heh heh… This is exactly why I don’t buy my books until at least a week into the semester (sometimes two, but the used books are definately gone by then.)
I’m constantly surprised by how many teachers tell me I need some expensive book(s) only to base the class completely on lecture. The book being for ‘extended reading of interest.’
Its not uncommon at all for me to only buy a single book within a semester…
Well, this is my last week on break, I go back Monday.
Yeah, the highschool thing will wear off after your freshmen year when you realize all the other little freedoms you have…
Such as not having class until late afternoon or night, the fact that most teachers don’t care if you skip a class (some do though, be careful. ). And most importantly, that you only have to be there an average of 12 – 15 hours a week. Highschool comes out to like 35 hours a week… You just cut your schedule by roughly 20 hours…
I realize you’ve already got your schedule for this semester, but I highly recommend that you give yourself at least an hour of freetime in the middle of your schedule each day, you’ll be gald you did. You can use it to take care of things or just kick back, grab a bite to eat, meet some women…
Thus ends Mattman’s freshman survival course part 1. I’m sure many of the others here will be more than glad to add to it…
Here’s some more:
From some research I’ve done, it seems that Compaq stores the BIOS information on the harddrive instead of a flashROM chip like most other mobos use. I think they’re referred to as ‘softpaqs’.
If f10 lets you into the BIOS, hopefully there will be a utility that detects and properly sets up a new HD, so keep an eye out for something like that.
Ah ha! (Not the 80’s band. )
I did some searching, found This thread in some crappy forum. Looks similar to your situation.
Hmm… If your 30GB drive was reported as 7.5, then you may have an older BIOS that can’t support over 8GB… I’m not absolutely sure about this, but if it is the case you will have to see if Compaq has an update for it.
I took a quick look at the Compaq Website, it has a support page where you select your model # and it’ll supposedly get you any current files availible. It may be worth a try.
Careful when flashing though. It’s best to do it from a clean DOS boot, no config.sys or autoexec.bat.
Well, any news on your new HD, Jeremiah? Did you manage to get it working… You’ve got me on this project now, so no giving up…
Hmm.. Most computers have a little message that pops up after start that tells you to hit a certain key to get into bios. It should go, video bios > mobo bios w/ POST (power on self test) during which you should see something like "press ___ for setup" usually its the delete key, but I know that most big PC companies like Compaq, Dell, etc change it for some reason…
Is the drive still in the machine? Try removing it first…
Oh, did you set the jumpers on the back of your new and old drives..?
What drives are in your machine now (HDs and CDROMs) and which IDE channels is each on..?
Did you see your drive when you tried to access it from DOS? ie when you entered ‘D:’
I don’t know if you can get a list of drives… If you used the boot disk I mentioned, it should’ve auto-detected your CDROMs, so keep trying letters… Your main HD should be C: and your new on should be D:, assuming that you only have 2 HD’s including the new one… Put disks in your CDROMs, type ‘D:’ and then type ‘dir’ (hitting enter after each…) if dir gives you a listing of the files on one of you CD’s then DOS isn’t detecting your drive, if you get a blank disk, then that should be your new HD…
Let me know if you need help with fdisk… I gotta go take care of something real quick. I’ll be back within a hour… (maybe sooner.)
Its best to do it from DOS… Does DOS give it a drive letter? Windows may not if it isn’t formatted, but DOS should. If not then there’s another problem…
If I were you, I’d do this from a boot disk. Use the boot disk option under ‘Add/Remove programs’ in your control panel. That’ll make a disk w/ all the old DOS files such as format, fdisk, scandisk, etc… Very handy to have one lying around. Have you used fdisk before?
Is it formatted?
Well, if you’re getting a keyboard error when trying to get into bios, try waiting an extra second or two before hitting the key.
You said f2 or esc… Do the bios instructions say you can use either? I’ve never seen a bios w/ 2 access buttons, but then I haven’t dealt w/ a Compaq before…
Are you trying to add this drive as a second drive or are you replacing your current one?
As far as flashing to a new one goes, you’ll have to see if Compaq has an updated one on their website. You’d probably need your PC’s model number…
Anyway, flashing a new bios is a last resort kind of thing. If we can solve the problem without it then its not necessary. Bios updates aren’t like drivers. They don’t tend to increase performance, just fix problems.
What kind of motherboard (henseforth refered to as a mobo ) are you using?
Have you tried flashing to the latest bios?
When and where are you getting the keyboard error?
Bad-computer-mojo(tm) indeed…
Jaron, you assume a great deal… We’ll just say that I tolerate you a little more than Jeremiah and leave it at that…
An Jeremiah’s a helluva nice guy, he just doesn’t respond to annoyances as well as I do… Really, I should probably go into politics…
