I think it`s ok to call Alanis, spindoctors, live alt.
Alanis was a commercial marketing ploy of "angry women rock" which riot grrls did a couple of years before, they took the ideas of underground female rockers and smoothed it out, made it more pop,but still tried to keep it so called angry.I have nothing good to say about that woman.
If you want to hear real angry women you can check out Ani Difranco,Sleater Kinney,Bikini Kill/Le Tigre, etc.
      Spindoctors-a joke
Live-never paid much attention to them.

Still can`t find a copy of "The Lonesome Crowded West",saw it last year around here though,it`ll pop up again someday. It problably is their best album from what I heard of it.
Have a Modest Mouse story to tell you I heard on the radio, they toured with Beck a few years ago,Isaac was mad at Beck about something and Beck was so pissed off at them he blacklisted them with his management agency to prevent them from playing gigs, but I think they have a pretty strong fan base that would prevent them from not being able to play, even Beck can`t stop people from digging them.

Actually I think Where You Been was the album that the critics think J sold out on.
I hate music critics!they always piss me off about what they think of a band or album.
I have a book called the Music hound guide, here`s their review of Dino Jr albums:
This is rated using bones(music hound, get it?)
          5 bones is the highest

          Dinosaur-2 bones
Your`re Living All Over Me-1 and half bones
          Bug-4 and half bones
          Green Mind-3 bones
          Where You Been-2 bones
Without A sound-2 and half bones
          Martin And Me-4 bones
Hand It Over-2 and half bones
          Fossils-3 bones
          Whatever`s Cool With Me-1 bone

Do you believe this critic?giving YLAOM 1 and half bones!,they also say J sounds like"second rate heavy metal riffing".

That`s why I hate music critics!people read this shit and it convinces them to not to check out a certain artist.

I think all of us here would like to get into the boxing ring with this guy,Jeremiah can take a shot at him first, then Allison,Jaron, etc.

He may like Bug and Martin And Me but that`s not good enough for me!

Thank you,Den Buck for your good taste in music!
I just bought a 7 song EP by Oh Susanna,it sounds great!Canada `s answer to Gillian Welch!
The music store here still does`nt have the new Gillian Welch album yet,so it was great to buy the next best thing!
Can`t find any Freakwater around here,I heard them on the radio and some mp3`s that amazon.com have.My main interest in Freakwater is Janet, she plays also in 11th Dream Day,I only found so far 1 album by them;"Lived To Tell" which is awesome!,they`re a cross between Neil Young,Television,X,Velvet Underground, and of course Dinosaur Jr.They recorded ‘Lived To Tell in a tobbacco barn on a farm in Kentucky!.
I also bought the Replacements-Tim as well,a classic.
Thanks again for the Oh Susanna suggestion,I was worried I may not like them,$15.99 canadian is a lot to risk on an artist you never heard but it worked!
They also had the "Sleepy Little Sailor" album as well,I`ll check out that another time.

No,Matt this is`nt the last time the Dixie Chicks get mentioned here!
              My sister likes them too!
Did you know that Natalie from the Chicks, her father is Lloyd Maines, who played with Uncle Tupelo,Wilco,Richard Buckner,Bad Livers, etc and other alt country bands, produced alot of bands as well.

I guess I should have mentioned what Uncle Tupelo album to check out-Anodyne is their best,it`s problably the easiest to find being on a major label, their other albums are on an indie label but still might be available.
Since you like Neil Young, you should like Tupelo/Son Volt/Wilco.
I was thinking about Neil and how his records make great road albums:
                Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
                Tonight`s The Night
                Rust Never Sleeps
                Ragged Glory

All those Neil albums are great road records.

J is into Sandy Denny?that`s cool.
Sandy Denny was in Fairport Convention back in the 60`s,and left after a few years and did some solo records;she had quite a good voice, she died back in the 70`s after a fall over stairs.A folk singer type, kind of a british Joni Mitchell.
Richard Thompson was also in Fairport Convention so it`s not that surprising that J likes Sandy Denny.
Cool to know what J likes, thanks for that Deepsludge.
Oh yeah-Wire-Pink Flag is great,Yo la Tengo covered one of their tunes a few years ago, very cool.

In a span of a few months in the spring and summer of 93 I listened to Where You Been,Green Mind, and Bug everyday.
I did`nt know too many other bands yet,but kept listening to the radio to discover more and understand the history of the music, over time I got into more and more bands and I just over did it!but Dinosaur was what started it all,Where You Been was the first indie/punk/alt I ever bought.

Jaron-before checking out Son Volt you should check out Uncle Tupelo, that was the band Son Volt and Wilco members were in before.
There`s a Son Volt video for"Drown" at launch.com so you may want to check that out.
