You’ve got too many cd’s, vinyls etc. You’ve heard about every great song ever written. You know every great band down to the last obscure outtake that was featured on a mongolian reprint of a subpop promo?
In other words, please pitch me some bands that are great, spectacular, wonderfull and all the good things rolled into one lovely cake of audio goodie. Because I really don’t know where to take it from here
March 12, 2004 at 3:57 pm #100696hmmm … that’s a toughie … depends on what kind of music are you after …
loud ? quiet ? or
March 12, 2004 at 4:06 pm #100697I am after great music. So loud or quiet is not the issue

I’m open to all suggestions!
March 12, 2004 at 6:30 pm #100698You might find some suggestions for your listening pleasure and further investigation in this topic
March 12, 2004 at 6:48 pm #100699Sandy Denny;J`s fave singer who died too young.even if you don`t like her at first she grows on you. She`s usually categorized as folk or folk rock but she covered old celtic tunes to Chuck Berry and Bob Dylan. She`s also my current avatar
you can find some mp3`s on SS or the box set Who Knows Where The Time Goes box set is essential,or the No More Sad Refrains double comp or the album Sandy is her best album.
She also sang with Fairport Convention on the albums What We Did On Our Holidays,Unhalfbricking,Liege And Lief, and Rising For The Moon.March 13, 2004 at 6:15 am #100700I’m very much into the Gun Club, no other band ever merged Blues and C&W roots in that grand & authentic way with true, raw punk rock, great tunes & passion.
ok. it’s old stuff (80s/90s) and you might have heard of them already because they were much more popular over here than in their home country USA. but if not I’d recommend them warmly. Best start would be the albums Fire Of Love or Miami.March 13, 2004 at 6:46 am #100701buckmeister, big thanks for the link! I’ve completely missed that thread, so I’ll have to check that out +pluss think up a list of my own.
Salami, I’ve heard of Sandy Denny, but to my knowledge I’ve never heard anything by her. Will definetely check her out on ss, and look for the suggested albums!
FC, never heard of the Gun Club, is charlton heston playing in it? But a mix of blues, country and raw punk rock, great tunes & passion can’t anything else than good
Your description sounds a bit like Hank Williams III, so looking forward to hearing it!March 13, 2004 at 8:03 am #100702I forgot to mention that Sandy Denny sang with Led Zeppelin on the song Battle Of Everymore from their 4th album and she had a role in The Who`s Tommy. Also, she was in a band called Fotheringay after leaving Fairport Convention and before her solo albums, they only recorded one album.
The Gun Club is something I`ve been wanting to get into but have yet to find any of their albums.I first heard about them when a local band called Coyote recorded their song Sex Beat. The guy from 16 Horsepower is a big fan of them.March 13, 2004 at 1:33 pm #100703Fully agree on the Gun Club, ‘Fire of Love’ is the record to start with IMHO. SG mentioned 16 Horsepower (they cover Gun Club’s ‘Fire Spirit’), they are also definitely worth a listen (if you don’t know them already….
)March 13, 2004 at 6:21 pm #100704I love 16 horsepower, sackcloth n ashes are brilliant, as well as most of their albums.
March 14, 2004 at 11:12 am #100705I recently bought a German fanzine called "Roadtracks". I actually bought it because it has an interview with J from fall 2002, but I thought it was fascinating, because it’s full of devoted articles about bands & artists I never ever heard of.
their main focus is alternative country and "on the road" music.
they have articles about:
Stateside
Kevin Russell
Virgil Shaw
Gram Parsons (ok I’ve heard the name before)
Swearing at Motorists
Alejandro Escovedo
Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter
Bobby Bare Jr
Rusty Miller
Jesse Malin
Buddy Miller
Onlinedrawing
Red Star Belgrade
Tess Wiley
Kristofer Aström & Hidden Truck
Fred Eaglesmith
Steve WynnI’m sure SG and you other guys might have heard of the one or other of them, but I found it weird that I never heard of them although the articles all sound like I could like them, I decided to d/l some stuff of the one or other of them.
March 14, 2004 at 2:35 pm #100706Hey FC, looks like a cool magazine, Steve Wynn is definitely worth checking, he used to be in the Dream Syndicate (late 80’s), he made some fine solo albums, I have seen him live a couple of times, alway great rocking shows, not exactly ‘alternative country’
… (and he is a nice guy as well, who loves to have a couple of beers with his fans
)Other stuff worth checking: Alejandro Escovedo, Red Star Belgrade & Jesse Malin
March 14, 2004 at 8:06 pm #100707I’ll take a moment to shamlessly promote semi-local act The Grand Ulena (http://www.Grandulena.com). Crazy instrumenal power trio, bassist (and personal acquiantence) Darin Grey has a nice resume’ including: Bobby Conn, Alan Licht, Jim O’Rourke, K.K. Null, Dan Burke, Cheer Accident, Bunnygrunt, Ikue Mori, Tim Barnes, Ken Vandermark, Early Day Miners,
Will Oldham, Michael Colligan, Kevin Drumm, Gene Coleman, Jeb Bishop, Toshi Makahara, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Glenn Kotche, Weasel Walter, and countless others.
Guitarist Chris Tull and drummer Danny McLain round out the group. I have seen them live twice and enjoyed it. They’re also signed up for SXSW this year, so if you can find them, take the advantage to see the live show.March 25, 2004 at 3:19 pm #100708another bunch of names are dropped in this article. names of bands where the description of their music sounds cool but which I haven’t heard of before:
Quote:Gone are the days of artists like Iggy & The Stooges who had to wait twenty years for a decent payday because they were ahead of their time. Now the artist is taking back control from the fat-cat music business pariahs and the fickle, average, bigoted public. It’s about time. So take a stroll through the new breed and see some of the prototypes of the future.Quote:MTV is the way it is now because relevant artists don’t need it anymore. Don’t go there looking for anything important or influential anymore. Instead get on the World Wide Web. It is the new MTV.March 25, 2004 at 6:15 pm #100709I`ve heard Robin Black and the Toilet Boys and all I can say is…
STAY AWAY!!
