I`ll never understand why someone would go to a concert to hear one song or just ‘the hits’ ??? When I was a kid my sister would just cue up the singles on an album.Just the songs that had videos we seen and never listen to the other songs.I skipped that habit when I started collecting my own music.

Yeah I totally agree. A lot of the time for me the singles aren’t the best song on the album. Like Without a Sound. Obviously the big hit was Feel the Pain, but my personal favorite is Over Your Shoulder. Which I think is one of the best songs J has ever written. Its crazy to me how much people miss out when they don’t give an entire album a chance, or read liner notes for that matter. :-

Drives me nuts as well… :P

Agree with the sheep deal King Tubby, it’s like they need to be spoon fed the next hit…they couldn’t possibly decide what they prefer all on their own… ::)

My fave on HIO is Can’t We Move This…my suggestion is just keep listening to it, you’ll appreciate it more each time!

late edit…or maybe you need to watch some songs done live, Bizarre Fest up on freesofree.net has a couple great videos of songs off HIO, all messy, distorted & very very cool…

Without A Sound has a couple really great tracks.

and on Mind Glow J does a acoustic solo, not many people can pull that off.

I actually didn’t buy Without a Sound until after I got Hand it Over…i guess after hearing Feel the Pain played to death on the radio i couldn’t bring myself to buy it – and its still my least played Mascis album even though it has some really good songs…i guess it was just a weird time for me…or something

I think HiO has really great songs and some catchy hooks as well. If the production was done more high tech (radiofriendly), I think it would have pleased far more ears and people would discover that I’m insane, i don’t think , never bought it, nothing’s goin on are very catchy songs.

nice to see people discussing Without a Sound. it has been, and always will be, my favourite Dinosaur record.

as for Hand It Over, i find that i go through phases with it. i can go for months without hearing it, but when i do, my appreciation for the experimentation on there increases with each listen. with that said, i skip about half the album. that’s rare for me…i usually like to listen to albums all the way through, but i find that one a bit hard to take most of the time.

here’s how i usually listen to Hand It Over: I Don’t Think, Never Bought It, Nothin’s Really Goin’ On, I’m Insane (i freak out for the breakdown/chorus in that one), Alone (when i’m feeling alone), Mick, I Know Yer Insane (probably my favourite track on there), Gettin’ Rough (because banjo kicks ass), and Gotta Know (my second favourite track). the others are good, but i’m rarely in the mood to hear them.

albums like Hand It Over will be appraised and reappraised for time immemorial because there’s a lot to digest, and compared to the rest of the catalogue, it’s a bit weak.

but there is plenty o’ gold there for people who like good songs and unconventional (for Dinosaur) instrumentation. i find i rarely feel the same way twice after listening to Hand It Over. that makes it an A-one boss album for me…usually.

I’m glad to hear some props for WAS. I always found it as a mellower album, and very strong lyrically. It sort found a niche with me.

I never can rank DJr albums. They are all close, and any given day I have a different favorite.

Hand It Over just isn’t that great of a record. I love Dinosaur Jr, but that record just wasn’t up to snuff. That’s why I largely ignore their bad material (and thank God there’s very little of it) and just focus on the 95% of their great material.
