Do you have a band that you just couldn’t get enough of ? You would tell everyone how great they were, and you would just get "Who".
Your friends tell you they are shit. But then again you feel pretty good you have this awesome band just about all to yourself.
All of a sudden everywhere you turn, every knob and there dog is raving about them.On TV.Flogged to death on radio. It’s killing you.
The band may have changed, maybe they didn’t.Did the rest of the world finally get it?
Anyway, your own experience has changed. You might cringe at the sound of there name,or a song in an advert, that single you here 50 times a day (the acoustic/pop/ballad/token/cover).Or a cool video.
You wish the band every success, but don’t you wish you just kept your mouth shut?

      Who is your band?

Up to the age of 10 I thought I was the only person who knew about Nirvana. I listened to them everyday for about 5 years whilst the kids at school were all into Take That and Boyzone so I thought of them as ‘my’ band. When I grew up and realised that loads of dicks liked them and they were one of the biggest bands ever I stopped listening to them. The only album I ever listen to now is Incesticide and I only play it rarely.

I hate people who say they like nirvana when the only song they’ve ever heard is smells like teen spirit, I never really liked that song before I even knew it was their big hit or anything so now I just hate it.

Yeah , Nirvana is the prime example.I am also just listening to Incesticide.
          How about Foo Fighters?

I liked the Foo Fighters first album but I never got into the later stuff. I saw them live last year and really enjoyed it. They’re not a band I listen to though really.

I really liked the first two Foo Fighter albums. It felt like it was a huge bit of compensation after having Nirvana swallowed by the masses.
Their style really changed dramatically though.I liked the rough edges prior to the stadium incarnation.

this is gonna sound really lame for a rock n roll site, but since you asked, I was really big into Tori Amos (when she had only 1 LP and 1 EP on the market) when I was about 13/14. I liked her lyrics so much that I would doodle them on my notebooks at school, and these popular assholes would grab my things away from me when the teacher wasn’t looking, scrutinize the words, then toss the books back at me and tell me how "fucked up" I was. one girl told me "god, get some taste."

cut to a couple years and a couple albums later, and the people who had tormented me about my tastes in music were painting glitter on their faces and wearing fucking fairy wings to Tori Amos concerts.

I never quite got over that. I haven’t gotten any of her albums since the second one. I don’t think I stopped liking her, but the association with all the pricks of high school really hindered my enjoyment for a while. (this also happened with Blues Traveler, who were ruined for me by all the trust fund hippies at my college.)

now that I’m a grownup maybe I should try to pick up the slack and go get some of the records I missed?

One of my friends on another site is a big Tori fan.He also likes Dino.I don`t know if anyone gave him a hard time about.I had Little Earthquakes back in `93 and heck I liked it but did`nt follow up with any of her other albums.

On the Tori tip though not by Tori…

This is funny because it was Nirvana for me too. At the time they were a local band, bleach was out and they were awesome live. But it was my own slice of heaven it seemed like no one knew about them. This was around 89, 90. I bought Nevermind the day it came out, I skipped 5th period to go get it…….. on tape.

Then they blew up and I remember feeling like "I liked them first!" Now jocks, rockers, preps, and the general population were listening to one of my favorite bands. I quit listening to them around that time. I hoped and prayed that Mudhoney wouldn’t blow up like Nirvana did. Thankfully they didn’t, but the rest of my favorite local bands did (ex. Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains to name a few.)

It was a weird time back then, I was stoked I still had my favs like Dinosaur Jr and Mudhoney. Though they were on major labels they weren’t super popular and kind of put out rad stuff under the radar. Because of the whole Nirvana thing I still won’t listen to anything that is popular on the radio. I try really hard to listen to underground stuff. I still love the feeling when someone asks "who is your favorite band", and you tell them "Dinosaur Jr", and they go "who?"

Mine was Nick Drake – back in 1992 I always read about musicians (including J Mascis) talking about how much of an influence N.D. was, so at a used CD shop I picked up a Bryter Layter and loved it. At the height of "grunge" though, all my friends were like, "what is this folky shit?" and even the more open-minded were giving back-handed compliments like, "well, at least that drum part there is pretty cool." Then Pink Moon was used in that VW ad and then all those same people, a little older and more mature, had the entire Nick Drake catalog and were just praising it as the greatest thing ever, a new discovery from ages ago, and I was like, "ok, but at least remember how much you hated this music a few years ago."

I like your cat man avatar. It makes me wonder what the rest of his body looks like.

Music, it’s so important to me, more then I think people understand. So yeah it does kind of piss me off when you see people listening to a particular song because they saw it on a movie or on tv and they ignore everything else. But how cool is it when you introduce someone to new music and they love it and appreciate it as much as you?

mine would have to be Bad Religion… i listened to them as a wee grom.. and then recipe for hate came out .. what the hell??? dinosaur jr. went mainstream about the same time period.. it was the thing in the early 90’s … now they are all recreating the original sounds…

It is all a matter of perspective I guess.
Mainstream means different things to different people.
I never thought Dino went mainstream, but then again ,it depends on your starting point. And your exposure.
In Australia, people still say ‘dinosaur What?’
In regards to MUDHONEY,..I was into them practically before anything else…their substance, passion, drive…their tour a few years back with ‘Rocket from the crypt’…still one of the best shows I have seen…MARK ARM (no guitar) out over the foldback during ‘Hate the Police’ still sits with me as one of the best moments ever.Still churning it out.
                            I’m with you TONAS.
For me ..SUPERFUZZBIGMUFF really got me into that scene. That cover…then the music…set the whole scene.
As much as the band ticks every box on my little piece of paper, and kicks my arse…I’m glad they never went ballistic.
Then again ,isn’t that why Green River split.
I’m not saying you have to hate a band, just that your perception of the band has changed.
You would love to put that record on, …but there is that part of you that hesitates.
I guess it is getting harder now when bands hit almost immediately..you don’t get a chance for that attachment.
They’re BIG before you know their name.

For me it’s far worse when a band I really like start making crappy albums. Blue and Pinkerton are two amazing albums, Pinkerton has a spot on my top 10 album and I was close to crapping my pants when they reformed. The green album was a good effort, but after that it’s been total and utter garbage coming from camp =W= and it breaks my heart. If green had been their last album, they -and Rivers in particular, would´ve had their names carved in titanium for the generations to come, now they’re…for me it’s like they’ve ridiculed themselves. To think that a kid these days might start singing beverly hills, that’s where I want to go, instead of emptying their sex crazed, angst driven lungs with why bother, it’s gonna hurt me, it’s gonna kill when you desert me, when hearing the name Weezer makes me sick, sad and depressed.

its funny, my year in school, they know NOTHING, everyone listens to mtv and has cell phones.

its like FUCK, why wasnt i born earlier? maybe its just this place and because no one has a mind of their own, they always have to be in groups and listen and do everything the other people do and they show off to be ‘cool’ it sucks…
