I don’t think I would classify J. as "derivitive" either. Yes, everybody making music is, in some sense, derivitive, but relative to other musicians/bands, not at all. When I hear J., guitar or singing…the makeup of the song….you can tell it’s him. In a sense, J. is like Willie Nelson. Nobody in the world sounds like them…..singing, guitar or songwriting.
Yep. J’s like Willie Nelson.
1) Indie Compilation by me that includes Modest Mouse, Yo La Tengo, Grandaddy, Sugar, Built To Spill and Husker Du. Before I came to this site I hadn’t listened to any of these bands. Thanks folks. Thanks a LOT. "Cowboy Dan," "Sugarcube," "Car," "Dramamine," and "Interstate 8" are absolutely killer.
2) Lyle Lovett compilation. Seriously, if you haven’t given this guy a listen, do yourself a favor and do so. "Creeps Like Me," "Friend of the Devil," "L.A. County," or "Skinny Legs." Lyle put on the best show i’ve EVER seen. Brass, cello, extensive percussion section and the usual suspects. Everybody is decked out in Armani suits. Usually has a group of black backup singers. AWSOME date concert. Fellas, you WILL get some luvin’. And notice I spelled "luvin’" with a "u." Know what I mean??
3) "More Light" It’s been a fantastic summer album and I bet dollars to donuts it’s a hell of a fall/winter album too. We’ll see. It’s funny that many of the older posters use the term "album" while the word ain’t even in some of the younger folks’ vocabulary, even though there isn’t THAT much difference in age.
4) Wilco’s "Being There" Jeff Tweedy is very cool. Does a great version of "Froggy Went A Courtin’," but it’s not on the album…..errrrrr…..CD.
5) Blazin’ It compilation CD. Bob Dylan, Wilco, Son Volt, Jayhawks, Willie Nelson and Steve Earle.
6) The Very Best of Otis Redding. What can I say…..I gotta new girlfriend. This al….uh….CD is a big favorite of hers. If you wanna get a cool CD to listen to on a date, this would be it.
7) Soundgarden’s "Badmotorfinger." I am man and I hate Oprah Winfrey. Grrrrrrrr.
8) Mike Johnson "Year of Mondays" This is a great "rainy day" album. We have had one rainy day in the last two months here in Tulsa. I play this over and over, hoping it rains. Something tells me it’s not working.
I’d have to say i’m a solid 1. I’m not scared AT ALL. I have no doubt that this planet will ever see alien life. After all, if you were an alien, would you stop at a planet that’s home to Rosie O’ Donnell, Mariah Carey and those new f******n Taco Bueno commercials??
Welcom RR….if yer a chick, I bet your hot. And if yer a dood, you KNOW a bunch of hot chicks. I always wanted to go to Brazil…..

Did anyone else think the heading said "Trouble watching porno videos??"

For the love of Jebus?? Coooooool…..
Heh….I used to go see the Dixie Chicks quite a bit when they would play small clubs in Dallas. They had a different singer back then and I was kinda hot for her. And hey, at least all of them can actually PLAY instruments….banjo AND fiddle. That said, I never listen to their music…..
I think there’s even a Dixie Chicks knock off band….Daisy or something like that.
Ohbakaybee….no more DChicks.
Jebus voted for Dramamine……GREAT song.
Right on about SV’s Trace. It’s a GREAT road album. In that same vein, I like to trip to UT’s "Anodyne," Wilco’s "Being There" and Willie Nelson’s Greatest Hits.

Hey thanks….oddly enough….Tulsa has a pretty good lil’ Indy shop where I bet I can find one or all of those you listed. I’ve got a 14 hour road trip coming up at the end of this month, so I need some new, good CD’s.
I’m off to work….so i’ll check out the MM website there. Uhhhh…I mean, when I get home….AFTER work. Yea.
Okay fellers….I know Modest Mouse is a somewhat "controversial" topic here with people either really liking them or really hating them. I downloaded "Dramamine" and reallllllly dig that song. My goddess-partner quipped the other day "goddamnit….could you play just ONE other song!!??" Sooooo…..i’m going to pick up a MM CD…give me the names of a couple I should definately have.
P.S. I think I might take a short trip to the OhKaySea (read: Oklahoma City) Sept. 22 to catch the show.
Dooood….Nanci Griffith is very cool. Her sound is pretty polished. I actually dig Gillian Welch quite a bit better….her sound is more haunting and lonely. Thumbs up though….

I voted for the Stones for lack of a better category. I truly hear TONS of classic rock in J.’s guitar sound…and I dont mean KZZZ’s seven billionth spinning of "Hold Me." It may be the fuzzy, warm, distortion or maybe its the "album" oriented music rather than "single" oriented crap. Whatever it is I hear just as much Hendrix as anything else……
