September 19, 2007 at 5:04 pm #131905through a few PM’s and an e-mail I found out that my intuition could be flawed. The bottom line is I love these guys.
I’m really glad they are making some money right now. Who knows what the future will be for any of them/or us for that matter. I think J will bust out the fog again but it probably wont be of the Spence/Schools variety, and that’s a no-brainer really.
I’m glad that the reunion has happened and it has allowed me to get to hear and know a little more about Lou Barlow from interviews. I think he seems thoughtful and it appears he actually reads books from time to time which always impresses me.
As far as my implying that the second half of the tour, post sweeny and spence, was less fun and more business, I guess in life many things are that way……..childbirth for instance, the first several hours of Labor are exciting and you are ready to go with all the energy and excitement you can gather. You are the star of the day, everyone is calling you, everyone is excited for you then during the last 10 hours you feel like "Gee, remind me to never do this again" Vacations are always like that for me, the first two days are great and then I go into the "how much is this costing me" mode, I hope the dogs are Okay and I need to get back home because I have a lot of loose ends to tie up. Marriage is like that, sooooo, I don’t want to give the impression (but I did) that the reason that things changed was because the boys from Athens left it’s just that that seems to have been the beginning of the second leg of the journey…in their attempt to make hay while the sun is shinning they now look tired. So now they get a much needed break….even if only for several weeks. I put myself through college doing Astrology charts on the side and I still stand by the fire/water thing. Water can put out fire, fire can burn up water…that very volotility can be exciting but after awhile I always see that fire needs a break to gather up fuel and water needs fresh clear source to replenish itself. The funniest thing is that in the whole scheme of life none of this is really important but provides a much needed distraction for me! Without distractions my life would be ALL work and NO play.September 19, 2007 at 6:18 pm #131906"…in the whole scheme of life none of this is really important but provides a much needed distraction for me! Amen to that, Sister Stefka!

Just from an interaction standpoint, the Schools/Spence Fog involved lots of musical give-and-take, and there was a pronounced "jammyness" to it, which was very unusual to see with J. Normally he is like he is with Dino: in his own corner, with a rhythm section backing him up. A friend who went to the Wiltern show was struck by how J never even really looked at Lou and Murph. That’s just the dynamic they have, and while that doesn’t necessarily speak to anything negative about their musical (or personal) interaction, it’s certainly different in kind — much less open and give-and-take — than the musical relationship J had with the last incarnation of the Fog. It’ll be real shame if he never plays with those guys again. They seemed to be building toward something really great when the Dino reunion happened. It’s not at all that I’m sorry Dino reformed, of course (all the shows through the end of 2005 I saw were magical, and all the ones after were plenty good, if not as transcendent), only that I always hate to see my favorite bands settle into a predictable routine. There are a few bands I’ve stopped going to see for that reason, and if it weren’t for the improvisational character of J’s solos I’d probably stop going to see them at this point too.
September 20, 2007 at 1:18 am #131908Damn, that’s a pretty extensive tour they’ve got lined up for Nov-Dec! However I feel about the routine setlist they’ve settled into, at least they’re digging into smaller markets in places where not many people have had a chance to see them.
