It’s been fun getting to know a lot of you. Its always fun for me to find out what people do careerwise. For those who don’t know I am a power designer/engineer. I engineer and draft how the power company gets power to new housing developments. I also design/engineer natural gas distribution.
So if you don’t mind me asking what is it that you do?
January 26, 2007 at 11:28 am #125395I’m a Systems Administrator/Network Administrator for a Cold Storage Door Company.
They make gigantic cold storage doors, and I make sure the computer network works, and the users are kept clueless.January 26, 2007 at 11:42 am #125396school

January 26, 2007 at 1:48 pm #125398Up until recently I believed I was a communication facilitator with the Athens Clarke County Police Department. Now I’m not so sure….

Although I have said it before, Tony will be happy to hear me say it again……..I don’t arrest folks,
I may talk to them soon afterwards but I don’t arrest anyone.I’m secretly working on finding another job.
and last but not least, I hope none of you ever finds yourself on the other side of the law but if you do
when they tell you "You have the right to remain silent…………….just do that, for pete’s sake just shut-up.
because along with that goes "anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.IT doesn’t say can be used against you it says can and WILL ………for crying out loud.
The police will tell you….lets go down to the station and get this thing worked out…..as if you are going to be friends in a few hours……..as if you are going to be going out for appetizers and drinks with them after this whole mess gets straightened out……….
and you feel………I don’t want to remain silent and ask for a lawyer…that might make me look guilty…..HEll you already look guilty or they wouldn’t be asking you to come down to the station.
Keeping quiet makes you look intelligent and often keeps you out of jail.
Gosh, I’m frustrated today. I hope I gave good advice but I’m sure most of you already knew this.
January 26, 2007 at 2:04 pm #125399Cool, for some reason I thought you did something in relation to a 911 operator. Apparently you’re deaper than that. Definately cool stuff, and uh good advice.
January 26, 2007 at 2:09 pm #125400I’m finishing a PhD in 18th-century British and American literature and culture, and am currently looking for visiting assistant professor positions while I ready my materials for the tenure-track job market next year (I struck out this year, so far as I can tell [the process can drag on forever]). Between researching for and writing the dissertation, preparing articles for publication in journals, and sending out application packets for postdocs and visiting positions, I listen to music, cook, drink, and get high. Sometimes I do all of the last four at the same time…..like I will in a couple hours.

I worked very closely with the 911 center because I speak Spanish. Like most of the country our 911 center is dangerously understaffed which means that everybody gets to answer the phones. I want to put together a best of Stefka 911 disk. I really hope to do that for my children some day.
We have chronic or repeat callers. One elderly black fellow is like my buddy and when I was there I always got passed his calls…………..he is fond of the "ladies of the night" but he always goes for the $10 dollar ones and wakes up the next day with something missing out of his house.
He likes music and we always talk about music together but my favorite thing about him is he always starts the conversation with "Well, you aren’t gonna believe this but it happened again" and they always taking things like, I don’t know, his electric can opener, or his bbq grill………I think his tv and vcr are long gone.
The first time I spoke with him he asked me "what kind of music do you like to listen to.?" I told him I like Dinosaur Jr and he said "that sounds like something a kid would order from a restaurant or something"
Gosh, I’ve got to get a copy of that… I have also had folks calling with the person next to them in the middle of dying………Oh, the screaming and freaking out that goes on while I try to calm them down.Everything I could go on and on…………I tell ya’ll someday about the guy that fell on a butcher knife while he was drunk and he called from a cell phone without GPS and he was dying but he had no idea where he was because he was from North Carolina and had come to town just that day with another friend (so he was in the house of a friend of a friend) and everyone in the house had gone out on the town but they left him at home because he was passed out but he woke up and fell on a knife, he had no idea of the name of the street, what part of town he was in, no landmarks that were near, he had never been to Athens before………we tried to get him to locate some mail inside the house but he couldn’t walk……..we kept trying to get him to try and save his life by dragging his self to find mail or to a neighbors but the knife had entered his body in such a way that every time he tried to move he screamed in pain and was yelling "God help me I’m bleeding to death." it was brilliant thinking on the part of a supervisor that saved his life……….we found him and got him to the hospital……………..to be continued………….I have to drive to a girl scout meeting….cookies are coming soon.

I know BetteDavisLies is working on her PhD, isn’t Severed Lips as well?
And to think I’m super stoked just to be finishing my Bachelors Degree in a few months.
January 27, 2007 at 5:53 am #125403I build custom augmentative speech devices for people with disabilities. They are essentially tablet-PCs that speak for people who are non-verbal (usually due to ALS, Autism, brain injury, etc.). They also have a variety of interfaces for people with physical limitations, and can bet set-up for environmental controls (for instance, tuning on/off lights, answering the phone, controlling the TV, etc.).
Before this, I worked building and programming large-scale automation for production lines in the automotive industry.

The crazy thing is that King Tubby’s colleague from his university just started as a professor at my university. Who knew the Freakscene board could have so many short degrees of separation??

I am going crazy………and have decided to throw myself back into being a poor artist. I’m scared but I have to do this………I tried to go the regular job route and it is actually driving me crazy. I feel so restricted, so confined… So pray for me…it’s going to be an adventure. -
