I have a ’66 and a 66 MIJ re-issue. In my opinion, the only thing the vintage one has is mojo.when it all comes down to it, they sound very similar. The wood is older, drier and a little lighter.
The edge goes to the vintage, by the slightest of margins on the slightly mellower pick-ups. Neck shape, playability, very, very close. I have not A/B’ed with an American vintage RI jazz. I wanted blocks and binding like my oldie so the only choice was MIJ. I think you can find a Jazzy for under $800 that you’ll be very happy with. Don’t forget the "j"!For pure heart wrenching guitarmy awesomeness, YLAOM is #1. But all the albums have great songs on them.
I just scored a Metal Muff and needless to say, it’s sliding into number 1 position on my board.
Using my showman head to get a huge fat, clean sound and bang, metal muff for distortion. Boss SD-1 For OD.
no love for the V? I love ’em. I passed on the reverse V though. Despite their looks supposedly a great sounding guitar.
Hey man, the J is cheaper than that!

between this guitar, their promotion of guitar hero and the swiss cheesing of their formerly solid body guitars, Gibson can bite me.
When are they going to put out an accurrate 59 RI? Those bastards are going to wait until 09, have Tom Murphy drop them a few times and then charge 20 f-ing grand for it! I would blow up as chool for the tailpiece to be in the right position. UGHHHHHHHH
Don’t get me started. And I own les pauls and ironcially use a …….cloud 9. But I want a solid RI with the correct appointments at $3k, NOW!
Not a self tuning guitar. What’s nesxt, self playing? A guitar shaped sampler? Buy a guitar get the player free?Dinosaur, Led Zep, MBV……come on HUSKER DU!
Dude, if she was one in a million then there are roughly 6,500 more of her walking around. Nice axe.
Write a song about it and it will set you free! The PRS/Mesa boogie halfstack is the official hessian rig for the last ten years. I hear that you can also get a coupon for baggie shorts and a Limp Bizkit hat, which only fits when worn off center, with each purchase.
I love whipping out my epi v or squier and being dismissed by the " real metal bands" only to have them ask "How did you mod that fender to be so loud?".The electro harmonix electric mistress is awesome for the old space ship noise!!!!
That’s the point i was trying to drive home about set up. It won’t transform a $50 squier into a ’59 Les Paul. But it will make it playable and that’s the first hallmark of a great guitar. How easy/well does it play.
Sorry to hear about the personal stuff. It can’t rain all the time, you know what I mean.I’m a big advocate of those fender hot rods and 4×10’s. Cheap tube fury, takes pedals well.
Yo, Randy Jane that comment was meant to be funny.Where ya’ been? But you can always tell who the guitar players are by who stands in front of you and looks at your pedals/gear. I am defintely guilty of gear gazing….

Hey that dan armstrong is awesome. Does it get the Greg Ginn sound?
Wow. J playing yer axe. Cool.
And you got him to break his alleged humbucker embargo.I think he uses a standard tune-o, but the one on the sig is slightly different. I think it has been adjusted to play on fender neck because this thing, out of the box, screams. Fender make the bridge a damned accessory. I written that 20n times now. I’ll stop.
I use two amps and have different effects going to each. One is solid state one is tube. I think it gets the balance of attack and sweetness that I like. It’s cool to step on a phaser and hear it thur one amp and then step on the wah and use it like a manual phaser. Or setting off echo in one cab and pahsing in another.
I don’t think you need a great guitar. I think you need one that plays well and fits your sound. I have an Epi V and a squier ($85) that are aweome guiitars. I use them live. I am fortunate enough to be able to compare some of these guitars to some very high end and vintage stuff.
In a studio situation, you can hear a difference. In a live situation, get your yourself a cheapo, spend some money on a set up and don’t worry about it. The only people in the audience who notice are other idiot gear snob guitarists. Like me.
here’s a cheap and cool suggestion. Get a Boss Super Overdrive SD-1. It is a really versatile od/distortion that can cover everything from Blues to near metal. It’s strength is a really good, natural sounding overdrive that can be used a booster for solo work. It seems to cut through the mix well. Although I am a huge muff fan, the only way I could use it live and have it work in every club(we don’t always have control over the sound) was to dime it and that sound is not always grreat depending on the room. This SD-1 cuts on every stage and always leaps out of the mix. No washout. You can get them for like $30 and they are availble in just about every town. Face it, we’re not all J and don’t have techs looking after every piece of gear. That’s why sometimes I think it’s better to be bale to pedlas that are drop in replacements from Seattle to NY than soe piece of acrhaic gear that can’t be fixed easily. Worls well w/ a Rat and evn better with an eh hottubes(new version)
