1:36 pm #115891here’s J’s bit on substance use…
Quote:would it be fair to say that you?re not much of a hellraiser?that stuf is fun to watch and hear about. i?m not exactly that kind of guy, but i like to see people who are. i don?t feel as though i?ve taken advantage of being in a band the same way that some people might have. y?know, some people are cut out for doing loads of chicks and being a junkie. i?m not a big vice person. yeah, i had a brief phase of heavy drinking durin the mid-1990s, but that was about it. and i could still play during that time. if i could still stand, i could still play. the guitar is pretty easy to play in any state!
July 5, 2006 at 2:17 pm #115892Years ago, I remember reading an interview in a guitar magazine with J and Kevin Shields. The interviewer described J as something like "Cranky, stoned on pot, eating a Domino’s pizza from the box positioned on his chest so as to minimize the distance between the box and his mouth".
This hardly means big into drugs but I just found the image amusing. By the way, I just love the title of that other thread here. Y’know the one?
]"Wait, J was arrested for d,d,d,drugs?"[/b] or something.
Hilarious.

I love the guy but watching him move across the stage does conger up images of a sloth.
July 5, 2006 at 7:54 pm #115894That interview is the one with Kevin Shields…
Theres a great quote from J in a recent Globe & Mail article…
Quote:"I don’t answer people fast enough all the time," he explains when asked about his reputation for being shy, even reclusive. "So the press starts putting a lot of spins on it."
July 5, 2006 at 10:09 pm #115895J’s very good at not testifying against himself
July 7, 2006 at 4:08 pm #115896my younger brother reminds me very much of j … not that he has any guitar skills or anything like that
but he’s very quiet – to the point of being unnerving for some people … my family’s had endless discussions about his mental state + happiness + i’m like, ‘hey let’s just accept he’s a quiet guy’ …

however, saying that — if you get him talking on certain subjects that are of interest to him he can rattle on … so i guess there’s a little more to it than him being a quiet guy … i guess you’d say he’s selectively quiet …
