I am running Win ME and it is not nearly as stable as I would like it. I want to buy a new hd and I figure I might as well change my OS.
So which is better? 2000? or XP?
July 17, 2002 at 5:50 pm #83232oh man……..glad you posted this. i’ve been running ME for awhile now and it’s really starting to piss me off royally! keeps locking up, and restarting itself, and blah, blah, blah…………..anyhoo, i was thinking of loading up 2000, but would love to hear some input from other folks. thanks
July 17, 2002 at 9:09 pm #83233I access this board through either XP Home or 2000 Professional. Windows 2000 Pro is probably the most stable OS Uncle Billy has released.
Windows XP Home is more of hog than all the others, but I have not really used it, so I am not inclined to comment either pro or con on its stablility.. I did have some user login issues with XP Home, since it leaves applications open, and the MSI (motherboard) FuzzyLogic program, when it would start on another user, would cause my machine to reboot. I guess that is what I get for building my own system
I have no idea on XP Pro, I want it on my work laptop, but I have yet to find a copy floating around Southern California.
Verdict: I would have to say you can not wrong either way, especially since Windows ME ( )is the WORST MS OS of them all. I tried it for a week, and gave up.

July 17, 2002 at 9:47 pm #83234Yep, ME sucks.. I built a new AMD based system, and loaded ME on it and tried… It kept crashing, and when it did stay up, after I loaded the MS patches, it would not access the web through the Windows 2000 box I have sharing the Cable Modem…..
July 17, 2002 at 11:42 pm #83235i only have 128 right now and am dying to get more (just waiting to get a job)… how much ram would you say is the minimum?
July 18, 2002 at 12:11 am #83236For Windows 2000 Pro, I would say 256 – 384 minimum.. You may be to get by with 192..
XP, a lot more, if you can afford 512, then go for it. Again, I have 256 in my XP system, but I have not hammered it yet. But for small tasks 256 works fine. I am waiting for DDR2400 ram to come down just a little more, then I may go for a gig.. As for the processor, I know what The Hallowed Halls of Redmond say.. Take that (300 Mhz) and double it..
For Windows Based systems, the best answer I can come up with for memory is "As much as you can afford".. Windows will use it all, and then some.
I really need to get Windows XP Pro .. In fact, I should have bought it.. Oh well, I guess I will first have to buy a house, and then build another computer.. Athlon XP 2400+ !!!!!!!

It was a work one, but the company went Ch. 11, and never asked for it backI have one IBM T20 Laptop, P3/700, with 384. For work, so it is temporary (this is the I most frequently visit here with)
then, I just built a system (so much cheaper, and you can do it piecemeal) with an Athlon XP1700+ and 256 MB for home use.. Just for fun..

July 18, 2002 at 3:14 am #83239Yea, I was running ME too and just got tired of all the problems that came along with it. Now I’m running Windows 2000 on 3 computers. Two of the computers have 128 meg of ram and there running fine. Not as fast as they would if I had more ram, a but 2000 works fine with 128. I don’t find it to be slow but I’m not running any huge programs on my computers either. I’m also running 2000 on my little sister computer and it only has 64 meg. It is really slow and I do not recommend this, obviously, but it is still better that running ME. I haven’t been on an XP system too much but I have been on a XP system with 128 ram and one running 256 and I think you at least need 256 to run XP. But that is just my personal opinion. Both OS’s are really stable. I’ve read XP is more stable but I haven’t been on it long enough to tell you from personal experience. The only problem I’ve had with 2000 is finding drivers for older hardware (older video card and ethernet card). I’m not sure if XP has the same problem.
July 18, 2002 at 6:46 pm #83240siph, you should give linux a try. i’ll upload a distribution for you. i’ve been using it for a couple months now and it;s pretty coool.
see youin DC to whoever is going.
I am out of the house

July 19, 2002 at 2:37 am #832422000 should work just fine.. Especially with out a lot of gaming.

July 23, 2002 at 7:56 pm #83243July 23, 2002 at 9:28 pm #83244Wow, lots of people here using M$’ shittiest OS ever (ME).
Anyway, I’m also a DIY computer geek, so I’ll weigh in here too.
Siph,
Carl said most of what needed sayin’ OS wise, but if you’re talking WinXP Pro, that’d probably be the best choice ultimately, since it has a few more gadgets included… If it’s XP Home vs Win2K, I’d go 2K in a second.. XP Home is just a crippled version of the Pro. Then again, I’m I’m saying this from my geeky perspective, so you may not need the extra "features" of Pro, if you don’t intend to use them…
256MB of RAM (or more) is definitely recommended. RAM prices are finally on the decline, so now’s the time to buy…
I highly recommend buying your stuff online, OEM (surplus in a plane box), unless you just really feel like you need all the packaging.
Hard drives are super cheap now, too. 40GB seems to be at the best price to size ratio (roughly $75 OEM).
I highly recommend New Egg as a good place to buy your stuff. I’ve bought stuff there several times and have had very good results, and got my stuff quick.
You can also pick up an unboxed copy of whichever OS you choose for a considerable discount, but you’ll have to buy it with some kind of hardware since they won’t just ship a CD.
Oh yeah, one more thing… What kind of gear are you using now? (processor type/speed, current hard drive, motherboard type (if you know it), etc).
Sorry to be so nosey about you’re machine, but this is my specialty.
July 24, 2002 at 6:28 pm #83245pentium 3, 667, um, 7 gb hd, motherboard… no clue…
