I`d pick"Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" or "California Sun".
I don`t want to talk about overated albums because I`ll just blab about the Pumpkins,NIN,etc. like we did before,so I`ll keep my mouth shut other than offending you Jaron or anyone else.
I`ll talk about the stuff you mentioned-
In Utero-I think it`s probably their best from what I heard from it,I never bought a Nirvana album in my life,I heard most of the songs from this though,is the production of Steve Albini you don`t like Jaron, his production from the early 90`s is`nt everyones favorite,he changed his production sound a little since then, like on the MOA albums;they call him ‘Battlestar Shellactica’ ;in reference of the band he plays in-Shellac.
Malkmus solo album-I`ve heard two songs from it,good but problably overrated, the drummer from Pavement has a new band that `s kinda cool called Marble Valley;I heard a song on the radio that was pretty good, one lyric is"A jedi knight and a rollar derby queen, they were twisting and shaking on the washing machine".Hey Jaron,we`re both thinking about the Ramones!those two posts are a minute from each other!
I`d change the Pixies "Where Is My Mind" to "Gigantic";"Where Is My Mind" is cool but "Gigantic" is better. You don`t have to listen to me though.
The remaining time you could add something punky, like the Ramones.I think debut albums rule alot of times because the artist gets freaked out too much to make the 2nd record, what to do with the music;try something new or stick to a formula, write songs in the vein of the 1st album or change a little, etc.
Not to get off topic but my theory is the first album you hear by an artist, not necessarily their first album is the one you like most. That seems to happen to me alot,it`s the one you hear first when you discover an artist, therefore your favorite.Epitonic.com is a great web site!one of my favs!everyone should check it out if you have`nt yet.
On a roadtrip a few years ago I listened to:
Teenage Fanclub-Grand Prix
Drop 19`s-Deleware
Zoom-Helium Octipede
St. Johnny-Speed Is Dreaming
Bettie Serveert-Lamprey
Uncle Tupelo-Still Feel Gone
Pavement-Crooked Rain Crooked RainJebus-I love Gillian Welch, bought"Hell Among The Yearlings" last Year,I hope to buy her new album soon;I heard when she went to college in Boston she was into Boston alternative bands,so I assume she likes J.
Nanci is polished I agree but like her tunes anyway.
Have you ever listened to Freakwater?Sounds good Matt.
Spaceboy-sounds like you bought some good stuff,I like Arab Strap too, still have`nt bought anything by them yet.Hayden is ok,did you know 2 guys that play with him play in a band here in Canada called Poledo, named after the song by Lou Barlow on You`re Living All Over Me.
If you did`nt like Sugar/Mould/Hart,that`s ok,like what you like if that`s your taste.I bought a album recently by Spain, the guy`s voice I don`t like too much, but I think after awhile I might like it more.Country music is`nt for everyone I guess,I don`t think it`s as bad as people seem to think.
I don`t follow that achey brakey stuff either but I guess I wonder where the line gets drawn between mainstream and alternative country;I like the alt country stuff but not convinced on the new country stuff.
Johnny Cash does`nt remind me of new country,I find him pretty cool, very open minded in the last few years to cover songs by Glenn Danzig,Soundgarden,Nick Cave, etc.
most people his age would not be singing tunes by those guys!
There`s this tune by the Bottlerockets and the opening lines are"She likes Dinosaur Jr.,she don`t know why,she says `if you like country music man you deserve to die"Country music is`nt for everyone I guess,I don`t think it`s as bad as people seem to think.

A few years ago Low played here,a band people seem to love or hate, they play very slow and sad, much in the vein of slow Neil Young Tunes or the Velvet Underground`s third album or Galaxie 500.The guy was telling me Low was playing and there was 10 or so people digging what Low was doing but a bunch of people was saying "Where`s the rock?,you don`t rock!" Low has to put up with this shit alot,I heard on the radio that they got food thrown at them, etc at other gigs, nowadays they seem to be getting more people liking them,Thom Yorke of Radiohead said recently he loves them, maybe this will get people to wake up and see that they`re a good band.Their most recent album"Things we lost in the fire" is one of my fav records of the year.
In my opinion we have enough bands who rock,we need more bands to try something different,Low started playing this music in the early 90`s when it was totally uncool, but over the years slow/sad core music has evolved to include a lot of bands doing this stuff.
If you want to check out Low,there`s 2 mp3`s at Tinytelephone.com you can take a listen to,and there`s a Yahoo.com archived concert,it`s 4 tunes,it`s a video concert so you can watch it as well.Allison-I`ll check out the Hard Stuff another time, thanks for telling me that it`s good,I read 2 reviews of it,one said it was average, the other said it was the best Kramer solo album,so I did`nt know what to believe so I thought I `d ask you.
The Rackateers sound good,Stewart Copeland is a great drummer, used to listen to the Police alot when I was younger, love how he plays the hi hat.Good choices RD;glad you mentioned Quasi,I always talk about Sleater Kinney and since Janet plays also in Quasi, cool you mentioned that.
Hum,glad you mentioned them,GBV-awesome too,Neutral Milk Hotel-great stuff,Holland 1945 is a great tune.Lots of other cool stuff you mentioned,hope Matt has these.
Indie is hard to define, with the amount of bands that signed to the majors I guess it`s more a sound than being on a indie label, now alot of bands are back to indie labels since the majors gave up on them. -
