Neko Case / 20 may 2006 / Paradiso small hall
January 2003 was the last time Neko Case visited Amsterdam. I can recall that one pretty good and apart of the singing capability of Neko I was impressed that night by her side kick Jon Rauhouse. This guy supported Neko?s voice by pure steel guitar playing. I was lucky, he is still is in her band. On her last album she was supported by the Calexico tandem + Garth Hudson. Of course they didn?t come to Amsterdam; but no harm done. She brought a perfect band. Rauhouse on al kind of (steel) guitars and banjo, Paul Rigby on guitar, a stand up bass, drums in the style of John Convertino (Calexico) and another side kick; Rachel Flotard. She gave extra body to the voice of Neko and she also brought the looks. My god I was instant in love with this cat
. I had the chance to talk with her afterward, almost asked her to marry me but I wasn?t drunk enough 
. She is the lead singer of Visqueen.
Okay the concert. It was superb. Neko sang so pure, with that cry in her voice. Playing on four-string guitar or just singing. The two voices were blending perfect. It is a pity that Neko has the charisma of the president of Holland. Otherwise I?m sure she would play the big hall instead of the small on.
They played a lot of her last album; ?? Fox confessor brings the blood?, but also a lot of ?Blacklisted?. During the encore I asked for ?I?m waiting for the sunrise?. Jon plays in this song the role of Les Paul while Neko ?plays? Mary Ford. Unfortunately she wasn?t willing to take the risk, but I saw a twinkle in Ron?s eyes like he was thinking: Yes! On the other hand, Neko made a brilliant version of Dylan?s ?Buckets of rain? It was nice to watch and listen to Paul Rigby, playing really small, adding exactly the right guitar sounds.
Great evening and if you have the change to see her: GO! You wont be disappointed when you like melancholically Americana.
Afterwards it was a bit strange at the bar, Young blond girls and macho boys, mixed with a amaricanalovers, average age 35.
I soon found out why: The concert in the big hall ended at the same time: Intwine, anther shity Kean-clone. God I hate this band ( oeps other thread)
