        Thanks for that article,Jeremiah.
I was listening to jazz for a short time in 1989 no one on the radio shows I was listening to was playing free jazz,I did`nt know what the books were talking about, until I tuned into the local college station on boxing day 89 when someone was playing Coltrane`s"Ascension",it blew me away, all the talk of friends telling me that jazz is elevator music or cheesy department store music and that it`s stupid music was blown away;listen to this man!you think jazz can`t be punk?
My friends were not into punk but they thought rock music is superior over jazz.
My theory is that these guys were the original inventors of punk;the fire, energy, and noise of free jazz is just as punk as the Pistols.
When I first heard Sonic Youth,it was "Silver Rocket";that feedback in the middle reminded me of free jazz, except they were using guitars instead of saxophones.

Thurston has great taste,we need rock musicians like Thurston,Iggy, and Rollins to tell people that jazz is`nt what you think it is,it can be as energetic as rock music just as much as it can be mellow.

            Inkling-
I bought Conquitstador 10 years ago.I have`nt seen it around much,I`ve seen Unit Structures around used before, that album is ok.
I`ve heard"Lonely Fire" from Big Fun before,Miles electric era is great,Big Fun is`nt as well received by critics as other stuff;Argharta is one of my favs from that era.

              Hey Spaceboy:

I listened to the first song Livonia`s love theme;sounds good!I had to download a free realplayer because I don`t have it;it worked on that song but when I tried the second song it started flashing the screen and blacked out.I then clicked on a another free realplayer download but it started flashing again, luckily I stopped it before it blacked out my screen.
Anyway I got to hear 1 song, thanks for mentioning it.
Coltrane has a lot of good music,I`ve heard about 20 of his albums.

A few years ago I found a interview with Plant and he said he had Big Black records;I find this hard to believe but maybe he does,he admitted to being a Albini fan for many years, and that`s why he chose him,he also like the production/engineer work on PJ Harvey`s Rid Of Me.
Albini also produced Bush,NIN,and a single for Cheap Trick.
He also produced his ex girlfriend`s album, the same woman I mentioned who used to do a show here at the local college station.

I agree with dimpfelmoser;Pavement peaked with Crooked Rain, when I bought that album I was pretty amazed by it,bought Slanted not long after. In 95 when they released Wowee Zowee I was disapointed, some songs were good but in comparison with the other 2 albums it`s was`nt very impressive;Brighten The Corners was better but still was`nt as good as Crooked Rain,Terror Twilight I never bothered buying.
I heard a couple of tunes from the Malkmus solo record,I thought they were good.Nothing is going to beat those first 2 Pavement albums.
One more thing about Pavement;I heard in 97 that Pavement won`t play a show for under 10 000 U.S. dollars.Seems alot of money for an indie band.

Monk`s life was interesting;he was very eccentric, there`s stories of him walking off the stage and dissappering for days.Quite a genius.
I don`t like too much in jazz from the past 25 years, except for some artists,Metheny is one, great artist. His 94 album Zero Tolorence For Silence had a quote on a sticker on the front by Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth.
I never listened too much to Morphine, heard some of their tunes on the radio, their sax player was cool.Sad to hear Mark Sandman died, loved how he played slide on bass.
Speaking of Coltrane with Monk,I assume your listening too that album from 1957;there`s a live recording Bluenote released years ago of them in 57,the sound is`nt too good but it`s worth hearing those guys who did`nt record too much together.
There`s a Monk live recording I heard once,it was recorded under the stage in the basement! They put microphones on the basement ceiling and taped it,Monk never knew it was being recorded.
If anyone wants to ask me jazz questions, just post it here.

For anyone who wants to know more about jazz:
I`m not going to ramble on,talking about the past 100 years of jazz;check out some books at the library for that, but I am going to mention some of my fav albums from the 1950`s and 60`s,my fav era of jazz.

                      Miles Davis-Kind Of Blue
                      totally essential,best jazz record ever.

                      John Coltrane-Giant Steps
the album that put Coltrane in the forefront of sax players.

                      Charles Mingus-Mingus Ah Um
An amazing album, one of his best.

                      Bill Evans-At The Village Vanguard
also available as 2 cd`s:Sunday at the village vanguard and Waltz for Debbie.
1961 live date that is legendary.bassist Lafaro died 10 days after in a car accident.

Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie-Bird and Diz
a 1950 session that I find as good as any of their other stuff, the band is killer too;Thelonious Monk on piano,Buddy Rich on drums.

                      Thelonious Monk-Monk`s Dream
His major label debut from 1962,a classic.

Eric Dolphy-At the Five Spot Vol 1
Dolphy was a amazing sax/bass clairinet/flute player, this live session with underated trumpeter Booker Little is great.

                      Cannonball Adderley-In San Fransisco
Cool live recording from 1959.very popular in it`s day.

                      Chet Baker-Chet
1958-59 sessions of ballads, slow and mellow stuff,Chet sounds great on this.

                      Wayne Shorter-Juju
a classic,Shorter showing that he was coming into his own as a musician and composer.

Allison-is "The Whole of The Law" an Only Ones song?Yo La Tengo covered it on their Painful album,it`s credited to Peter Parrett(sorry if I spelled that wrong),maybe it`s a Parrett solo tune.Never see anything by the Only Ones around here.
Was at the music store this morning,All the early Ramones albums are being reissued and remastered, saw the first 4 albums this morning,$24.99 each.they have alot of bonus stuff on it,Leave home has a 76 concert included on it.

                        Here`s some more lyrics:

                        Tom Waits-Hold on
"Go ahead and call the cops, you don`t meet nice girls in coffee shops"

"You build it up and wreck it down, and you burn your mansion to the ground."

                        Husker Du-Crystal
"Civilization falls in it`s grave, technology throws over the dirt."(used that one on a exam in high school)

                        -Private Plane
"Hope is a private plane"(used that in high school but changed hope to success)

                        Uncle Tupelo-Nothing
"Don`t call it nothing, this might be all you`ll ever have"

                        -Chickamauga
"Fight fire with only matches, for my respective trenches"

                        Neil Young-Thrasher
"They had the best selection, they were poisoned with protection."
                        -Piece Of Crap
"They cut the forest down to build a piece of crap."

                        Versus-Bright Light
"I`m sick from meloncholia,my fever is like the sun,I threw up 7 times a day, please make it go away."

Last year I bought a cd by the Loud Family;the titles are:
                          Sodium Laureth Sulfate
                          North San Bruno Dishonor Trip

                          I`m not really a spring
                          Rise of the chokehold princess
                          such little nonbelievers
the softest tip of her baby tongue
                          screwed over by stylish introverts
                          top dollar survivalist hardware
not expecting both contempo and classique
I no longer fear the headless
hot rox avec lying sweet talk
                          uncle lucky
                          just gone
asleep and awake on the man`s freeway
where they go back to school but get depressed
                          where they sell antique food
where the flood waters soak their belongings
where they walk over Sainte Therese

                          How`s that for strange titles?

His famous diss of the Pumpkins is from Pavement`s "range life"
"Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, nature kids I/they don`t have no function,I don`t understand what they mean and I really could give a fuck."

He later said in an interview that"I like some of their songs,it`s their ideology I can`t stand."

Steve Albinni called the Pumpkins"career empty opportunists".

Alice Coltrane`s solo records I have`nt seen around too much, she was a good pianist too, like on Coltrane`s live in Japan 4 cd set, bought that 10 years ago.
