Tony,
I wish it were the moving company the kited my stuff. At least a company will have public records to skiptrace .

As far as the transcriptions, they were not transcribed in the U.S., the covers were processed in Japan and thus the transcriptionists kind of did it in pidgin english. I can’t remember the exact wordings but when you try to listen to it and can’t understand all of the words and have only that to go off of, you gotta LOL !

I am even willing to settle for American versions of these two EP’s. Were they released here also? I bought mine while stationed in Okinawa so I never took time to check into them here since I brought them back with me.

Allison,
I did check out the site you posted in the last message. The article is chock full of reference points, but I will only mention a few.
One, the references to Hermosa Beach’s punk scene was pretty nice to see, but the article points out that Black Flag was from there. According to Get in the Van, Henry Rollins’ tour journals from his time in Black Flag, he refers to Hermosa Beach as a place they would go to visit other bands and see their shows, revering their brutal approach with awe. Why would he do that if the band itself was from Hermosa Beach? I think the author of the article might be mistaken on that point.

The writer does mention the terms "social artifice" and "arbitrary authority". I thought those two phrases were perfect for this particular thread. If "artifice" is being used to indicate a false or insincere behavior, then, yes, conforming to some standard for the sole purpose of identificiation with a mass of people or to feel accepted, is a fool’s game I think we all play to some extent as a normal part of our human nature. I did it, that’s for sure, and our catalyst in this thread seems to be doing the same thing. The difference, perhaps, is that the driving forces that sustained me in the "punk" vein over time has been, of course the enjoyment of the music, and also the search for truth in all forms, especially when it comes to human relations. I do think that was the main reason I was attracted to the culture in the first place, with the social need for fellowship falling in behind that. Due to my own coarseness, I think I probably pushed a lot of people away in some of my tactless endeavors, but at the same time, I think those people who stuck with me over the years have not found many more who will give them the straight scoop, and not a sunshine-pumping factory.

As far as "arbitrary authority", I do think people conditionally give their okey-doke on things and project the same for reasons of self-glorification, present company excluded, of course ! I think this , too, goes back to wanting to be accepted by one’s peers or being looked to as being "special". I now have to watch myself closely when I run off at the lips like our pal did. Herbert Spencer, a social philosopher from the late nineteenth century, remarked something to the effect of "contempt without investigation". I have made myself the jackass repeatedly over the years by becoming "arbitrary" in my endorsements.

Thanks for the link Allison.

You know,
I looked at this kidrockschtunk jerky with nothing more than pity in my heart. Like salami said, the kid is probably just fitting in to his current social niche. Imagine what would happen to him if all of a sudden, he was airlifted down to Clark and Belmont streets in Chicago or even down in the Triangle in North Carolina. Do you think he would all of a sudden "get with it"? I have my doubts. I think at first he would probably go into a deep depression, kinda anomie like. At that point, perhaps, he may come to desperate means and enlighten himself. But who knows. Maybe he will come to a true version of "punk" and tell the army with different uniforms to go f— off and do what he wants, kind of like salami did. I played the follower for a long time, yet I let the personal drum in my head set the beat and everything else got in step or it didn’t. Luckily, I was able to find cool folk in all walks and I still do. Diversity rules and a new status quo is no different from an old one. The idea is still the same: a reigning-in of freedom. My favorite color remains flourescent clear.

Siphonophora,
Welcome aboard! I hope you will find the people here as friendly and accomodating as I have in my brief stay. Jeremiah, the sysop ( now that word really can show a person’s age[mine of course] ) is in the process of adding and refining some things so stick around, I think you will be pleased.

Not that you should feel obligated to do so, but some folks have listed in this topic section the experience they had when being introduced to J and his music for the first time. It seems to be a good get-to-know deal also with the regular posters. Either way, have fun!
Tom

A friend I met here where I live gave me a CD by a now-believed-to-be-defunct band called Dead Steelmill. They originally hail from the same neighborhood I gew up in in Chicago,IL, USA. The name refers to how the economy of that particular area went from prosperity to poverty in about 5 years due to most of the steelmills in that area closing their doors. Now the area is a urban hellhole with drugs and street gangs amok.

As far as the CD is concerned, Steve Albini produced it. The album was released in 1996 on an label called Wisconsin Steel Records. (Wisconsin Steel was the first and biggest plant to fold up back in the early eighties, by the way). The music is pretty much hardcore punk, (more Minutemen and Black Flag than Korn and Limp. Sorry, Mattman !) and talks about life in the area coping with the fallout. The band has a link on Yahoo, but I think they are not together. If anyone knows more on them and wants to know more, let me know.

Gave this thread an hour yesterday to gather more info. Unfortunately, I have not "struck gold" yet in clarifiying the ties to J. For that matter, I do not know how much more I should dig into this. The feeling I get is that this is info that might not be readily accessible for a reason. The last thing I want to do is piss people off over this, be it J, the admin or anyone else. I surmise this might become very sensitive if explored too deeply. The intent all along was to improve my own knowledge and perhaps maintain or embellish upon the historical trail J has blazed in his performing times that this board has so wonderfully documented. Any feedback at all would be appreciated, good, bad or neutral.

As for latest findings, Larry Lifeless was listed playing for a band called Kilslug and another called Angry Hate with a gentleman named Seth Putnam of a band called AC. Also, Upsidedown Cross was still playing as of 1999. For an article on them, go to http://www.worcesterphoenix.com/archive/music/99/08/20/ON_THE_ROCKS html. The article also mentions a multiband event called MAFIO. Any info on that would be nice as well.

P.S. Allison, got to watch the Bearz lose again in its miserable entirety. 1st half, no suprises, 2nd half, much better, but in true Chicago fashion, they let it slip away.

Here’s some good stuff with Naked Raygun. song: Hips Swingin’:
Hey you little South American Spanish speakin’ country
Watch me as I whip some political advisors right on ya
You’ll still have a bit of your own personality left
Don’t you worry this kind of thing happens all the time

N-R again, Song: The Sniper Song

Banging on the inside
Trying to get out

It’s not all this trash that blows around my feet
It might be this day it might be this heat
And it’s all these idiots that are bothering me
with their drivelling prattle and their useless critiques

So now I know where snipers come from
A man weighted down by too heavy a load
So now I know where snipers come from
Peering down through the scope with an amoral code.

Funny, the Hips Swingin song came out around the Ollie North/Contra mess, but you can still see relevance today. In the Sniper Song. I feel that tune was just a wee bit too accurate in depicting the times to come.

Just got my fall books today for 4 classes: $300.00@. Thank God for the Gi Bill! I am still of the opinion most students who aren’t as fortunate get juked on trying to resell their books or just trying to make ends meet and breathe deep. Some suggestions:
To free up some tuition money for books, try and get a couple of books out of the library on special grants. If your geneology skills are good and you can find a relative who belong to some strange group, you might get some money coming your way. Also writing essays for different groups might produce funds. If you can really stretch yourself, look into dialing up the major corporations in your closest metropolitan area and beg them to sponsor you or find some business or foundation that shares your intended major or fringe interests and see if they will help. You would be suprised at what people will give if they feel they share something in common with a "good" person, regardless of the bottom line. I can say I have tried this method, yet in things like finding employment and it is the same deal and yes it does work if you work at it. Hope this helps.

I will comment on a few bands and you can decide for youselves if a) they stand the test of time or if b) I am insane for liking them all in some respect. The list and comments:
1. Joni Mitchell. Her works are some of the most muscially and lyrically challenging to come across in modern music. Sadly, I think she has smoked one too many cigarettes over the years. Compare Blue to Taming the Tiger.
2. Metallica. Sorry guys, but I still think everything before the Black album drew from most of the harder punk bands mentioned in the earlier posts in this thread. See Garage Days Rerevisted or Garage Inc. Now, they are a parody of themselves. I am sad to see greed take such a toll on a group.
3. Naked Raygun. They have been compared to the Buzzcocks, who I haven’t yet heard. I have loved Raygun since first listen, just like J. Had they only hung on just a year or two more, I think they could have been quite the force in a more widely known sense, especially with the Pumpkins blowing Chicago’s scene open like they did.
4. Bad Religion. I didn’t care much for their earlier albums, too much damn noise and speed. On the album New America, I was impressed. You can understand all the lyrics, the melodies are catchy and the ethic still remains.
4. Misfits. Go ahead and tell me the Danzig stuff was not groundbreaking. I wouldn’t care even if you did. The newer stuff packs quite a whollop of its own, but they are either verging on or have arrived at a good thing being done to death
5. Johnny Cash. The guy is flat out amazing. I know, I know, he is the favorite country start for alt rock folks to bandwagon, but the truth is the guy can paint pictures with his lyrics, much like Joni. See God, Love, and Murder. Nuff Said.
7. Dolly Parton. Go ahead, laugh some more. If you pick up her new bluegrass album, Little Sparrow, you’ll understand.
8. Laura Nyro. She has a 2 CD set out called Stone Soul Picnic that was incredibile. She managed to cover some many different genres of her time and to do it all with equal talent. She is missed.
9. Pennywise. They ripped it up on Unknown Road back in the early 90’s. For about 4 years, I stopped listening to them. Then Straight Ahead came out in 1999 and the only difference to me is that they got muscially tighter in their playing and the lyrics are a socio-political agitator’s dream.
PS. I was thinking about Jawbox a month or so ago and decided to look them up and was sad to see they disbanded. For Your Own Special Sweethart was a goldmine. They were very creative and powerful. Sorry for the mini novel, a tad.

Salamiguy,
Thanks for the Dresch info. Funny, one of the first magazine articles I read on SK long before I heard their music mentioned they were a "lesbian" group. Knowing that Dresch provided the label for the early records makes sense. What threw me though was Corin having a baby. I guess the news article, which I think was from either SPIN or AP, was not totally correct, or incorrect not in just content, but for delving too deep into their personal lives. Heck, I could be just as bad for getting too caught up in it……

I think I will get off the rollercoaster now.
