Yo La Tengo`s album from last year was different from their other albums,I do recommend listening to it again though;here`s some of my picks to check out from these bands:
Yo La Tengo-Electro A Pura or I can hear the heart beating as one;there`s more variety in terms of fast and slow songs than last year`s album, check either of these out.
Husker Du-New Day Rising:if you can find it,if not try Candy Apple Grey,it`s a good one to check out.Sugar`s Copper Blue is a good one for 90`s Mould stuff.
Minutemen-Double Nickels On The Dime ne of the 80`s best indie albums;a good introduction to their music.Spaceboy-I think on your poll people here were wondering who Will Oldham is!I`m a Will fan like you so he got my vote.
Bob Mould was in a great 80`s punk/indie band called Husker Du,he did some solo albums also and had a band in the 90`s called Sugar.Allison and I often talk about him and fellow Husker Du bandmate Grant Hart.
Ira Kaplan-He`s in a band called Yo La Tengo, who sound like the Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth, sometimes slow and quiet, sometimes loud and rockin.
D. Boon-He was in a band called the Minutemen,Mike Watt was their bass player, this was back in the 80`s,Boon died in a car accident in 1985,that broke up the Minitemen and they reformed as Firehose with a new guitarist and singer,of course Watt now has been playing recently with J.Hey It worked!
Thanks For doing this Jeremiah!I put Moore/Renaldo and Shields/Butcher together because I did`nt like the idea of either of them seperate,so together they are!
Maybe I should have picked more than five, maybe I`ll do another sometime.
Hey Turnipfarmer:
Speaking of Slowdive, have you ever checked out Mojave 3?You problably know it`s made up of ex-Slowdive people;I don`t have their first album but their second album Out Of Tune is great,as well as their third Excuses for Travellers from last year. It`s different than Slowdive;more acoustic and Folk/country influenced but still has a ambient glow while using acoustic instruments.Neil Halstead has a voice pretty close to Nick Drake`s,Rachel`s voice is lovely as well.Out Of tune would be my pick to check out first.
Since Will oldham is in the songwriting poll I thought I`d mention some of his lyrics:
Palace Brothers-Meaulnes
"He came by the way of the half million murders,he came by the way of a long list of ironies,he came by the way of the road to Soiux City,he came by the way of the half breeds and lesbians."
"He knew it was in there but still was`nt happy he knew that it was less than the way that it should be,but undaunted unshaven an eagle(or ego) in britches,he set out again to unveil the earths riches."Palace Brothers-West Palm Beach
"The surf has swallowed him up he`s a memory now,the water is warmer than it has been in weeks, grandma lives just down the road she`s making supper for me tonight, she`s been nice to me since 73 when her son lost his lights, now his ghost is a host rising above the mighty blur, soon some maid would swoon and his soul would capture her,he`s still a fine kid with all that he did he`s a fan of mine."Palace Music-Weaker Soldier
"Once I was a weaker soldier hanging in the war,but I left like an ape, folded neatly in four."Palace Brothers-O how I enjoy the light
"O how I despise it,O how I enjoy the light, for the first morning forever, wisdom wealth tag on like afterbirth."Allison-heard about that cyberpunk album before, sounds good.
Eggwater-the Incredible String Band are cool, the album I have is "the hangman`s beautiful daughter",their lyrics are so absurdly funny-"Next week a monkey is coming to stay".
Turnipfarmer-Slowdive;have those first 2 you mentioned,"Just for a day"-which I did`nt like,except for a few songs;"Suvlaki"-like that one,`Alison` is one of my fav tunes(ever hear that one Allison?)there`s also that great cover of Lee Hazlewood`s`Some velvet morning`.
Walkabouts-can`t find their stuff here, they do some cool Townes Van Zandt covers which I heard at a Townes web site. It`s called the Hi How Are You virus.
Yeah I heard about this a few days ago,the cable company sent me an e mail warning me not to open it.
My top 3 is as same as yours Spaceboy!
Will
J
IaasicI`m not sure if you should have included J,maybe your fav songwriter besides J would have been better.
Anyway a good poll Spaceboy!ELJ-a very intellegent young man who needs to stop worrying what people think of him on a fan site.ELJ,a man who needs to stop worrying what the mods are doing;you contribute posts here,is`nt that enough contributions to this site?
Meat Puppets-"If you care about what people think of you,You`re a shithead."
No offense to you Jaron. But if I cared what people thought of me,I would have been dead a long time ago.I`ve seen more assholes in my life than a rectal surgeon.
This site is a clash of personalities, all message boards are,but this site is the best I`ve seen.
I love to see posts from all you folks,if Jaron overdoes it,it`s hard to know sometimes if what we post is worthy or not.
I`ve mentioned some jazz albums from the 50`s and 60`s that I dig,now i`m going to mention some from the 70`s,80`s,90`s;I`m not into this era as much as the older stuff but here`s some picks:
Miles Davis-A tribute To Jack Johnson
A rockin jazz album,2 long songs, the first one will blow you away.John Abercrombie-Timeless
debut album from 74,organ trio that`s great.Jack DeJohnette-Special Edition
1979 session with hip sax men David Murray and Arthur Blythe, one of the best jazz albums of the 70`s.Sonny Sharrock-Ask The Ages
If you see it,buy it!
1991 album with Coltrane Alumni,Sharrock was the missing link between Coltrane and Sonic Youth.Bill Frisell-Have A little Faith
Frisell covers Bob Dylan,Madonna,Sonny Rollins,Muddy Waters,Charles Ives,Aaron Copland,John Hiatt,John Philip Sousa,Stephen Foster,etc. amazing ecleticism.Paul Bley-Fragments
a very slow moving album, very atmospheric.Bley is a legend of the free jazz scene and innovator(he experimented with electronic keyboards before most musicians had them,Moog gave him them to use first!)July 31, 2001 at 11:33 am in reply to: TOP TEN FROM THE FREE JAZZ UNDERGROUND – by Thurston Moore #64263I forgot to mention there`s this great book about free jazz I read once called "As serious as your life" by Valerie Wilmer.Check it out if you see it around.
Here`s some more good jazz albums:
Ornette Coleman-The Shape of jazz to come
A classic,Ornette changed the sound of jazz forever.Albert Ayler-In Greenwich Village
not the easiest music to get into but try anyway.Cecil Taylor-Conquitstador
two long pieces,Cecil at his best. The piano would never be the same.John Coltrane-Om
1965 session that ranks as one of the most insane records ever made,Coltrane at his most noisy.Charles Mingus-Right Now:at the jazz workshop
1964 live recording, one wild trip!jazz at it`s most powerful;the music is like a rollarcoaster ride,it speeds up,slows down, you don`t know where he will take you next.If were going to talk about Ahmad`s how about Ahmad Jamal?
He`s one of my fav jazz pianists, check out "At Pershing" from 1958,a classic. -
