Sympathies re. your suegra, Annastefka. It’s August, the season’s contracting, turning to fall, which is tough for everyone. A skunk took one of our chickens this week, a timely bummer. I have to go back to work tomorrow, also challenging. Being cheerful helps; hang in there!

As far as TV goes, if you get tired of the cable buffet you could watch public TV and/or dvds of something good. I’ve been watching Maigret, who is the total chit. If not on your local pbs station you can get the series on ebay. It’s in French with English subtitles–if you haven’t seen it, Maigret’s a detective, the show is set in the early 1950s or so, and the whole thing is incredibly fantastic. Bruno Cremer is the Man. He doesn’t know, doesn’t say much, is sympathetic, stoic, bien yin; the whole
s l o w pacing, camera work, great acting, sets, the feel of the past, everything is entirely awesome–check it out if you get bored/horrified of the news.

Regarding love, right on. From William Burroughs’ Last Words:

“Anyone uses the term “bleeding heart” needs a bullet in his’n. I am a bleeding heart. I bleed for lost kittens in hopeless alleys, the neglected, rejected of the disintegrating societal house of cards.

        Be there a man

        with soul so dead

        never has throwed

        himself on a bed

        in aching spasms of

        “If only–“

        “Why didn’t I–“

        “Why did I–“

        Grief like that hurts”

Thurston Moore’s Chelsea Light Moving uses the last lines of this journal (his last written words) for one of their new songs, Burroughs–

“Love. What is it? Most natural painkiller what there is. LOVE.”

          Empire2, thanks for your reply.

Here’s the quote from the article:

          < <<<>>>>>>

I guess ‘mostly favoured’ can mean anything you want it to. I hear keyboards on other albums, so don’t get the ‘quite a departure’ part but it’s no biggie. Maybe the whole album sounds new and different to this interviewer and the piano parts just stand out more.

          You wrote:

“Also guitar solos are present but not as big as before !? – still great but no alone / I don’t want go there type action(not a bad thing “

To me, that is sort of moving towards ‘a bad thing’–I love I Don’t Want to Go There and Alone type action and was initially a bit disappointed at the short song lengths listed for this album. My attention span is intact and I want to hear *lots* of guitar playing, esp. expansive, boiling, expeditionary soloing. “Watch the Corners,” or at least what I’ve heard of it through computer speakers and my phone, is pretty incredible even without sprawling solos, though it seems the guitar gets cut short on this song (fades out), when I would’ve been good for at least a few more minutes of extemporizing.

Thanks for your thoughts on the album; looking forward to hearing it soon.

Empire, thanks for the all info. How’re y’all so up on the lowdown (and how’d YOU get the album so early)? 😉

It wouldn’t spoil the anticipation/surprise for me to hear what you think about the new album. Do tell. What about I Bet on Sky reminds you of a Fog album? Keyboards? I read and enjoyed the interview posted today but was a little confused by the author saying the keyboards on I Bet on Sky are a departure from prior albums; More Light has hella keyboards.

Do you have a vinyl copy? What’s the back cover artwork like?

You can also try yakaz, a craigslist ad compilation site. I typed ‘yakaz j mascis jazzmaster’ into google and yakaz has several CL listings for both the Squier and the CIJ signature models:

Empire2, if you like covers that sound different from the original, check out Schlong’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album, Tumours.

Someone posted the Tumours 7″ on youtube, ‘s great:

They were big on covers; Wheel in the Sky was a classic.

I like it! It would work well with a video of surfers

Yes, and/or a David Lynch movie; reminds me a little of Sleepwalk.

                    Obsequio–

In case you haven’t scored your Fuzz Munchkin yet, my friend got his Fuzz Munchkin by liking Tym Guitars, following their webpage and facebook page, and asking them when they were going to be going up for sale. My friend sells and buys stuff on ebay and is into the whole limited edition/auction endorphin thing. Tym told him what day they’d go up for sale and gave him a window of time they’d be sold and my friend kept checking Tym’s facebook page for updates that day. You’ll be able to get one if you do the same. Have your credit card info ready, etc. as if you take too long to enter your shipping/credit card info you’ll get bounced out of the purchase window or whatever it’s called. Good luck!

                      Thanks Obsequio–

I think you’re right that the Thurston Moore model Jazzmaster has antiquity pickups but I think the Lee Ranaldo signature model has humbucking pickups with chrome covers, not the white soapbar pickup covers. Someone who lives around  ten miles away  from me was selling their personally signed Lee Ranaldo Jazzmaster on Craigslist a few weeks ago and I was gawking it, it’s a real nice guitar, though I imagine it doesn’t have the traditional Jazzmaster tone.

I hear ya re. emulating tone, not playing style, right on. I can’t do either but like all the overtones and feel of a Jazzmaster; playing one is a buzz.

Thanks also for the advices re. finding a JMJM on CL. I found both my electric guitars on Craigslist; the Hello Kitty Squier is an Affinity series and is about the best $100 I ever spent. It stays in tune forever and plays great, no rough fret edges or bridge issues  like other Squier Affinity series I’ve played.

I had a silver sparkle made in China Jagmaster with dual humbuckers that was cheap, sounded/felt good, and was  fun to play but it wouldn’t stay  in tune. I brought it to Michael Dolan and while he improved it some, even he couldn’t fix it. Also had a Japanese Vista series Jagmaster that was great but  I couldn’t deal with the short scale neck. The ’62 reissue is the nicest guitar I’ve ever played or owned; I’m not worthy.

I don’t often see the J Mascis signature JM on Craigslist locally; when they do come up for sale they’re usually $800-1000, what a used AVRI Jazzmaster costs. I played a friend’s Squier Telecaster recently and it had such killer tone and played so nice the next guitar I get’ll probably be a cheap Tele, but I’ll keep keeping an eye out for a J Mascis signature model.

Thanks for the info Obsequio. Wonder why they put a strat style pickup in the J Mascis signature model (extras lying around the factory?). Doesn’t the Lee Ranaldo signature Jazzmaster have humbuckers?

I play a 62 reissue Jazzmaster with stock pickups and a Squier Hello Kitty strat with the stock single humbucker and like them both a lot, different strokes…If I had the dollars I’d buy a J Mascis signature Jazzmaster, awesome looking guitar.

@Obsequio Do the made in Japan J Mascis signature Jazzmasters come with humbuckers?

I could be wrong but I seem to remember reading somewhere that he replaced his signature guitar’s stock pickups with Lollar pickups (?)

I’d never seen the video for Thumb before. It’s like 2001: A Space Odyssey told from the perspective of the tapirs; really great.
