Tony`s quoting Cole Porter,that`s cool.

Back in 93,J was what I listened to the most,in time I got into other bands but still always came back to J`s music,it deffinitely sticks to you and stays in your head.

I have`nt heard Dean Martin`s or Tony Bennett`s version,I`m familar with Dinah Washington `s version the most,Sinatra does a cool version too.

Kept meaning to reply to this thread, guess I’ll get around to it now.

The first time I ever noticed the existence of Dinosaur Jr, was not in song… In the 8th grade, a friend of mine had a lalapalooza shirt with all of the performers listed on the back in one massive run-on sentence. For some reason Dinosaur Jr always stuck out to me… I thought it was a very weird name for a band.

So, around this same time, we had a radio station that had an "alternative" show at 10pm Sunday nights. Well, 10pm was my bedtime back then, by decree of my parents, so I’d secretly stay up listening to it on my radio, while in bed.

That radio show is where I first heard "Start Chopping", which I payed special attention to because of my friend’s T-shirt… Needless to say, it absolutely blew me away!!!

I was exposed to a few of the other bands that I like today by that show. The Pixies, Bob Mould, etc.

This was right before the whole Nirvana-grunge explosion, and I didn’t like the fluff that was on the mainstream radio. This new stuff was exactly what I was looking for though. It was raw, pure music… Not the over-produce crap I’d been exposed to before…

Which brings me to an interesting point that popped into my head whilst typing this thread…

As I’ve mentioned before, I was raised on bluegrass by my dad all though the 80’s. It occurs to me that, maybe the reason that the indie music scene appealed to me so much, is because of my bluegrass roots. They’re both generally very raw, unfiltered types music. Just normal folk that are out there to perform their art the best way they know how. None of the MTV bs to interfere…

Do you people think I could be on to something here?

Hey,

I think you could be onto something Mattman. Never was much for the fluff you talked about, pretty much only one good radio station where I live, it was thru one of our local universities, heard some amazing songs. Typical though they pulled the plug on the station for several years Thankfully had already met some people at local shows organized by the radio station Actually still have a lot of those friends to this day, gotta love music not only for the songs but the people it brings you in contact with.

Been meaning to add this link to a previous thread for awhile now, some people talking about how and when they got into J/Dino.

The radio show I heard alot of Dinosaur songs on was on Thursday nights here on the college station. Two women hosted the show, they played alot of Dino,SY,Pixies,MBV,Husker Du,etc.some local bands too.It was a real fun show, the first time I heard Freakscene,Little Furry Things,Whatever`s Cool With Me,Sideways,The Leper,Budge,Raisins,Get Me,Start Choppin was on this show.

I think having a bluegrass background is cool,I`m really getting into what Gillian Welch is doing recently, playing bluegrass/folk music for indie/alt rock audiences, she`s a huge Pixies fan which makes her stand out from trad bluegrass bands.

Pop radio in the 80`s is what I grew up hearing and wanting so much to rebel against that type of slick production stuff, that`s why I got into lo fi stuff I guess;look how You`re Living All Over Me was recorded, far from pristine sound but not totally bad sounding production, but awesome sounding.Bug has sort of a haze over it with J`s vocals on top of it,relaxed and cool.
Check out the production on JAMC`s Psychocandy, loads of feedback and would send alot of 80`s pop fans running but to me it sounds wicked, this the way music is meant to sound!

Back in the 1920`s and 30`s music was lo fi because of the primitive recording sound of the time plus there was music from that era, whether it was jazz, blues, country or folk all had a rawness which was`nt fluff, there was fluff from that era too,and there was 1 hit wonders, novelty records, that stuff was more well known in some cases.

Really cool to see so much passion about J’s music. My first contact happened when I read a fanzine from Rio de Janeiro, about new bands – Nirvana, Swervedriver, Telescopes and many others, but some words from "Little Fury Things" attracted my attention. Later, I heard the J.’s version for "Show me the Way" on the radio. I hate Peter Frampton and I thought that J. had a good job in this song. I really liked his voice, different from everything that I heard before. There was a record store here in my town that rented CDs and I found "Fossiles" there. I felt in love with J., I recorded this CD and it became my best friend. J. obtains the impossible: his covers always are better than the original songs, like "Just Like Heaven", but my favourite is "Chunks". So, I run to the only decent store of my town and… a miracle! I found "Dinosaur" and "YLAOM". I love "The Leper", "Kracked", I love everything that J. has done! I bought the others CD in São Paulo, but, some years ago, thieves invaded my house and they took all my alternative CDs, CD player, video… My recovery started when I bought again the Dinosaur’s CDs..But I didn’t find everything, for instance, I had a really good Japanese CD, with "Turnip Farmer" (great!), "Keeblin", and I never found it again. Oh, but the thieves didn’t steal my love for J.’s music! Listening to Dinosaur made me discover other great musicians, like Mike Watt, nice bands, like Tad, Gumball, Sebadoh and I owe to J. my rediscovery of Neil Young. Well, now intend to explore the links for other sites, they seem to be really good! If I have time and if the computer is available again of course, no, I didn’t kill my work coleague… yet!

I’m right with you salamiguy. The opening of "Little Fury Things" just pulled me in. I was prepared to be blown away, but when the squeal of the wah-wah and (I assume) J. shrieking, my heart just swelled with blissful melancholy.

A long, long time ago a good friend of mine that knows my taste in music let me borrow the first album. I listened to it more as background music than actually really hearing it. Then one day I knew that I would have to give it back so I decided to "hear" it! From Forget the Swan on, I was hooked! I was thinking these guys can’t sing, they don’t seem to play all that well, but their words were just great. I have to admit, it was Repulsion that really caught my attention. After that I bought everything I could as soon as it was released.

In addition to great tunes, DJ albums always have the best covers! Am I right or what??

Hey Bobocap,

Definitely with you on the cover art with Dino/J, my fav is Angry Johnny…too cool. My wallpaper currently is a poster made from the Angry Johnny pic from the inside of the Where You Been cover. Not as vibrant in color, but inside the eyes are pics of George & Mike, inside the mouth is a pic of J…only hair and guitar visible. Not sure where the poster is from originally, Voodoo Guy made it into my wallpaper couple months back when he was on ebay.

You can get to Angry Johnny’s & Neil Blenders sites thru this freakscene link

I can remember first listening to "In A Jar" about a year ago in my room because I was intrigued by the band and the album seemed to be the logical pick after "Bug." All the tracks before the song were just incredible, but it was this one amidst the chaos of the previous songs that maintained the intensity but sort set itself apart from the rest of the songs in a tender way. J. was laying out naked here without being able to hide behind distortion. I identified with that vulnerability and it led me through a wonderful winter.

I’m a bit of a latecomer to this thread, but I first heard Dinosaur Jr when I inherited all of my brother chad’s old mix tapes. Freakscene was at the beginning of one of them, I remember thinking "damn, what a great fuzztone"
Later I found "bug" had been copied on another tape, B.A.D. II was on the other side That same collection was the first time I had ever heard the Clash, I rember the tape just stopped and this guy started yelling "london’s burning (dum de dum dum dum!) london’s burning (dum de dum dum dum dum da da da de de da da da, sorry!)" I love the clash

Waitasec, the first time I ever head Dinosaur Jr. was when pop up video played "feel the pain" I think it was ’97 or ’98. It failed to move me, I liked it, but not as much as I do now. Ironically that was the same day I heard Weezer for the first time.

For me it was 1989 or 1990, and I think it was Freak Scene. But that’s not what hooked me. I bought Greenmind when it came out. On first listen, i didn’t like it. Then on the second listen it just grew on me. Now it’s one of my favourite albums. I’ve got to say that I don’t listen to Jr throughout the year, but when spring comes around here in Sydney, I don’t know what happens, and I pull Greenmind out. Happens every year. Just so happens that Spring is when i really got into Greenmind, something in the air at the time: The Wagon, Thumb, Water, Greenmind Muck geez every song on the album. And then I got Bug and Whatever’s Cool with Me in quick succession.

ain’t life beaut
