Vote for Pumpkins out of protest. My alterego wanted to vote for NIN but they weren’t there. Yeah, everyone who’s favorite band isn’t there should vote for Pumpkins to protest.

There was`nt enough room in the profile list for other favs either,so people were limited of saying what they like.I don`t blame Jeremiah for this,it`s just the way the profiles were set up.
Another reason I did`nt mention jazz stuff was I did`nt know the reaction of other people to it,some rock fans hate jazz, and rock musicians too(Steve Albinni I heard does`nt like jazz)so I thought I should`nt mention it there but did in various posts.I guess some conformity was in that but I`m pretty much non-conformist,not some alt rock guy who wants to rock and that`s all.Even being non-conformist is considered trendy to some,it seems you can`t be anything! As J would say"I don`t know a thing to be"
It also seems trying to get people to listen to something different is hard, people always want to stick to what they know, you know when people say"I can`t listen to that band because I don`t know their songs"STUPID!how can you know the songs if you don`t listen to them!

Please be aware – no matter how many alteregos I must register, the Smashing Pumpkins will win this thing. No diggity, no doubt.

Ahh, Salamiguy, now we´re getting to the core of this. See, if you didn´t mention the Jazz stuff you like because you weren´t sure how people would react, cause some rock freaks even -shhhhhhhhh- hate Jazz. Well, that´s their problem, not yours. I couldn´t care less really. I mean, probably the list of bands everyone lists as their favourite is so predictable and boring because people mention bands that they think will go down well with the rest of the community and not really the things they like. I mean the fact that Jeremiah listens to Edith Piaf says more about himself (and makes him ultimatively more interesting in my view) than all the bands he listed as his favourites (before he changed it quite recently), though I like all of them. So, yes, please more of the unusual.

PS: And the attitude of ELJ generally makes polls even more boring and predictable.

Boring and predictable… the foundation of the ELJ lifestyle.

Hey,

Just felt the need to add a bit more of my own nonsense to this topic.

I feel the same way you guys do about the state of sameness seen in the alt scene these days…sad really When I look at the discs I bought on a recent road trip seems I am picking up more of the old stuff versus more recent releases…Gang War/Crime of The Century, Heartbreakers/Vive La Revolution, Damned/BBC Sessions…but doesn’t mean I will diss those who like the new stuff…too each his own. What I find more productive is trying to reach them with some cool music..at least what I find cool..and see if they can get past that mainstream addiction. Obviously this doesn’t always work but hey I am always optimistic…not always a good trait So if you can leave some tips/links for us to check out…would be cool

In regards to the conforming/fav lists of people, I agree it is obvious to a degree where we all come from music wise since we are J fans. But there are some huge differences as well, and I have been enlightened and amazed by the diversity among the Mascis fans on this site. I think a couple of topics you started…the feminine side as an example..had people listing all kinds of groups they listened to…a lot more than listed in the fav profile deal. My profile had the predictable Flaming Lips, Grant Hart/Bob Mould etc etc, could have listed at least another 20…but hey I think you know that.

Always cool responding to your challenging posts D…even though it usually starts with a huge gasp on my part when reading the initial post…

Allison

ps I still love the polls…just my opinion though

I forgot to mention I was listening to jazz before I listened to any punk/indie rock, not the other way around. When I mentioned jazz in my posts I did`nt get negative reactions,so I thought everyone is cool with it.
Since you been back it`s been cool,Welcome back!things were getting dull here recently so I`m glad to hear your comments.
I first started listening to jazz when I was 15 and was totally crazed about it,it started getting dull after a few years and then I got into punk/indie rock,I was reluctant to listen to it because of the grunge thing at the time but went for it anyway, after a few years it got dull as well, just like the jazz thing.I guess when you listen to a type of music too long and become familar with it,it does get boring,so now I`m trying to be difersified enough to listen to more variety.During the jazz years I also listened to blues and avant garde classical stuff like Cage,Stockhausen,Boulez, etc. I also like Satie and Mahler.
There used to be a radio station from New York that used to play alot of early jazz stuff,Bix,Jelly Roll,Ellington, etc. I used to listen to that until they changed they`re format to easy listening! They played alot of obsure 20`s and 30`s entertainers stuff that was semi-jazz like Ruth Etting and Annette Hanshaw that was cool as well.

i have to agree with lots of the comments made in this thread. people shouldn’t be scared of mentioning artists who are different to what everyone else seems to like. after getting into alternative guitar music, i found myself falling in love with weird digital music. this music is where the present lies, it may not be recognised as the best music around but it is certainly the most original.

if you’re looking for challenging, ground-breaking music then listen to any artist on the Warp record label. particularly Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Autechre. they are true geniuses and all make very different music to each other. my most recent discovery though, was someone called Speedy J, he has made the darkest, scariest and heaviest music ive ever heard, and this is electronic music. the album ‘A Shocking Hobby’ is a modern classic, u should all give it a listen, there’s nothing like it.

in the end, there is a lot of great genres out there, and im sure many of us listen to some hip-hop, jazz, techno etc, and we shouldnt be afraid of admitting it.
