The person with the video camera got shut down after a few songs. (I think mainly just cuz he didn’t clear it ahead of time.)
The show was superb though. I also could not believe it was going to be at Smith’s when it was announced. Real tiny place that always tends to have terrific sound, this time aided by a good soundman (who is also a great guitar player.)
The encore was just two songs, Wagon and Sludgefeast. The Sludgefeast just blew me away (literally, as I was standing right in front of J for the the last half of the show). They really have this one down now. Overall, with every song, there was such a huge improvement from the first show of the summer tour that I was at (the 40 Watt show in Athens). You could definitely see more cohesiveness and a natural chemistry.
Other songs that I can remember right now were-
Budge!, Everybody Let’s Me Down, Ammaring, yes- a 10 minute Alone that was fantastic, Sameday, Freedom (this song is perfect for Dave’s playing), Get Me, I think we heard If That’s How It’s Gotta Be, they opened with The Lung. There were others but I’m going on little sleep and ringing ears. They did play a song they had yet to play but I can’t remember what it was this morning. Anyway, if you live on the East Coast, don’t miss a show.
The audio bit torrent of this show will follow within the next couple of days….
Yep SG, Bill Doss is the lead guy for The Sunshine Fix and he was also in Olivia Tremor Control. They just put out a new cd ‘Green Imagination’ a couple of weeks ago if you’re interested in checking them out before the shows.
Thanks for getting the show out there!
Definitely check out The Tom Collins if you liked Kyle’s style. They are a fantastic 3-piece band. I’ll try to remember to post a bit torrent link of their live stuff soon. If you live in GA, come check them out at AthFest on Fri night. http://www.athfest.com
And while I’m plugging away, check out one of Dave’s (the bass player with the Fog) other side projects The Stockholm Syndrome. They are fairly new (started out last year as 2 guys and now have a full band). The guy doing most of the vocals and right now, most of the songwriting, is Jerry Joseph and is by far, one of my favorite songwriters. I think people here will probably appreciate his style. Y’all seem like a hip bunch:-) I saw the first 3 shows of the US debut of the new lineup and highly recommend this band to you guys. They are definitely not afraid to rock and J’s fans can appreciate that I think. http://www.stockholmsyndromeband.com or check out Jerry’s songwriting at http://www.jerryjoseph.com (under lyrics). They’re touring the US this summer. Check it out.
Just trying to turn some folks on to some other good music…there is soooo much out there!
FYI: The 40 Watt show was also videotaped by the band’s management.
Patrick, I know they didn’t do that song at the 40 watt. I was just asking if he ever uses those specific lyrics in another song as I know I heard that line at the 40 watt- but obviously, no they didn’t do ‘set us free’ that night. i’ll have to go back and listen (again) to the show and see where he uses it, as I’m positive he used that line in a song that night…at least, i think i am:)
thanks for the help though.
In response to the "Set Us Free" question…does J ever use those lyrics in other songs? The reason I ask is because he used those exact lyrics in a song during the 40 watt show last month but it wasn’t set us free. I know there is a lot of "free/freedom" usage, but this was specifically those words…
Anyway, these reviews are making me wish we had just one more east coast date again. I would love to relive that 40 watt show over another time…completely rocked.
It’s great how J’s lyrics still resonate with me today, just as they did 10 years ago being a high school misfit.
June 2, 2004 at 2:24 pm in reply to: Just got an email that Dave Schools is playing in NYC tonigh #102309And they are totally kickass so go see them when they come back around this summer. http://www.stockholmsyndromeband.com
I agree with everyone. The show was fantastic. I was already a fan of all 3 musicians, but I had no idea it would be THAT good. It completely went above and beyond my expectations musically. I could tell by the looks on the faces of almost everyone there that I wasn’t the only one feeling like that as well.
The comments already made re: Freedom are so true. It really worked well. What else is new? was really stretched out and by god, the jam in the middle was craziness. J’s solos were incredible throughout the entire night and the chemistry between him and Dave was a real treat to watch. Not to mention, I have no idea how Kyle kept up but he did exceptionally well. That was one damn fine band if I ever saw one. By the time they hit the Sludgefeast at the end, my jaw was hanging on the ground.
You west coast folks are truly lucky to get the rest of these dates. I feel so fortunate to have caught this one. I saw The Fog tour with Mike Watt in 2000 at the Double Door, which was my first time actually getting to see J live, and that show blew me away. This one took the cake and tops off my list of some of my favorite shows ever. (Even though the solo show in January at the Caledonia was not too shabby either.)
And 2 days later, there is still a buzz in my ears…
Hey y’all…
I am personally extremely excited about the collaboration between J & Dave Schools for this project. Like I said in another forum here, Dave is an amazing bass player. Since everyone seems to be a bit clueless as to his work, besides with Widespread Panic, who has toured since the mid-80s, he has done work on tons of other projects. Brute is the band that combines Vic Chesnutt and Widespread Panic and I would venture to guess that a lot of people here would like their work. See albums "nine high a pallet" or "cobalt". GREAT records. Dave also does some really cool experimental stuff with a gig called Slang, check it out. They have a new album coming out very soon which will also include vocals by Vic Chesnutt and some other guests. http://www.slang1.com/main.html”>http://www.slang1.com/main.html Then one of my other favorite projects of Dave’s is a band called Acetate who just released their first album, it kicks ass. (3 piece, with Kevin Sweeney of some cool Athens bands called "The Sunshine Fix" and "Hayride, and with Ben Mize formerly of the Counting Crows). Anyway, hopefully that gives you a better perspective of Dave’s ability to mix it up with a variety of different acts…And he is a fan of J’s so that is the most important ingredient I think.
The drummer for this show at the 40 watt is Kyle Spence. He is a kickass drummer! Check out The Tom Collins band for more info on him and some song samples…thetomcollins.com
Basically, can you tell I’m extremely excited for this show?
As for Mike Watt, if you didn’t know, he is doing a tour with the secondmen in May so if you live in Atlanta, come check him out at the EARL on 5/13.
What a kickass month of music down here in the south!
Yes, I agree with Anna that Kyle Spence is an amazing drummer. He looks young but I think he is actually early 30s or something. His style is very reminiscent of Bonham’s style…extremely talented. If you have not heard The Tom Collins, check it out.
As for the person that was questioning the appearance of Dave Schools, I have to say that I think it will be a gret fit. Dave is an amazing bassist and his style very much fits the bill in my opinion. If you don’t like Widespread Panic for whatever reason, check out the gazillion other projects he has partaken in over the years. I challenge anyone to tell me that man can’t play bass;)
Anyway, no worries, tapes will be ran of this show and will be distributed the same way the January solo show was, via Sharing the Groove bit torrent.
I can’t wait! We sure are lucky to get two shows in the span of 4 months…
Great, thanks for the setlist!! Hope y’all enjoy it…
Oh yeah, btw, the show was GREAT. Very packed. I felt like I was in 11th grade again listening to J (had only seen him play with the Fog and Mike Watt a few years back). So glad we made the drive from ATL on the cold rainy night it was. Opener, The Tom Collins, was great as well. http://www.thetomcollins.com
Look for the show soon,
JayneHey y’all,
My friend did indeed record the Athens show. Another friend of ours is going to be putting it up on SharingTheGroove.org in a few days (today is Wednesday). I saw that some here don’t know how to use it; it’s pretty easy if you have a burner so read up! Hopefully once one person here does download it, then can get it to others on the message board that are looking. We didn’t have a good grasp of song names though so hopefully you guys can help with that once it goes up.
Thanks!
