Tom Waits on "swordfishtrombones" album from 83.
Thanks again,Jeremiah!
Thanks again,Spaceboy!
Gil Evans was great,he actually grew up in my home province in Canada, before he went to the states. The stuff he did with Miles is brilliant,as well as albums under his own name.
I have a late 50`s cheap compliation that has alot of jazz standards, very good stuff, best version of "Django" I ever heard. There`s also a late 70`s album called "Priestess" I like as well.
Trivia:Getz/Byrd`s Jazz Samba had percussion work from Bill Reicheinbach, who did he work with in the 80`s on trombone?Good choices dimpfelmoser, bossanova is really cool;I have that Getz/Byrd jazz samba album on vinyl, very good stuff.Getz usually got criticized for the brazilian influence, critics said it was commercial, hardly!Getz took his bebop schooling and mixed it with brazilian music, hardly commercial.
Other bossa stuff you should check out is Jobim(of course),Ellis Regina(great female singer),Bola Sete(guitarist),Luiz Bonfa(guitarist),Laurinda Almieda(guitarist, did an album in the 60`s with Sammy Davis Jr.!).
Check out some Cal Tjader, latin jazz vibraphonist, played with Dave Brubeck in the 50`s and cut a number of cool solo albums, lots of bongos and flutes and cool stuff like that. Some of his music is cheesy but alot of it is very cool.
Mongo Santamaria is really good as well.
I think I`ll mention a mix of stuff :
Shakti with John Mclaughlin-cool east indian raga stuff, with Ravi Shankar`s nephew on violin.very intense music.
Maleen Maloun Ghania(I problably spelled that wrong)and Pharoah Sanders-This album came out in the early 90`s,Ghania is a morroccan musician and Sanders is a American jazz musician known for his work with John Coltrane
I heard this on the radio, very cool stuff,I`m a Sanders fan so it`s very exciting to hear him with Morrocan musicians, sax with tribal chanting and drumming.
Tuvan overtone throat singing-way cool!Tuva is a country in the former USSR,I think it`s near Mongolia, throat singing is done in the these countries in this part of the world like Tibet as well. It`s something about singing OM! and holding it for over a minite until overtones start coming out,the Tuvans,Tibetans, and Mongolians are masters of this so I find it hard for me to do!I forgot to mention I was listening to jazz before I listened to any punk/indie rock, not the other way around. When I mentioned jazz in my posts I did`nt get negative reactions,so I thought everyone is cool with it.
Since you been back it`s been cool,Welcome back!things were getting dull here recently so I`m glad to hear your comments.
I first started listening to jazz when I was 15 and was totally crazed about it,it started getting dull after a few years and then I got into punk/indie rock,I was reluctant to listen to it because of the grunge thing at the time but went for it anyway, after a few years it got dull as well, just like the jazz thing.I guess when you listen to a type of music too long and become familar with it,it does get boring,so now I`m trying to be difersified enough to listen to more variety.During the jazz years I also listened to blues and avant garde classical stuff like Cage,Stockhausen,Boulez, etc. I also like Satie and Mahler.
There used to be a radio station from New York that used to play alot of early jazz stuff,Bix,Jelly Roll,Ellington, etc. I used to listen to that until they changed they`re format to easy listening! They played alot of obsure 20`s and 30`s entertainers stuff that was semi-jazz like Ruth Etting and Annette Hanshaw that was cool as well.Don`t know Status Quo?ever heard the song"Pictures Of Matchstick Men"?
There was`nt enough room in the profile list for other favs either,so people were limited of saying what they like.I don`t blame Jeremiah for this,it`s just the way the profiles were set up.
Another reason I did`nt mention jazz stuff was I did`nt know the reaction of other people to it,some rock fans hate jazz, and rock musicians too(Steve Albinni I heard does`nt like jazz)so I thought I should`nt mention it there but did in various posts.I guess some conformity was in that but I`m pretty much non-conformist,not some alt rock guy who wants to rock and that`s all.Even being non-conformist is considered trendy to some,it seems you can`t be anything! As J would say"I don`t know a thing to be"
It also seems trying to get people to listen to something different is hard, people always want to stick to what they know, you know when people say"I can`t listen to that band because I don`t know their songs"STUPID!how can you know the songs if you don`t listen to them!I`m fed up with alternative rock to and how bands seem to copy whatever is trendy,in the past 10 years we`ve seen bands copy Sonic Youth,MBV,Pavement,Stereolab…,why can`t anyone come up with anything original like the bands I`ve mentioned, but even those bands had their influences.
I don`t follow popular alt music, yesterday when you said Linolieum`s singer sounds like the Placebo guy I was like,Placebo? I hardly even know thier songs.I`d rather some obsure band doing something different than that pop crap,a pop song structure is good but it`s good to know there is some band out there trying something different though it seems maybe 2 out of 10 bands out there are doing something diffrent, everyone wants to be like their heroes."Kill Yr Idols" as SY used to say, play something different from your favs is my advice to bands.I`m all for a jazz or hip hop poll or whatever type of music. When people listed their other favs on their profile they had no idea it would be in a poll,so in alot of cases other kinds of music that they listen to did`nt get listed.I did`nt mention any of my fav jazz musicians on my profile,I`m sure others did`nt always list other kinds of music they like.
I don`t want to add work for Jeremiah to develop another poll like tommorrow or something, but sometime another poll would be interesting, this poll is where to start I think,if anyone finds it boring,ok;noone is asking them to participate,in the future maybe we`ll see a more interesting poll that more people can agree with. Thanks again Spaceboy!
good interview.I never read that Miles Davis book but I heard it`s quite good.Alot of swearing I heard,Miles was one of the 20th century greatest musicians, did`nt care what people thought of him, even if you did`nt like him as a person in music he was one of the coolest.
Today is a signifigant day in jazz, the anniversary of Billie Holliday`s death in 1959 and John Coltrane`s death in 1967.I just read the total guitar article, the other one I`ll read later.I like the "ear bleedin country" tag,I guess that`s why some of the alt country bands were very influenced by J,the 2nd Uncle Tupelo record was produced by Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie who worked with J before,I think they wanted a J type sound for that record.Jeff Tweedy also mentioned Bug as one of his fav albums.
Thanks Jeremiah! Thanks for the info on Linoleum,I wondered if they were still around, that Dissent album from 97,I used to listen to it alot.Did`nt know about the album from last year,if it`s boring I`ll take your word for it,I guess they got Swervedriver-itis,hopefully Swervedriver will put out a better record than that last one.
The Placebo comparison I don`t hear but I have`nt heard enough Placebo tunes too judge.I have`nt followed Placebo`s music except for that song on their first record`Come Home` I think it`s called. Here`s part 4 of "Fossil Fuel" by Mike Mettler
From Guitar Nov 94:"I chose that track because I thought I could sing it better than some of the other tracks available,"(he notes.)"Most of those Kiss lyrics are so not me-that rock and roll all nite, party every day thing. But they asked me to be on the album;I got the call from Gene(Simmons),And I saved the message."
(Back on the Sound front,Mascis surprised himself by utilizing a capo over the course of the entire record.)"That came about because one day I was playing the song`Seemed Like The Thing` and I was trying to figure out where my singing voice was going to fit in,"(he explains)"the last time I used one was on `Little Furry Things`(from You`re Living All Over Me.)Using the capo on the second fret to get a D-type sound helps my voice fit in better with the melody.I don`t like to have to transpose the weird riffs I`m playing on guitar to accommodate my singing,so the capo really helped me there. Then I just went crazy and used it on the entire album, though I really could`nt tell you why."
(When it comes to gear,Mascis will champion vintage equipment until(if you pardon the expression)the cows come home.(you see,he also displays a fondness for collecting cow-oriented memorbilia.)"I`m not obsessed with a guitar`s original condition, just that it`s old,"(he relates)"it inspires me to play more if I just look at something that`s vintage, you know?I`m not a big fan of new guitar stuff at all.I like to think of guitars as items…for example, take drums.Drums I really don`t care about. If they sound good, fine;I`ve never been interested in old drums. But guitars…it`s a lot more important that they feel better and sound better, that they`re lived in.I`m not just playing guitar as an instrument-I mean,I could never play an Ibanez and do the Steve Vai thing." -
