There´s been some vinyl talk the last days(I´ve been going on about it anyways.) Instead of doing a solely vinyl/turntable thread I thought it would be nice to know what you all prefer and why. So, are you a vinyl, cd, tape, mp3, or all of the above, person ?
Personally I´m a big fan of vinyl. It makes both finding(in the store,) and listening to the music a much more enjoyable experience compared to cd´s. Cd´s have a obvious convenience factor, and some stuff aren´t available on vinyl, but there´s nothing like the feel of freshly obtained vinyl goodness.
December 12, 2006 at 2:38 pm #124137Why isn’t karaoke machine on the list?
December 12, 2006 at 2:45 pm #124138cd. cd players are just the right size for me to carry.
id like to have a little vinyl collection, no more than 20 records of old classics 60s records and some other classics.
December 12, 2006 at 2:54 pm #124139Woooohoooo…. 8-track, baby!!!
j/kAt home I like to have all my favorites on my computer… makes it nice and easy to pick & choose what I want to hear.
In my car, it’s all CDs and satellite radio.
December 12, 2006 at 2:56 pm #124140Though I much prefer the pops and imperfections of vinyl, I had to answer with my Ipod. Simply because I can call up any CD I own in a matter of seconds without actually having to carry my entire library with me. I absolutely love it.

Tonas, does that mean that you own a turntable and use if from time to time ?
SonicD, one of my favorite activites is going to the stores that sell used vinyl and flip through everything they´ve got in search of cool stuff. I´ve gotten the entire beatles catalog on vinyl that way.

I still have a lot of vinyl tucked away. Mostly late 80’s early 90’s Sub Pop colored vinyl. I would hate to scratch any of them and my kids might destroy them, so I just let them collect dust. I guess the hope is someday maybe I’ll be able to pay for college for one of my kids from the sale of those limited edition colored vinyl singles. I doubt it though… who knows. My favorite single is The Wagon on white vinyl issued on Sub Pop, before green mind came out. I think the b-side is Better than Gone.
December 12, 2006 at 3:52 pm #124143I understand that you don´t want to get scratches on them, or risking that your kids accidentaly kill them, though I gotta say it would be pure torture to me just having them collecting dust instead of playing them -you´re a stronger man than me

I´ve debating the preserving VS enjoying side of it myself. I want to buy a jukebox and stick all my pavement, weezer, whitestripes, guided by voices, dino, built to spill, yo la tengo, the who, beatles, kraftwerk etc 7" in there. The only problem is that some of them are fetching a pretty penny at auctions etc, and so I´m trying to decide if I´m gonna enjoy them -which´ll cause them to get worn eventually, or just have them sitting on the shelves. My decision changes from day to day, but I know that I would get a kick out of playing them in the jukebox, so I hope I´ll wisen up and buy me one to play them in.December 12, 2006 at 4:04 pm #124144That would be way cool, but yeah those things aren’t cheap. I guess in the end I don’t mind not hearing the scratches and pops because all I really care about is rocking out. And I can do that just as easily with my ipod or listening to an LP.
BTW I have a friend who is way into vinyl too, actually cd’s and most forms of media. He has a really nice expensive state of the art set up with a turntable, reel to reel, you name it. I remember asking him what the point of all that shit was, considering the type of music we like was probably recorded with a shitty $100 guitars and $200 dollar amps. I could see the point if stuff was recorded in state of the art studios using the best equipment. Anyways I found it funny and a complete waste of money IMO.
I guess you may as well listen to your records, most of the vinyl I have is duplicated on CD (I just buy the CD when I buy the vinyl, if its available). If you do get a juke box you’ll have to post pics.
December 12, 2006 at 4:16 pm #124145*laughs* Reel to Reel, that rocks ! Has he played anything on it so you can listen to it ? Well, at least it looks cool as hell.
A friend of mine has a fairly expensive set up, I remember bringing a black flag lp to him and listening to it there, it didn´t sound good at all. But for the music he listens to I guess it´s perfect, since he´s into a lot of bands that are well into the high fidelity division.Pictures will be taken, that much I can promise
December 12, 2006 at 4:34 pm #124146I collected vinyl a few years ago when I had bought everything a band had released on cd but I guess I got addicted and started spending all my money on it. I usually bought coloured vinyl or etched or whatever but then I just started buying lps. I really like listening to vinyl but I am out of the house so much that I had to choose the ipod.
I listen to that thing everyday for at least 3 hours and I bought some cool speakers for it so I really do take it everywhere. It makes things so much easier than carrying round 10 CDs like I used to. My CD cases don’t have huge cracks down them now which is an advantage.
December 12, 2006 at 5:29 pm #124147I don`t know if I have a prefered format but I`ll break it down…
Vinyl-love it
but not many chances around here to get it anymore.Sure I can pay $25 each for new vinyl of older albums but it just seems to much.Back in the old days I could get them for $5 each.I just feel stupid paying 5 times that amount.I did spend $25 on a Godspeed album(the debut)just to see how it felt though
I have over 200 records which is`nt bad.CD-ok,I have more if them then any other format, over 1000.
Tape-I have 400 of these suckers.Mostly blank with two albums on each 90 minute deal.So 800 albums alone right there
Mp3-yeah I download some and it`s not much different than taping stuff from the library like I did 15 years ago.Are the RIAA going to bust libraries someday?
December 12, 2006 at 6:35 pm #124148It’s hard to say. Aesthetically and sound-wise I like vinyl the best, but a lot of new bands don’t release stuff on vinyl (some do, but not all…I’d like to get me a Lightning Bolt LP); and honestly, I grew up on CDs so that’s what I prefer.
December 12, 2006 at 9:39 pm #124149…vinyl is preferred for me, but it is rare that i have the time to sit back and listen to my records, but those times are best, while walking around i rock out to my mix tapes on my walk-man and those times are too good not to mention, i spend lots of time falling asleep to music and records don’t work out well because you need to stop them or it is bad to fall asleep and let them spin all night (needles are hard to come by and pricey), so i have to give a shout out to cd’s my falling asleep choice, the other draw back of vinyl is the availibily of music, but that just makes it better when you find something you really love and the process of putting it on and watching it spin makes me smile, just the overall warmth is unmatched…
December 13, 2006 at 9:48 am #124150Ah, a good mixtape is great fun. One of my vinyl pushers has some really cool tapes on display, old nofx, bad religion, voodoo glow skulls, ten foot pole, pennywise, rancid, refused, pavement, no use for a name etc -and they´re in this cool whatchamacallit it that spins around. The geek in me desperately lust for after it, but he´ll won´t part it out -and there´s 40 tapes and the prize he´s asking is $700. That seems kinda steep for something that´ll probably never get played.
