I once bought a Billy Joel tape, this was before
I got into punk/indie music. It seems punk/indie rockers don`t like to mention the music they were into in their past, but music sticks in your head for years so it`s kind of hard not to admit to liking a uncool artist, cool is just a opinion anyway of what it is or not.
You think I like to admit the first cd I bought was Genesis?I heard that Pat Smear of the Germs favorite band is Yes!

I was looking around Guitar world.com and found a Mike watt interview from 1997.

Here`s part 4 of "Smokin J" by James Rotondi
              From Guitar Player Oct 94:

"When I play electric guitar by myself,I only play solos,"(J notes.)"Acoustic is much more conductive to actually writing songs.I used a capo on nearly every song too.It was partly because I was sick, and I could sing a lot of the parts better and easier if I changed the key."(J used his capo on the second, third,or fifth frets.Earlier this year,J trotted out his `68
Martin D-28S,a Brazilian-rosewood-back-and-sides beauty with a wide neck, for a MTV Unplugged appearance with the croonmaster himself,Tony Bennett.)"That was pretty cool,"(grins Mascis)"I played `St. James Infirmary` with Tony Bennett`s trio, but they did`nt air it-I got cut out.I was totally bummed."(Mascis performed acoustic shows in small club settings as well, feeling)"more nervous than I `d been in a long time. It`s harder to fill up space without all this noise swirling around."
(But the fascination stuck. On new songs like "Outta Hand","Seemed like the thing",and "Mind Glow"(J used what he calls "an experimental `60`s Martin. It has a small body, but a wide neck similar to the D-28S.It`s the loudest acoustic I have."(The Phrygian-flavored solo lines on"Mind Glow" were picked out on the D-28S.)"I tried playing electric leads on it,but it just sounds weird,"(recalls J)"Acoustic is cool because you end up playing different kinds of leads;there`s not much sustain to rely on."(Mascis experimented with microphones to find an acoustic sound that had presence and body.)
"Every recorded acoustic I hear these days sounds like a fucking ovation,"(he sneers.)
"Sheeeng! No bottom end, just this zingy crap."

I have`nt updated this since June 15th so I thought I`d mention what I been listening to recently:
Gastr Del Sol-Crookt Crackt Or Fly:This is what they call post-rock,even though I don`t know where the rock fits in.Essentially it`s 2 acoustic guitarists with some electric guitar thrown in at some points, with enigmatic vocals and strange lyrics like"I guess I like the hot bread, can`t go wrong with the name"
Lucinda Williams-Essence:calling Lucinda Alt-country does`nt work because she`s older than most alt-country musicians who cut their musical teeth on punk, lucinda for the past 25 years has been in the roots music scene, mixing her love of acoustic blues, trad country and folk and rock to anyone who would listen, her 3rd record in 1988 was released by Rough Trade Records in England who are known for their punk catalog. This new album,Essence is slow and sad mostly with her raspy vocals(is she a smoker?)which are pretty amazing.
Pedro The Lion-Winners Never Quit:This is one guy from Seattle who kind of reminds me of the band Idaho or Bedhead, slow tunes mixed with some rockers, very cool stuff.
Godspeed You Black Emperor-Lift Yr Skinny Fists…:Astounding music from Montreal,Que,Canada this rock orchestra just rules;sometimes it sounds like Sonic Youth with some violins, trumpets, etc or a Canadian Spiritualized or Mogwai. If you like any of those bands check out Godspeed. It`s a double CD with 4 long tracks,my fav is the first track off disc 2 which is 23 minutes long, totally brilliant.
They have some other discs I have`nt got yet but this "Lift Yr Skinny Fists…" is the most recent.

No,you did`nt offend me with joking around, yesterday I was out most of the day and did`nt get a chance to say anything.
Oh,yeah that Yo La Tengo site called Sunsquashed.com that has `rocks off` by the stones,I downloaded it this morning, sounds good! but when I did downloaded some more tunes their server broke and cut the downloads off!at least I got to hear `rocks off`,it`s in my computer`s mp3`s now. When they fix that site check it out, that site goes on and off so it`s hard to download music from it,hopefully they`ll fix it soon, another great tune they cover on that site is Neil Young`s`Prisoners Of Rock And Roll`.

That book should be cool.I`m glad someone is telling the story of what happened between from punk`s early years to grunge, that story between 81-91 is`nt well told enough, and it`s an important chapter in this music.

Here`s part 3 of "smokin J" by James Rotondi
                        From Guitar Player Oct 94:

"When I started playing guitar, lead was all I was interested in,"(he recalls.)"Some people pick up the guitar and play chords, some people pick it up and play solos.I was never much for chords."(Though J claims ignorance of scale forms, his wild, mostly pentatonic lead style-later abetted by triple-teamed fuzz-boxes-got its start in high school, when he`d noodle along with Stones and Stooges records,
picking out breaks by Mick Taylor and Ron Asheton.)"I did`nt start playing for real until I got this band going."(J says of Dinosaur`s early days, when the lineup included future Sebadoh member Lou Barlow on bass. That was in the mid 80`s,after the dissolution of Deep Wound,A Pioneer Valley hardcore unit that featured Mascis behind the kit.)
"When I started the band,I was very influenced by Greg Sage, the guy from the Wipers,"(he explains.)"Most people have`nt heard of him,but he actually influenced Nirvana
and lots of people in the punk rock realm. His playing is amazing, and his songs are just great.I`ve definitely ripped off Greg Sage more than anyone else."(Dinosaur Jr.`s first three albums-Dinosaur(Homestead),You`re Living All Over Me,and Bug(both on SST) feature exquisite, ecstatic guitar noise amid a developing knack for hooks and hard rock-part of the transformation from Pere Ubu Jr to Purple Jr.)
(But it was`nt only Deep Purple that set the stage for J`s latest dour opus.He did`nt particularly enjoy last year`s Lollapalooza romp, and many of his sets seemed lackluster and jaded.Maybe it was tension with his record label, which failed to capitalize on his strong `93 release Where You Been,or maybe it was the untimely loss of his father, but J was chasing demons, and they doubled back, laying him up in his Manhattan pad with a serious case of pneumonia.)"I was sitting on the couch in my apartment for a couple of months, just being sick,"(he says)"I could`nt play too loud,so I wrote all the songs on acoustic."(It`s a telling difference, resulting in songs -some explosive, some soft and poignant-that work off cool chord changes as well as deadly riffs.)

I did a guilty pleasures bit, maybe 2 weeks ago,so check that out.The bee gees is just something I listened to as a kid,I don`t listen to them now;If you want to check out a cool bee gees cover,a band called Mule covered’to love somebody` on a b side to a single and man,it just kicks ass!Mule kind of sounds like a post-punk Lynryd Skynrd, really drunken redneck vocals, very cool!see if you can find that single someday,I don`t have it but heard it on the radio.
My discovery of punk came pretty late, when I first came to the city where I live now,I was in grade 8 and the other kinds in grade 9,some of them were into punk. There was this one guy
who walked in front of me when I went home from school who had a 7 seconds jacket,I had no clue who 7 seconds was,all I knew was pop music.
I remember a friend told me a guy played hima Husker Du tape,my friend said it was the worst music he ever heard!
A guy at the college station said he got into punk when someone threw a Black Flag tape at him!No one threw a Black Flag tape at me!
If I got into punk when I was 12 or 13 I think it would have changed my life totally, changed how I viewed things and the assholes at school that picked on me and the teachers that did`nt like me.I was in my late teens when I first heard punk on the radio and decided that it was something to get into.

Some thoughts on my earliest memories of music:
The first music any of us hear is our parents records;my Dad usually bought the records,my Mom would mention stuff that she liked but I don`t think she was a record collector.
                            Most of the stuff I remember was Gordon Lightfoot,Eagles,Beach Boys,Linda Ronstadt,Neil Young,John Denver,Neil Diamond,etc.
You know that 70`s compilation you see on TV?70`s radios was like that-`Afternoon delight` playing every 30 min.,Harry Chapin,Seals and Crofts,Lobo, etc.
I also remember playing a Dave Clark 5 record
that I don`t know what happen to it,it was beatles type stuff;I also got into alot of disco at age4 and 5:Village People,Bee Gees-Sat. night fever soundtrack.I never had a copy of "Frampton comes alive"for some reason and had knew nothing about punk rock, guess I was too young and that stuff would have scared a little kid anyway.I also remember having an abba record, that kind of pop appeals
                            to a kid.
Anyone out there like to mention what they listened to as a kid?

The music in commercials debate is something I`m split on.It is blasphemy to see a good song used to sell something yet some of these artists never made much money on them plus it exposes the tunes to people that would not have heard them.
Buffalo Tom`s Soda Jerk has been in at least 3 ads.Why that many I don`t know, but they`re like America`s most underated band so maybe to see a little attention is`nt too bad.
They used a Mingus tune in a car ad?Mingus would problably have smashed his TV!There`s a chandlier in a NYC jazz club that Mingus put his fist through! They call it the Mingus Light!
As I mentioned in the dream line-up Paul Stanley from Kiss is going to do a Folger`s coffee ad,this might be seen as cheesy as when Gene Simmons was on "who wants to be a millionaire"but maybe some one else may not think so.
I don`t know,I`m kind of undecided on the issue but there`s more songs than ever being used and I hope it does`nt get out of hand.

I posted that on jun19th so the bee gees reference that I mentioned today just came up unintential. That Sgt. pepper movie just sucks and is really strange as I mentioned.I problably could have come up with a better movie to mention.
There`s these two guys on the college station who both admitted they love old bee gees records.Very scary! One guy is a huge Stooges fan and the other guy loves Husker Du.
I don`t like the bg`s but check out that cover song I mentioned in the earliest music memory section.I`m going to look for an mp3 of it but I doubt there is one.
