Amen, brutha! This is not for all the vintage-ites, but for those of you trying to do what you can with what you got: Check out the Zoom 505 multi-effects processor (I think musician’sfriend.com still has it for under $80!) You can create almost ANY sound with the thing, it’s really amazing. Heck, if you don’t like it, I know you can turn around and sell it on eBay for at LEAST what you paid for it. I was skeptical, but bought one (I’m not a poor college student, but an "old guy" with a wife, 3 kids, 3 cats, a dog, and a mortgage – amounts to the same thing I guess…a wallet more often empty than not!) and I love it. It’s cheap plastic case belies the great circuitry underneath, and that makes it better for home recording than gigging, but it sounds great. Just don’t stomp the foot pedals too hard! I’d like to remind everyone not to get too wrapped up in vintage equipment for the sake of vintage equipment. It’s all about sound… And though most big name vintage stuff is of top quality, it doesn’t mean that that newer, more affordible stuff isn’t going to get you the sound you want.
I have a ’68 Deluxe Reverb Amp (first year of the silver faces), but that’s the only vintage thing I own.
My main guitar, the Tele is a ’94 Am Std. which is the USA made model. It’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. It gave me exactly the sound I was looking for.
As for my favorite distortion pedal (and people always look at me funny when I tell them this… Until they hear it ) It’s a $30, plastic cased, Rocktek pedal that says "DISTORTION" in plain white letters on a pink battery cover. I bought it from a guy at a flea market. Its probably the cheapest dist pedal on the market, but I absolutly love it. I’ve bought a couple of other distortion pedals that are supposedly better, higher quality ones, and yet I always go back to the RockTek…
I’ll still defend Mexican Strats though (I own one after all). The electronics suck, but they play pretty well. They’re made of Poplar which has almost exactly the same sonic properties as the more expensive Alder. If you put in some decent pickups and tuners, and set it up properly, you’ve got a really good sounding guitar for not much $$$.
I’d like to have a nice vintage collection one day, but for now, I’m a poor college student…

The following is from an article on the NME website (http://www.nme.com/newsdesk/19990120133903news.html”>http://www.nme.com/newsdesk/19990120133903news.html)- a short interview with Lou where he talks about once wanting to take revenge on J. What the hell’s he talking about? What happened between them?
What song describes you best?
"’How Does It Feel To Feel’ by The Creation."What is heaven?
"Having three cats asleep on my chest."What is hell?
"My cats being hit by a car. No, my house collapsing on top of me and the cats during an earthquake in LA. And the cats eating me."What’s your earliest memory?
"Pounding on the screen door, screaming because my mother was leaving me with a babysitter. I was a mama’s boy."Who is your all-time hero?
"Lemmy. Because he can take so much speed and still be so much cooler than Lou Reed."What’s the worst trouble you’ve been in?
"I never really get into trouble. I always just get real close, like with the police searching the van when we have contraband, and it never really happens."Who was the first love of your life?
"Heather Love, in first grade."What’s your greatest talent?
"Having patience with myself."Upon whom would you most like to exact revenge? Why? How?
"I don’t really have anyone now. I did, a long time ago, dearly want to get revenge on J Mascis. But that was a lot of wasted mental energy."What’s your most treasured possession?
"Probably my Korg bass synth. It’s between that and my Casio guitar. They cost a hundred bucks a piece, and they’re getting harder to find."What have you most regretted doing while drunk?
"Continuing to drink."Can you cook?
"I can make egg sandwiches, that’s it."What’s the best advice you’ve received?
"Always follow at three car lengths."Can you read music?
"No."If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?
"I’d probably follow random people around and find out what they do. I just find the minute details of people’s lives fascinating. I’m a bit of a voyeur."What are your final three wishes?
"For people to listen to my music, for the screws on the bridge of my guitar to stay in for another show and never to get a flat tyre on an off-ramp."

From Maximum Guitar Magazine, July 1997 in reference to photo#5 (a picture of his ’57 Blue Fender Esquire w/ silver pickguard) on page 39:
" I bought this Esquire for $2000, the most I’ve ever paid for a guitar."

i agree with Tthomas, you can get a nice vintage guitar for about $2000, but that probably out of most people’s price range. i didn’t mean to say that the stuff was unavailable, its that the amount of collectors and the general interest in vintage stuff has driven the prices up. i dunno, maybe its just inflation. but hey, if you are willing to drop $2000+, you should be pretty satisfied with what you get.

As far as i know, j uses 2 gold tops…
one is a standard w p90’s
the other is ancient with the trapeze type bridge fitted to it (very unusual for this type of guitar) it’s rumoured that it was one of the first 50 les pauls ever made….
I have been following this thread of conversation closely and you all are talking about gourmet food in front of a starving man here. I now have the biggest JONES going on. My gear sucks! I have always been the type to "make do". I’ve got 2 Epiphones, some headphone amps, the single cheapest (but I love it) digital multi-effects processor on the planet, and a DOD dist pedal, and that’s about it! Despite the fact that I still major jollies when I play/record, I must now think about how I am going to acquire some real J-esque gear!
Thanks for nothing everyone!
Chris http://www.jamalong.comhey again…I’m sorry if I’m writing too much
but I just want to say that there are plenty of good deals on great gear out there.I just won a vintage electro-harmonix poly chorus pedal for 128$ on ebay yesterday.
also if you go to gbase.com (not an advertisement) you can find any guitar ever.
I have a lot of vintage stuff, but I have been a collector/player since 1994. I have a 1966 Jaguar, a ’78 telecaster deluxe, a 70’s coronado, a american standard strat, 2 60’s mustangs (severely beaten), a mosrite hollowbody, a hagstrom III, and various 100$ teisco’s…also I’m working on getting a 1980 Les Paul Pro with P-90’s because I want some gibsons…
if you want cool vintage guitars, you should look into old teisco’s because they are super cheap but sound very cool.
I don’t think it is impossible to get nice old guitars, and I think that 2,000$ for a custom colored jazzmaster is a fine price, 5 years ago they were about 1400-1800$
amps are where I don’t think its worth getting vintage. because new mesa boogies sound very good, and are quieter and more reliable then 60s marshalls. also the ampeg super jets are just as good as any vintage amps, I think all new fenders are crud, but budda amps sound better then blackface fenders.
I don’t think that if you want something, you shouldn’t have it, because you’ll just go on wanting it, and it will eat at you.
I think if you have a dream you should go for it.even if it means eating on 20$ a week.
//////////Tt.Seems nostalgia for the 1990s is kicking in before the year 2000 is even over — a sure sign of just how quickly we are consuming our own culture. Such pining for the recent past is evident on More Light, an album that exudes a comfortable retro vibe, even though it’s barely been four years since J Mascis disbanded indie-rock staple Dinosaur Jr. Simply put, this is the best thing the reclusive Mascis has put his name to since Dino Jr.’s classic Green Mind. It features all the trademarks that made the band so great: Mascis’s fuzzed-out guitars, croaking vocals and anxiety-ridden lyrics. Added to the mix is the intelligent use of keyboards, which push the riffs along rather than becoming a focal point. Mascis also proves that he is still one of the best and most underrated guitarists in rock, with his sludgy riffing, and squealing, Neil Young-inspired solos. The songwriting throughout is strong, especially on the two tracks bookending the album, "Same Day" and "More Light," both of which stand up against anything in Dinosaur’s back catalog. On More Light, Mascis doesn’t stray far from his signature sound, but when you are as good as he is, you don’t need to. Listening to this album is like catching up with an old friend.
