Jaron,
If you check your PM, maybe I too can jump for joy.I had a feeling that link wasn’t going to pop. It is on Yahoo right now and it talks about how Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blame America for this tragedy, talking about sexuality, porn, ACLU, People for the American Way. I am not an advocate of a lot of the things they disparaged, but their bloviating goes way beyond poor taste, even for them.
As far as your post, I didn’t think a change of clothes would scare off a fratboy, maybe get him to ask for your phone number maybe
! How’s that for poor taste?My bucket runneth over….
us.news2.yimg.com/f/42/31/7m/dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap.20010914/us/attacks_robertson_falwell_1.htmlMaxini,
Sorry to burst your buble, but my info told me she was preggers with Andre’s a few months ago. I think I hear it right before Wimbledon.
Prob in USA Today newspaper if anywhere.I know you won’t believe this Mattman, but my real name came out as the Xerox, also. I went with Half Man and appropriately enough, I am the Weed Whacker.
Allison,
Thanks for lightening our hearts with this thread. Your posts in general are a pleasure to read and I am blessed to be here with you to receive them on a regualr basis…. for now.Funny you should bring up morning after blues…
I was testing a 1000 lbs. tank transmission years back and was hung over big time. I forgot to tighten down one of the brackets and the sucker slid on to my foot. Luckily I was wearing steel toes and I got out of that part with minor bruising. When the other folks were trying to free me, one of the steel cables on the sling holding up the tranny on the overhead crane snapped and busted me in the eye. So in essence, I took more damage with stitches and a slap to the face then with a one tron transmission on my foot. Lucky and dumb……..Mattman,
I am offering my own apology to you. When I posted that thread, my intent was to make sense for myself the depth and weight of everything I had been hearing, seeing and feeling for the last few days. In no way did I intentionally try to imply or point out any undesirable points or takes on your threads. In fact, I would go so far as to say the similarities in the way we think and express ourselves might point to the beginnings of a good friendship. I hope I am clear in this respect. Again, my apologies.I have been struggling also to swallow our imperfections as a nation, due to my own natural tendency to accept everything about our way of life as being just and proper. When I first started reading this post back on page one, I was highly pissed off over the fact that partisianship could even be thought of at a time like this. Maybe this is "separation anxiety" Then, as soon as I went to work, I had my co-worker mindlessly rail off about how the major networks have a liberal bias and how she was so happy to hear "the truth". I am totally against party politics but am very pro- issue and pro-grass roots. I told her I thought everyone should have thier own enclave to hear things in a way they want to. Man, she got pissed! In that respect, I must say tough luck. As Mattman said, some people need to be told of their freedoms and reminded how we, as a civilization, got to the point we are at now. Sometimes, shunning in itself can lead to all sorts of things. But silence at a time action is called for is just as bad if not worse.
Big ups for DIY life ethic!I think I found a direction on the John Winthrop post a few pages back that fits at this point. Mattman, you talked about how we were hit due to our own complacency. If a nation, a people, become complacent or, shall I say, secure, or even comfortable, for that matter, would they do so because they feel they have the right to feel that way? What gives us the right? Why should we have the right to feel that way more than any other nation?
I think we are the greatest people on the face of this earth and that is only because I grew up here, lived here my whole live, served to protect its interests, and am currently benefiting from doing
so via my tuition. That is solely a view I can take in correlation to the experiences I have. The view cannot be taken and thrust upon anyone else as "gospel" or mandate. I must continue to be open-minded and respectful of all people, regardless of their criteria, experiences and views. The "city on a hill" is more visible, and thus more likely to cause others to feel it is out of reach and off limits. When that occurs, resentment kindles, followed by animallike, instinctive action. In short, attitude—>behavior—> consequence. So far, none of us are sure what is soon to transpire as a result of this cycle played out on a national scale. All I know is that for me to be of any use to anyone else in this time of need, I have to do what I need to do to keep my thoughts and actions in harmony and then project that to my fellows, doing nothing more
than the next right thing, if that is all I can do.Mattman, I agree with you by the way. You just gave me a good launching pad is all. Nothing more.
Shooting at the walls ot heartache… bang, bang. Yeah, Patty Smyth wuz fine! I think she dired up uintil Don Henley did a solo with her about a decade after "The Warrior".
Mine was Suzi Quatro, when she used to star as Leather Tuscadero in Happy Days. I think I was 4-5 years old or somethings. Teen years, It had to be Oliva D’Abo, no doubt.
Impracticality,as we have seen, goes beyond dollars and cents. I do believe the redirection can be achieved. The tank armor was designed to impede sabot rounds from enemy tanks. These rounds travel at the velocity of aprox 1 mile per second. Usually, if a round penetrates the cupola or troop center of the tanks, the effects are fire damage, incrediible suction, and of course a hunk of steel bouncing around like s superball. Not very pretty. I would think they could make larger pieces of this armor to accomdate a large object.
As you said, Mattman, the fallout would be hard to control. Perhaps the armor, upon impact, could immediately deliver a high-concentration of water and or Tyoe "C" extinguishing fluid until, let’s say electric heat sensors, detect a drop in temperature and shut off. Of course, the operative idea is to keep in mind a minimization of casualties.
As far as the memorials, there is no shortage of places to have one. You cannot put a construct that serves the purposes this one did in just anyplace. I could list some considerations but I would never leave this thread. I like the mini-memorials idea.
This is completely impractical at first glance and that I am not architecturally minded doesn’t help either, but during the Gulf Conflict, we installed reactive applicate armor on the amphibious personnel carriers and tanks. The Merkava, Israel’s main battle tank, has a different version we called "dingle balls". The balls would explode if hit with any sort of object traveling at a specified force, thus redirecting and minimizing damage.
The reactive applicate armor is very similar and is attached to the vehicles in blocks that attach with nuts and bolts. If impacted, they explode on contact, redirecting and somewhat neutralizing the incoming device.
If this concept could be marketed (if it is not already) and sold to the construction or security industries, perhaps tragedies like we are suffering could be lessened and the bite might be taken out of the bad dogs.
Regarding the hoax quote, hoax or not, you can easily spin that toward John Winthrop and the Puritan settlers and his conception of his people, "God’s chosen people" having a "city on a hill". He was talking about God establishing a covenant with the U.S., Christians, specifically. Of course, the Old Testament believes that Israel are the chosen ones. Where am I going with this? Who knows…. It is interesting though, in light of this thread and recent events.
Just heard the Presidential address…..
I could be wrong, but if there was an question of whether or not this is an international incident, it might get answered as one if no answers are found. I hope that one comment was more heat of the moment or that I am reading more into it than need be.Red Cross told me to call back in the morning here, so I will have to swallow my tears for an evening at Freakscene.
As far as pity, I think NYC is obvious. I simply recalled your proximity and made a gesture of empathy in that context, Jaron. You seemed pretty shook up in the previous pages. I am too.
TomI offer my condolences to anyone who knows someone who is admist the carnage or live in the general vicinity, especially Jaron.
The more I look for answers, the more questions I find. It is of no use.
I am with Mattman and the others. Bush may not be the best thing going, but you can believe he will search for justice, at least as far as the military and the DOD are concerned.
Thanks from all of you folks across the pond. We need it at this time like at no other.
Damn.
