if you were in a band (or are)…
i’d go for:
erica’s word–game theory
rolling moon–the chills
oblivious–galaxie 500
no love lost–joy division
oh no–the only ones
beatnik–the clean
silly girl–television personalites
queen of eyes–the soft boys
don’t think twice, it’s alright–b. dylan (but i’d make it rock)
January 23, 2002 at 4:45 pm #67668Cool topic BR

January 23, 2002 at 7:53 pm #67669That’s a difficult one. I’ve been in a coverband for a while and I enjoyed it to do Beatles covers. I loved to do "She loves you" realy, realy slow. It brought me to tears some times!
To cover Sedan delivery properly?? I would’nt burn my hands to it.
Nice thread though…I’ll think about it!
January 27, 2002 at 2:59 am #67670Some of my favorites to play/sing–
Dinosaur Jr, "Can’t We Move This". I play it acoustically and really slow. I also capo it up about 7 or 8 frets or something, so I can do it in kinda a medium range…talk about a song that makes me cry when I sing it…One of my best recordings of myself is this cover. I was getting over a cold, but somehow it came out just right.
Reverend Horton Heat, "Unlucky in Love". This is kind of an uptempo rockabilly song; again, I slow it down, and it comes out completely different, almost haunting. The words are just so raw…"my first love left me all alone/ my second love cut me to the bone/ my third, fourth and fifth, lord, tell me up above/ why am I unlucky in love"
Fiona Apple, "A Mistake". One of the best for me; not only is it a fantastic and kickass song, but her range is really close to mine, so I can sing it strongly & comfortably. Took me forever to figure out on guitar, but well worth the effort.
Usher, "My Way". Dude. Yes, the teenybopper r&b guy. Such great lyrics, 4 chords, right on. Ditto for my "Baby One More Time" cover, which, by the way, can be seamlessly integrated with "Genie in a Bottle".
Songs I would love to learn–
Grant Lee Buffalo, "Lone Star Song"; Culture Club, "Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me; Marilyn Manson, "Great Big White World"; Madonna, "Secret".

rosaJanuary 27, 2002 at 6:48 am #67671There are at least a million songs that I’ve wanted to cover at some point or another. So much, that I have to remind myself that I don’t like coverbands…
Anyway, one song that I’d love to cover, if I could pull it off, is Sonic Youth’s ‘Diamond Sea’. At 20 mins long, it be one hell of an undertaking.
Though, knowing me, I’d shorten it to 3 mins, and have 2 and a half of those minutes as one long solo…

January 27, 2002 at 8:29 am #67672Can’t play, can’t sing, so maybe I CAN give some System of a Down or Britney Spears songs the fate they deserve…..

* Nirvana – Something In The Way
* J Mascis & The Fog – Lets Go 2 Church
* Smashing Pumpkins – XYU
* Motorpsycho – Mountain
* Palace Brothers – The Spider’s Dude Is Often ThereJanuary 27, 2002 at 10:53 pm #67674SG, ‘tom courtenay’ is probably the YLT song i’d pick too–either that or ‘alyda’.
deepsludge- that ‘silly girl’ is original, off the TvP’s album ‘and don’t the kids just love it’. the chorus goes:
silly girl
wasn’t you a silly girl
silly girl
what have you done now?interesting that those who play stuff only mention things they can play, which i guess makes sense, but i can’t play crap and definitely can’t sing, so mine is all ‘if’.
January 28, 2002 at 9:10 am #67675Motorpsycho -Sister Confusion
Spaceboy, if you, or anyone else, is interested I could upload some live motorpsycho to one of the ftps -I’ve got some nice boots

January 29, 2002 at 11:34 am #67679I’ve been thinking about this for a wee while and plan to do a different cover each show. Start the show with ‘Walk Don’t Run’ by The Ventures and then half way through, a cover from the list…
Puretone – Addicted To Bass (a drum ‘n’ bass tune which works quite well with my drum machine, live drums and a dirty bass sound)
Say Yes – Elliot Smith (rocked out version)
Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground – Willie Nelson (rocked out version)
Me And Bobby McGee – Kris Kristofferson (rocked out version)
Lonesome Johnny Blues – CrackerAlso I claim to have done a rocky version of Jolene before the White Stripes made it cool…
January 29, 2002 at 12:33 pm #67680petesome, if you can find it, check out a rock version of ‘jolene’ by this kiwi guy named darcy clay. he did it back in ’96, before the white stripes were even a band…and he does it better. its a damn shame he killed himself because the guy had talent, and i don’t just mean his covers.
January 30, 2002 at 7:39 am #67681Self Esteem -acoustic n slow, or maybe something with an accordian and slide guitar.
