This past monday, I went to pick up my friend/guitarist Mike Sullivan from Oklahoma. My wife and I went, thinking it would be a two day trip…wrongo! We got to Knoxville TN, and then got pulled over and was handed a speeding ticket (if you knew the whole story here, you would know how incredibly BAD this is for us…..jail time bad). The rest of the trip there was fine, nothing bad went on…untill the next day, when a little over 100 miles towards home, the timing belt tension pulley fell apart, sending ball bearings flying around gears and junk, (at about 60 or 65mph on the interstate). This being a 1989 Geo Spectrum 5-speed with an Izuzu (sp) 1.5 liter side mounted friggen non-tolerant engine, the valves ended up bending when the engine died. We were lucky to have a guy come along, who lived about a mile down the road and also happened to be a mechanic who let us stay at his house until yesterday (Friday) and let us eat his food. We satyed extra days and then thought….oh no!!! we only fed our animals for 1-2 days max. Theyre out of water, and no food by now….ehh! My wife had to call in to work like 2 or 3 days in a row, but lucky for us Pizza Hut is nice to her and she still has her job. The last thing we needed to happen, then happend. I called my mom to tell her that we were ok and where we were etc. and she said she had gone to our apartment to see if we made it back or not, and her car had died in the street in front, but anyways…she got to the door and saw a note. After pulling the note out she read that we are now $720 behind in rent and have to have at least $360 by wednsday to even atempt to keep from eviction. This woulndt be that bad if I had a job, but I dont. Also, my wife has to change her license over to TN from CA before april whatever when she has to appear in court, to prove she has a valid license and insurance (which we also do not have). So we have to get insurance on a car we dont even have anymore, and hope they dont run the tags, because they belong on my old car, not the spectrum. The term "We’re Screwed" has been penned this week. Then to come here and read about Bob…living is no fun, and lately I dont want to do it anymore. I know Im revealing a lot to everyone who surfs by, but, I have to vent…I dont have a band anymore, so this is all Ive got. I honestly got to the point that, walking into the path of a semi looked sssooooo good. Money I think, is the root of evil as they say…you need money like I do, so you play the lottery, (hypathetically) and win 10 million dollars. You get excited and blow 7 million of it right off, then realize that you owe 4.5 million in taxes….so you go from owing over a thousand, to over a million. Money is dumb! I hate it! the more i get, the less i like it. All I want to do in my short little life is to not worry every day and be a musician and just do what I love doing….sending songs to people through cd, or whatever. Now im being threatend by an apartment owner/lawyer….locking the doors and selling whatever it takes to get his money that he is owed. The first thing people go for is the music gear you know….and you know that would kill me. I knew life was tough, but I had no clue. I have to get a job, a bunch of money, and sanity…VERY soon or im going to lose it all. Enough sappy blues for now…R.J.

I keep my fingers crossed that things will get better for you soon!March 14, 2004 at 10:40 am #100731life is a bitch
hope u get out of this shitMarch 14, 2004 at 11:52 am #100732Hello Randy Jane, sorry to hear about this…
If you’d like some advice… here we go…
First thing I would do is try to get an arrangement with the landlord. Pay your rent regularly, with extra small amounts (if you can) every month. If he’s an asshole–do a midnight move. If you can move back temporarily to your moms to pay off this mess, then do it. Second, bring your gear to anybody’s house who you can trust–they can’t take away stuff you don’t have. Third, I think repo is only aloud to take a minimum of stuff and leave the basics. Fourth, if the car is totaled, tell them it was your old car. And finally, don’t give up hope. If you love music, then make it your life. Tell them you are out of work and that you are looking for work–and that your wife has a minimum wage job. If not, go fight it in the courts and tell them you have no money–if that doesn’t work, go tell your governor, or whoever, that poor people have rights–even though they are poor.
…Think that you CAN and WILL get out of it. Don’t let anything get you down. Be positive.Peace,
LTGMarch 14, 2004 at 2:55 pm #100733Hey RJ,
Definitely sounds like a tough situation, sucks in a huge way

I think breaking the situation down into small do-able bits like LTG suggested is a great idea. Hope those suggestions work out for you guys.
Good luck with the job hunt, definitely good news that Pizza Hut is cool with your wife, no doubt the tips help out daily for expenses…pet food, guitar strings etc.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you guys, try to stay positive, things can change for the positive given some time.
Take care
March 14, 2004 at 7:57 pm #100734dude. . . .that really sucks.
March 15, 2004 at 7:51 am #100735Best of luck RJ
March 15, 2004 at 9:44 am #100736Yeah this is Michael Sullivan i was the one that Eric Shupe and his wife came to get. felt bad for having them come to get me cause they lost they’re only way of transportation to and from work. But at least everything turned out alright hopefully we can get the car fixed and all but with most of the parts on the spectrum not being made anymore gunna be hard to find them. *crosses fingers* out for now…
March 15, 2004 at 11:47 am #100737Friggin…..I’m just going to have to stop worrying about things I guess. Heidi called her grandma yesterday and she is sending a bunch of money. Not enough to cover everything, but it will pretty much wrap up the rent with what we have already came up with. All we have to worry about now is the car situation/insurance, registeration, getting her ticket paid off and then getting the license switched…and finally, the repairs. Seems like a lot to look at all at once, but I guess when you get some help and encouragement from friends, you know its going to be alright, and thats all I needed.
To Mike, its no ones fault, these things cant be forseen…its just a car afterall…we can get another one or fix that one.
Anyone in the OK area from FS? Maybe you could help a little if you want, by like….well, I dont know really. Im not asking for money or parts or anything like that..but, you know.
Does anyone know the laws for this car stuff? Whats going to happen when Heidi pays off her ticket? She has a bench warrant, but I dont really know much about laws and we try to avoid cops at all costs…unless theyre our friends of course. The ticket came from CA so I dont know what the laws there are anyways. When we go to get insureance, wont there be a date of when it was (applied ?) ? The ticket has a date on it so if the ticket is older than the insureance, they would prolly figure that out right? The license we might be able to pull off by saying it had to be renewed…which by April 8 2004 it does, so that wont be a lie, plus it still has her old name, yadda yadda.
OK, I just want to wrap up by thanking everyone, I needed kind words from caring people. Now that Mike is back, expect some great music coming from R.J. and the Essex Valentine. Ok, than you again, we love you all – Randy Jane. -
