I was at CBGB almost every weekend from 1978 – 1988. It was a great club, but times change. If the world can live without A7, the Pyramid, Great Gildersleeves, the Peppermint Lounge, Rock Hotel and Max’s, it can certainly do without the lame CBGB of today.

It seems to me that the people complaining never really got into the original band (even though what they did led to the J stuff they may like). That leads to threads like the one complaining that they only did songs from the first three albums. Only a fool would post something like that. All three of the guys were very nice when I met them in NC (especially Lou!), so anyone name calling or complaining is not really a fan, doesn’t really understand their music, or is really just some asshole whose up close, starfucker moment with J didn’t work out because everyone saw right through him. How can you expect logic from people who complain about volume at a Dino show? It’s fucking ridiculous!

The Meat Puppets dude? Yeah, more likely he beat up a junkie who stole his share of the bundle! If waistoid could even beat his way out of a paper bag, that is.

          I love your "pigs" reference! Everyone sing together: It’s 1969, etc…! :P

I don’t have fond memories of HD. They would come through with some songs that had the combination of melody and noise that was ear pleasing, most times it was plain noise. I saw them a few times and was underwhelmed. They were a critics band if you ask me. I wasn’t into the gay subtleties they stuck everywhere they could, either. They sure jumped out of the closet, though, huh? I don’t find their stuff as listenable as other stuff from that time. Forget them, it’s too bad we will never get a Minutemen reunion (though they would probably have never split, so there would be no need for a reunion).

Butthead: Huh, huh, he said nadmembers.

Beavis: Yeah, heh, heh. Is that a mutant combination of your nads and your member? Heh, heh.

Butthead: Huh, huh, you said member.

You have to remember that Pavement was a raw act back when they toured with Gary. I saw them many times, but I remember a show at Maxwell’s (NJ) where we were smoking a joint in front of the stage as they were getting ready to play, and Gary came out from his kit and smoked with us (we had done it previously) until Spiral shoved him back towards the drums. They would play something like Debris Slide and it was like you were at an Agnostic Front show!

It looked stupid. But, at that time, you had so many people transitioning out of hardcore towards this "new scene", I suppose it was hard to break old habits for some. It was a great time in music, the original punk/hardcore scene developing into something greater and more lasting musically.

As an old guy of 40 on the subject, I have to say that it annoys me, but I slammed (as we called it) at hardcore shows in ’82 to around ’85, so it doesn’t bother me. I just move away. When the bands first started, people slammed at shows like Dino, Buttholes, Jesus Lizard, Cows, Pavement, etc. It was a little weird to me, but the music is HARD, and it’s no less ridiculous than somebody "crowd surfing" at a Dave Matthews Band show. Once hardcore and metal "crossed over" around ’85 and slamming became moshing, I was done. From what I’ve seen, they aren’t slamming, moshing or anything like it anymore. It looks like a bunch of spastic kickboxers trying to elbow each other in the face. That’s a long way from picking up the guy that fell down next to you.
