Jeremiah, you are too good. This site is killer. Don’t spend a whole lot of money trying to sound like J! I am not a recoding star or even a paid musician, just an amateur inspired by the likes of J. My gear (guitar aside) cost less than $100 smackers, including digital recording software. Check out my site to see what I’m talking about: http://www.jamalong.com It ain’t SOTA, but it gets me off just the same. Excuse the sound quality if you check out my MP3’s, I wanted the downloads small.

Here is J’s setup according to GuitarGeek.com

If you can find it, pick up the July 97 issue of Maximum Guitar magazine. I recently picked one up on eBay cheap. It has lots of info on J’s gear as well as many GREAT photos. He has so much stuff, it’d be kinda hard to list it all in a post. Maybe if I have more time later I’ll give it a whack anyway.

It’s possible that some of the new tunes may be on Napster only when certain users are online. I don’t know. I have downloaded tons of music from Napster, but sort of quit it a few months ago. The coolest thing I downloaded (besides J with the funky homosapien from the Judement Night soundtrack) was Dave Grohl doing Everlong acoustically on Howard Stern. I would have downloaded J’s tunes and would also then have bought the CD’s. I haven’t always done so (i.e. I downloaded the new Steely Dan album in total but never bought the CD) but I feel strongly that J’s integrity (not to mention the legalities) merits him every damn penny he can earn. Does anyone know what J’s opinions on Napster and the whole MP3 thing are? I think it rocks and I also think Metallica are a bunch of sell-out pussies, especially Little Lars.

Damnit, Jeremiah, why can’t I delete my own post? Now I look like a stupid foreigner who can’t even spell Chigaco… I mean, Chicago…

I have Tony Bennett Unplugged on DVD and although ‘St. James Infirmary’ is on their I think all the J footage must have been cut out of it because I can’t remember seeing him. I’ll look again to see if I can see/hear him. I did read somewhere before that J has a copy of this where he is in it so maybe it will surface here before too long

                            Thanks RuBrick,

I said shielded, but I meant filtered. I was in a hurry that day. The battery idea sounds alright, but I’m hoping to do away with batteries all together. I don’t mind a little hum, but this unfiltered AC adapter I attempted to use was rediculous.

I’ve read a bit more on this problem and have found some information saying that I need to isololate my ground lines or something (I have to go back and look at the article, it’s been a couple weeks…)

What I really need to do, though, is bone up on my theory. I took an electronics class my first year of highschool… I thought the theory stuff was really boring back then. Now I wish I had paid more attention (see my signature below about paying attention.)

                            Thanks again,

I don’t think you can shield an adapter. It’s basically a power conversion transformer. All you can do is change the shape of the magnetic field that surrounds it so it does not mess up the signal in any of the wires your signal goes trhough. And you have this power wire going into your effect where the signal is.

A filter circuit might be possible.

But the easyist solution would be to buy a couple of rechargable 9v bateries and always have a charged one handy becuase they don’t last a long as the regular batteries. Maybe in this age of powerful nicads there is an even better solution. Like you could power everything with a battery and avoid all the hum. but you may find that the hum adds to you sound.

I have been reading a book titled AMPS!. There are amp builders that seek out special transformers becuase they effect the sound of the amp. Aspen Pittmen of Groove Tubes made the Trio Preamp that J supposidly uses. It looks like it has two different powersupplys: one for a Fender sound and one for a Marshall sound.

It’s all a little too much for me. I just use a tape deck as a preamp. This hum is all part of the internal feedback that builds up. some where in there the hum turns into a scream!

If you want to learn something about electronics that is important to electric guitarists read about inductance. THAT’S YOUR HUM!

I have an issue of Spin magazine (1993 it think) where the cast of SNL got do every article. Tim Meadows said since he was going to be able to interview anyone he wanted his first choice was J and that he was a big fan. That was just too cool.

I’ll have this and TONS more articles and interviews up on the site soon.
