Seems nostalgia for the 1990s is kicking in before the year 2000 is even over — a sure sign of just how quickly we are consuming our own culture. Such pining for the recent past is evident on More Light, an album that exudes a comfortable retro vibe, even though it’s barely been four years since J Mascis disbanded indie-rock staple Dinosaur Jr. Simply put, this is the best thing the reclusive Mascis has put his name to since Dino Jr.’s classic Green Mind. It features all the trademarks that made the band so great: Mascis’s fuzzed-out guitars, croaking vocals and anxiety-ridden lyrics. Added to the mix is the intelligent use of keyboards, which push the riffs along rather than becoming a focal point. Mascis also proves that he is still one of the best and most underrated guitarists in rock, with his sludgy riffing, and squealing, Neil Young-inspired solos. The songwriting throughout is strong, especially on the two tracks bookending the album, "Same Day" and "More Light," both of which stand up against anything in Dinosaur’s back catalog. On More Light, Mascis doesn’t stray far from his signature sound, but when you are as good as he is, you don’t need to. Listening to this album is like catching up with an old friend.

i like the art work for the Where’d U Go single (the two hands holding the weird looking bat-type thing). Black and white, simple, and leaves room for more text.

I disagree with kracked lung, you don’t need 25,000 to get J.’s tone. unless you are talking about recording gear as well, because al you really need is about 10-12 thousand dollars.

4 thousand: guitars
1.5 thousand: effects
5 thousand: amps
.5 thousand: new pickups, misc.

but can we please stop hearing about people’s boss pedals, and epiphone’s and mexican strats. it’s like, yeah fella’s we know you got ’em! where my boys at with jazzmasters and memory man extravaganza!!!
and please

Well….I don’t much care for that move, considering i’m partial to the Tree’s venue. I’ve seen many acts there and it’s always been a great place to see bands. The Gypsy Tea Room opened after I left, but i’m pretty sure they’re both owned and run by the same folks. The only people I can recall playing at the GTR are Steve Earl and Son Volt. Two of my favorites…but a far cry from J.

Anyway, thanks for the rundown of the Cotton Club…and the venue update.

hi all,

I’m w/j nov 23 through almost xmas. one month in the u.s. and
one month in europe. I think we’ll be a test run at the winooski gig.
pretty scary but I’m really into playing w/j. I dig these pliers too,
we’ll make up lost gigs in the spring w/another tour.

i doubt too many people have vintage stuff. vintage guitars have gotten really expensive and are snatched up by collectors and pro musicians. you can still get this stuff if you are willing to spend several thousand dollars, but who has the $$ for that?

i used to keep my eye out for hot deals on amps/gadgets, but i never found that 1953 Les Paul at a garage sale for $100.

It looks like the Trees gig has been changed to the Gypsy Tea Room? I have not heard any more details but I updated the dates: http://www.freakscene.net/tourdates/index.shtml

And I’m back to tha old school…

As for sub info, you got it in one, jeremiah.

Address is majordomo@blank.net, body of the e-mail should read:

subscribe dinosaur <your>

(no brackets, of course)

Now I just wonder if anybody’s left over there. Oh, and the listserv server seems to be running VERY slowly – like 2 hours between sending a message and getting it back. It used to be something like 10 minutes.

That is so cool. I notice he has a few of the "Dinosaur Jr" images posted on the site, but not all of them. Some of those are very disturbing, which is what I like about it.
One of my favorite artists whose art can be seen on display at the Chicago Art Museum is Ivan Albrecht (sp). He was and old guy, but his artwork was very dark, disturbing and edgy. You all should search for and check out his stuff if you can find it. If I can find anything on the web, I’ll post the URL in the proper forum here.

Your question strikes me a funny, but only because had it not been for Dino, I wouldn’t know who the heck Mike Johnson is. Of course, that’s just me! I have intended on checking out his solo efforts but have never gotten around to it.
Mike played on four Dino albums that I am aware of: Whatever’s Cool With Me, Where You Been, Without A Sound, and Hand It Over.
