I got a copy of this a week or two ago and am enjoying it the greatest. I can hear more keyboard lines; without the vocals the layeredness comes through, guitar parts that I didn’t hear on the regular release, etc..
I don’t torrent but could pass it on to someone who can.
This is awesome. Won’t you take me to Funky Town….
Sounds like they’re using a PONG2. 😉
Too spendy for me.
Do the Japanese SHM-CDs consist of only a clear coating, or are they actually recorded differently?
Re. premium CDs, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s Ultradisc cd releases didn’t use any dynamic range compression or equalization. MFSL made direct transfers from the original master recording to CD and the discs had a supposedly more reflective gold plated surface. For what it’s worth, the few MFSL CDs I’ve heard sounded pretty great.
No defense needed; I was kidding–the anticipation and excitement come through in the pic. Test pressing #1 has maximum Wu (in the PKD sense), right on for you.
December 17, 2012 at 9:27 am in reply to: Kennedy interviews J Mascis – Alternative Nation 1993 #139874I liked the discussion of ‘skiboarding,’ apparently still somewhat of a novelty in the early 90s. Also like the Eddie Haskell “That’s a lovely housecoat you’re wearing, Mrs. Cleaver” moment when J praises her pajamas.
Congrats! Looks like you made it to the post office parking lot before opening the package? 🙂
There’s a couple people selling tickets for cost on the Boston Craigslist.
Bon Scott with the Valentines–Love Makes Sweet Music
Al Cisneros put together an awesome compilation album, Transmissions From Sinai, for Arthur magazine a few years ago that has a J Mascis song, War, which is great, as is the whole album.
I like wild conjecture as much as the next person but this writer gives baseless claims, tenuous logic, and confabulation a bad name.
Aside from the fundamental stupidity of the article’s premise, there’s a mean-spirited wrongness throughout the piece that is a mockery of the music and music criticism itself.
By the end of the article the reader is fatigued (from wading through bad logic, lousy prose, meandering malignancy), not convinced.

It ends pretty trippy too, with the reggae sorta jam the last couple minutes of the song.
I told my friend to bring earplugs and he said he thought he had some earplugs in his luggage somewhere and I reminded him in the United States you can just buy earplugs for a dollar at a drugstore.
I got two one-line emails from him the other night:
This dinosaur jr. album is great!and
He shouldn’t let lou talk so much on stage though…Ta ha
A good friend who’s been living in Ulaanbaatar, Nepal, and Bhutan for the last 20 or so years doing climate/wildlife research just signed on for a 4 year gig in Bhutan working on snow leopard conservation. I asked him if he’d be in Hong Kong for the 10/31 Dinosaur Jr show and he said he doesn’t get to HK until November 4.
He happened to be staying a few blocks away from the Black Cat this week, and though he’s never listened to Dinosaur Jr he was down for the DC Black Cat show. As Obsequio mentioned it was sold out, but he got a ticket outside and sent me a couple of pictures of the band playing last night, looks like good times. If you saw a freak with long red hair taking pictures and enjoying himself, that was my friend John from Wilbraham.
I sent him a I Bet on Sky CD last week and the door man at the apartment he was staying at held it for 3 days so he didn’t get to hear it until after the show. He totally enjoyed the concert, had a great time, said it was “sonically opaque,” and wrote me this about the new album once he got to hear it: “It kind of sounds like that first iggy and the stooges album but without iggy. Much more melodic thrash power psychedelia.”
Hatchetface– thanks for the Premier Guitar facebook info.
Re. Premier Guitar’s picture of J’s pedalboard, Zvex’s Lo Fi Loop Junky has 5 dials at the top and 2 button foot switches (start and record) at the bottom, which the pedal on the bottom left of J’s pedalboard also has in the picture.
I’m no expert, but I’ve looked at a bunch of Zvex pedals, have played a few, and own one; off the top of my head, I don’t know of other Zvex pedals that have the 5 dials/2 switches layout that the Lo Fi Loop Junky has. It looks like a custom paint job, whatever it is.
It seems like the keyboard sounds on Almost Fare (live) are on a loop, not being played live, because in the WOW hall video J is playing guitar and in the background there’s keyboards (or guitar that sounds like keyboards) that must be on a loop, because he’s playing guitar while the “keyboard” melody is going, and which sounds great. Wild how closely he approximates the Mellotron/keyboard sounds on the album with the Pog2.
