Hey Rubrick,

Great post, am also interested in what kind of kit/cymbals J is now playing….any help out there? Couple of my drummer friends use the Big Ride as a Crash…would have it no other way!!!

Would love to see a picture of J in that jazz band, sounds amazing and very cool.

Allison
If only I could remember where I saw a recent picure of J behind his kit…in a purple outfit of course…god my memory has been zombified

Hey Javro,

Laughed myself silly, odd thing is I thought the same thing when I checked out a Crooked Fingers set on dcn.com. On 1st glance I was sure the singer was Joe Cocker…too funny.

Hey,

I hope it ends the debate, Watt has been playing for sooo long, god 41 tours I think he said at one point…yikes. You have to respect the guy for giving it pretty much everything he has every show…not everyone does that. After hearing the Buddy Rich rant was wondering if he will shave the beard off…just kidding.

Hey Shade,

Just want to clarify that I in no way thought you or anyone else was ignorant in posting their opinions…definitely agree that all opinions are valid. To put some context into my saying harsh, I sadly am from Canada…currently…and have to drive hundreds of miles to check out any type of cool show. The drive to see Mascis in November last year was treacherous but well worth it, recently another road trip took six-seven hours to check out another of my heros. So 45 minutes of what sounds like a pretty amazing set by Mascis would be very cool by me…even if I had to drive for hours to see it. Again thought I was being empathetic about you guys feeling ripped off, hope no hard feelings involved…funny how things get going….

Hey,

Relax guys, thought I was being kinda empathetic toward your feeling ripped off with only 45 minutes of Mascis/Dino stuff.

My take on the 3 generations thing is that obviously Asheton came 1st, Watt is several years older than Mascis and started up before him…I could be wrong but hey thats what I thought. Mascis of course is the 3rd generation. The fact that they are doing tons of Stooges songs has been well documented along the tour…as well as the fact that Asheton might be joining them along the West coast. Sorry you guys felt ripped off but the show sounds like it was pretty good even for only 45 minutes.

As for the history/punk generation jam involved in the Mascis/Watt/Asheton showcase….I would love to see that and don’t feel the need to apologize for recognizing and appreciating the history involved in getting Mascis to where he is today. You obviously choose not to and that is just fine by me, hopefully you can respect that others don’t share that opinion.

Watt is definitely no Bob Pollard vocally but don’t remember him ever saying he was…he works hard with what he has…again just fine by me. As for his bass runs, to each his own right…not for you oh well. Mascis made a great point in a recent interview that him and Watt balance each other out. Great tag team in my opinion, but again only my opinion you are definitely free to express yours…just hopefully you can respect that there are many different opinions that are all valid.

Hey,

As I said above I can understand being disappointed with only 45 minutes of dino/J stuff if your not a Stooges fan. I think Babalon made a good point about the history involved with 3 generations of punk rock on stage. Also agree with Babalon on Ashetons guitar sounds, no one was doing that great sonic wailing way back then…he is amazing and deserves all the respect he receives. Calling the show crap after the Mascis stuff seems kind of harsh especially after you got to hear Get Me, Ammaring, Budge, Repulsion just to mention a few.

Umascow… a friend of mine would be thrilled to death if he read the Richard Asheton thing…he always considered himself the bastard son of Ron!!!

Hey,

Just to clarify the too many notes thing was from week 4 of Watt’s diaries, some girl told Watt he sounded better when he played less notes…apparently didn’t say it so diplomatically and pissed him off.

I forgot to mention that Watt is also a man who loves cats…does it get any better than that…I think not!!!

Hey Kockney,

Funny how people see things so many different ways, my take on Watts diaries are very different then yours. I see him as a very honest & open guy with a heart of gold…trying his best to do whats right for Mascis and dogging on those…GB…who he senses are not giving what they should for the cause. Watt is the 1st to point out the "clams" he hits, but hey he does a pretty good job in my opinion. He had a hellride of a year in 2000, it takes a while to completely recover, physically & mentally. He was having problems with cramping in his hands for a good part of the tour but maintained as best he could…what a trooper!! Really have to give him credit for taking on such a huge job after such a significant illness. Ok enuf of my lecture on Watt

If you want to talk bass players what about Captain Sensible/Ray Burns…wicked bass player and one of the best guitar players I have heard as well…very cool. He is putting something together with Scott Asheton and Sonny Vincent, Captain and Rock Action a rythmn section to die for!!!

Allison

ps I would love to see Watt publish his diaries…he could probably pay off his medical bills with the cash from that. Gotta respect a guy who just lets it go on the web for free….very cool.

I say a big YES to that question, great bass player…like him even better using a pic!!
