The guy was playing a saw. I saw mainly J sitting just soloing. Suzanne Thorpe on flute (way too loud in the mix) Jimi Shields on bass and somebody playing something else. I thought lapsteel but maybe a saw I didn’t go up close. Met a forum member. It wasn’t tough to spot a J fan. They played like one long jam and it was cool but lacking drums like the last time I saw them. The other two bands Autolux and Secret Machines were cool. I felt like an old man there now being 28 but I met some other old school Dino fans.
Not sure. The last time I saw Murph was a few years ago playing with Don Fleming. That was not to far after the Hellride East Tour. He seemed like he could do it but my friend says he has been getting messed up lately. So they may need his replacement in Dinosaur Jr. and in Evan Dando’ band George. But George and Lou never played together I don’t think. Maybe jammed back in the day but then it isn’t a real reunion. But I kind of missed George on the last Fog tour even though Spence was great and I think at this point unless he is now to messed up would be better than Murph. But Murph deserves the right.

Probably only a few hours. Remember Watt learned the songs on a tape recorder before the tour. I wonder if Lou remembers most of the stuff, or how long it will take him to get it back. Drums are drums and I am sure Murph hasn’t forgotten too much.

214 E. 6th St.In order of appearance:
The Rosebuds 8pm
Lou Barlow 9pm
Radar Bros. 10 pm
M. Ward (w/ full band!) 11pm
Crooked Fingers 12am
Special Guest 1amHow do you know they are playing, and is this in Texas?
The only bass players i know to play the wagon are DOn Fleming, Mike Johnson, Mike Watt, Matt Hunter, Dave Schools, and I think a woman played it back in the day originally but never heard of lou doing it. They brook up in 88 and the wagon didn’t come out untill 90-91
Maybe it got too much More Light and is just faded.
hopefully this will be like the last time I saw them. ANd with a drummer. They were awesome.
February 7, 2005 at 11:23 am in reply to: DINOSAUR JR REUNION THIS SUMMER (??? – POSSIBLY…!) #107123My friend just saw on the velvet rope message board that in the latest Merge press release they are working on the reunion.
I definately don’t want to see J get pressured into something he doesn’t want to do and I doubt he will allow himself to, and musically he has moved beyond since 1989 but for the fans and I think partly for Lou and Murph because of the way things ended it would be great. Also since J and Lou are on the same label it would be good cross promotion. They should do like ten shows
NY
Amherst
Philly
Chicago
LA
San Fran
Hoboken
DC
Rhode Island
and a couple of others. It would be a couple of weeks out of their lives that would make thousands happy and help to sell the reissues. Because why put them out if you don’t care about selling them.I love MIke too but Lou Barlows bass is part of what defined Dinosaur Jr and made it what it is. There is no better or worse in music only personal opinions. And I think that Lou is definately a more prolific and diverse writer than Mike Johnson and I can’t really take Mike’s crash test dummy voice.
January 24, 2005 at 12:05 pm in reply to: DINOSAUR JR REUNION THIS SUMMER (??? – POSSIBLY…!) #107099It would be cool to see. I never saw the original linup only J, Murph and Mike so it would be cool. But its been a few years since Lou has rocked a bass all loud and what not. In one of the interviews here he says he can’t imagine playing a rickenbacher through a marshel and competting with J’s guitar anytime soon but it could happen. I think it would be great to coincide with the reissues but do you think Lou and Murph make any residuals off of those albums because if not why would they care if they sell at all. If they do I would like to hear:
The Lung
Leper
Severed Lips
Sludgefest
No Bones
Raisans
Does It Float
Cats in a bowl
Don’t
Repulsion
In A JAr
Little Fury Things
Freak Scene
The Post
Yeah We Know
Pond Song (not likely)
Forget the swan
Quest
Kracked
Tarpit
Just Like Heavan
THey Always Come
Budge
Keep The Glove
Let It Ride.
Show Me The Way
Bulbs of PassionI guess pretty much all of the songs except a couple from the fist three albums. 27 songs, thats about what the Pixies played and they wouldn’t play as many shows so they could do it. Unfortunately I would want to hear Get Me, or wagon or other post Lou stuff and they wouldn’t play that too but I guess I have seen that enough times this year already.
I don’t remember a purple hat that must have been cool.
I had the hat with the cow on it and lost it. I always wonder if someone somewhere is wearing it. I still have a Dinosaur Jr. crew hat and I am glad I just bought a new Alien Workshop shirt at the last fog show and the green mind shirt cause now tthey are all gone.
"And if you get a chance, inquire about the stinginess of the bonus tracks on these reissues, eh? One song? C’mon now. Perhaps bring along one of those massive two-disc Pavement reissues as helpful counterpoint."
Who are they saying if you get a chance, inquire to? As if the next time I see J I am going to say hey J why you being so stingy with the reissues. I think they are just that reissues. We have access to more live J stuff than he probably has himself. And I have heard 95% of everything he has recorded already. The only possibility is if their were some old songs that were recorded and not released but if any I think they would be from the Hand It Over era not 1984-1988.
I do wish he used the telecaster on songs like Get Me in particular but he did a fine job without it.
